From a Tier 3 college to getting an SDE job at Microsoft: An inspiring journey 🎯

I was inspired by the story of Swati Jha, which hasn't been easy but motivates a lot of people out there.

She studied at a Tier 3 college in India and worked at TCS after her B.Tech. Despite a lot of challenges, no guidance, and no proper roadmap and knowledge of resources, she was able to prepare. Swati kept her focus on her goal. Her goal was to switch to a product-based company, so she prepared consistently.

She refused to give up and with her determination, she finally got into one of her dream companies - Microsoft.

She has a lot to share that is worth sharing and inspires a lot of us, so I had the privilege to invite Swati to my podcast. I am looking forward to inviting more such inspirational guests to my podcast.

Why Rashmika as a brand face for BEWAKOOF®?

Rashmika is not just a unique face and actress, she’s a unique phenomenon.

In this episode of Bewakoof’s marketing room discussions, I want to share with you the reason(s) behind picking the National Crush of India - Rashmika for #AllEyesOnYou.

The problem statements in front of us:

● How do we establish ourselves as an aspirational fashion brand both in the Northern and the Southern territories?
● As a brand that started with serving millennials 11 years back, how do we also target GenZ, while keeping our millennial audience happy?

We wanted a face that is of a big star who could announce the ARRIVAL of the brand Bewakoof which falls at the intersection of fashion and expression. And who better than Rashmika to convey this strong yet complex brand message?

Considering her unique style quotient and expressive yet relatable face, we were convinced to start with but then, our audiences voted and validated our hypothesis with flying colours. 

36% of our TG chose Rashmika to be the face of Bewakoof!

So, friends, this is the story of how Bewakoof’s marketing team met their charming girl-next-door.

After all, looks do make the first impression, don’t they? 😇 

Interview Experience -> SDE 2 role at Microsoft 

Shared by a learner with almost 2.5 years of experience. ⭐

So he was contacted on LinkedIn by a recruiter, and the process included 5 rounds.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟬: 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝟵𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘀): 

In this round questions were asked from- Arrays, Trees. An easy round, and after clearing this round, he moved on to the virtual interviews.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟭: 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 (𝟲𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘀): 

This round revolved mainly around DSA, problem-solving and domain knowledge of the interviewee.

Questions asked were from:
→ A mini version of the "Word break Problem" where the interviewer gave him number strings instead of alphabet strings
→ Graphs and Dynamic Programming
→ Java Progam, my API knowledge, etc.

This round was challenging but he managed to clear it successfully.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟮: 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗜 (𝟲𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘀)

This round was also DSA, Problem-solving based. Questions were asked from:

→ Trees & Recursion
→ Standard Backtracking questions

This round was not as challenging as the previous round.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟯: 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗜𝗜 (𝟲𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘀)

This was a System Design Round, where he was asked to implement an LRU Cache. 

And then a lot of questions about his past projects. The round ended with follow-up questions, like how to optimize performance, databases, etc.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟰: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱

This round revolved around asking questions from System Design (LLD & HLD) and his previous experience.

🎯 Result: Strong Hire 🎉

His consistent preparation with a structured learning approach helped him greatly clear the interviews.

The questions he practiced during the live classes and with the mentors at Bosscoder Academy helped him a lot. 

While structured prep played a good role in his success, it was the mock interviews he learned from most.

As the internship season has almost arrived, here are some pointers that you can follow during your internship:

📍Before starting your internship: Understand the company culture, values, and explore about it’s products and services

📍First week of the internship: Set clear goals with your mentor and get familiar with the project and codebase

📍Second week: Plan out the features you need to add or the problems you need to solve

📍Third and fourth week: Start coding and testing your solutions

📍Last two weeks: Take reviews and feedbacks, work on improving your code, documentation, and presentation

Practice your demo at least three times before the final presentation.

And most importantly, continue preparing for job interviews and placements throughout the internship.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗶𝗽𝗿𝗼 ➡️ 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗻✨
Some may say that this is impossible since it sounds difficult.

However, the most important step to having a better career is facing your fear. 💪

Recently, I interacted with a Software Engineer who cracked her Amazon interview, while working full-time at Wipro.

And hats off to her Consistency, even after facing multiple rejections, her willingness to do more never stopped. 💪

Preparing for technical interviews at major tech giants seems like a big task for many of us & we often hesitate.

But it’s not as hard as it seems. It’s just the fear of getting rejected during interviews, that makes us take a step back.

Also, the vastness of DSA, the complexity of System Design, and more give us second thoughts.

However, if you truly dream of working for a top tech giant, only your Consistency helps you go a long way.

So, focus on these things, forget about the result, and just give your 100%:

Start small and cover the basics first of every topic. With your foundation strong, advanced topics would be less hard to deal with.

→ Make sure to dedicate at least 2-3 hours every day to your upskilling with your job. Remember your job is important but so are your Career aspirations.

→ Lastly, build your confidence by engaging in rigorous Mock interviews.

For this, your Networking helps a lot. So, make sure you make quality connections with like-minded people.

And even after doing all these things you still find it hard to upskill, I’d suggest seeking outside help from industry experts at Bosscoder Academy.
