Back in 2022 I was media buying for ecommerce brands.

This feels like a dream come true. At Commerce Roundtable, I had the chance to meet Gary Vee. He dropped a paid ad hack that will crush it in 2026 - here it is:

Ten years ago, I was a 15-year-old kid in France staying up way too late watching Gary Vee. DailyVee, his keynotes, every piece of content he dropped - I consumed it all.

Yesterday, I sat three rows back as he walked on stage at Commerce Roundtable in San Diego.

The room goes quiet. This is the guy whose content taught me everything about hustle, about betting on yourself, about working 18-hour days when you believe in something.

Then he starts talking about creative budgets and drops two bombs that will reshape the industry:

Bomb 1: Spend up to 50% of your media budget on creative production.

Most brands spend maybe 10-15%. Gary says creative is everything, and you're underfunding the most important part.

Bomb 2: Stop testing on paid media. Test organically first.

He breaks down the framework:

Old way: Create hundreds of ads → Test on paid media → Kill what doesn't work → Lose money on bad creative

I secured meetings with $100M+ ecom founders after months of ignored DMs. The secret wasn't better pitches. It was this:

Here's what I did:

Instead of asking for virtual meetings, I started mentioning I'm traveling internationally for in-person meetings.

Here's the exact message that gets 10x better results:

"Hey [Name], I'm in LA this week from France! I'd love to meet you. Are you around?"

People who ignored my LinkedIn messages for months suddenly respond within hours.

Why does this work so well?

Very few people fly from France for a random coffee meeting. The effort signals serious intent.

Virtual meetings have zero barriers. Anyone can hop on a Zoom call. There's no real commitment or investment.

But when someone travels internationally just to meet you? That's different.

This week in California, I'm meeting with people I've been trying to reach for months through emails, LinkedIn, and Twitter. They only said yes when I asked for coffee.

Remote work made it easy to reach anyone. But it also made everyone forgettable.

Showing up in person is the ultimate pattern interrupt.

I spent $20k on plane tickets to the Philippines. It was the best ROI I've ever seen.

I’d been feeling like something was off with my team.

After months of Slack messages and Zoom calls, we felt like strangers working toward unclear goals. My team had never met each other. 

When challenges came up, communication felt strained. People were less willing to go the extra mile because they didn't feel personally invested.

So we did something most remote companies avoid: We flew our entire team to the Philippines to meet and get to know each other deeply.

The transformation was immediate:

- Slack conversations became warmer
- People started collaborating differently
- The work quality improved

But the real test came during Black Friday 2024 - just weeks after our first in-person meetup.

Our entire design team stayed until 3 AM voluntarily, finishing creatives to make sure everything was perfect for our clients' biggest sales day.

They didn't do this because we asked them to. They did it because they finally felt like part of something bigger than their individual tasks.

Remote work is powerful for accessing global talent. But it fails without in-person relationship building.

Now we meet twice a year. Last trip, we rented one of the biggest villas in the Philippines and went whale shark diving.

When your team genuinely cares about each other and the mission, they'll move mountains when it matters most.

I deliberately cut my startup's revenue in half overnight. My team thought I'd lost my mind. <10 months later, our business doubled.

It was a trip to Saint-Émilion, August 2024.

My friends were partying until 5 AM, while I was leaving dinner at midnight to sleep for 4 hours and work until 4 PM.

I was the only copywriter at Statiq. Doing creative strategy. Managing clients. Designing ads.

By day 7, I was burned out, sleep-deprived, and angry.

But that horrible week saved my company.

I realized we had too many moving parts. We were trying to be a design agency AND a copywriting shop AND a creative strategy firm.

The pricing was too low to scale with quality people.

I was the bottleneck for everything.

So I made a brutal decision: Cut the copywriting service entirely.

We lost half our revenue overnight. Clients left. The team was scared.

But a little less than a year later, our business grew exponentially, reaching 7-figures in ARR with a way more scalable business model.

Sometimes the worst weeks force the best strategic decisions.

If you're burning out as a founder, your business model might be the problem, not your work ethic.

I just discovered the biggest productivity hack no one’s talking about. It helped me scale to 7-figures in ARR in <12 months. Here’s what it is:

July 25th, I’m sitting in a client dinner in Chicago, nursing my third glass of wine. The conversation is going well, but I realize I'm already forgetting details from the first hour.

The next morning, I had an 8 AM call with a potential enterprise client. My head felt foggy. I'm scrambling to remember what we discussed the night before.

That afternoon, I made a decision: No more alcohol for the next 60 days. Just to see what happens.

Week 1: Brutal. Every networking event felt awkward. How do you small talk without a drink in your hand?

Week 2: My stomach stopped hurting for the first time in months. I didn't realize how much chronic inflammation I was carrying.

Week 3: Sleep changed completely. Instead of passing out and waking up groggy, I was actually resting. 7 hours felt like 9.

Week 4: Client calls became sharper. I started remembering every detail of complex negotiations. No more post-meeting notes to figure out what I agreed to.

Month 2: The stress resistance kicked in. Situations that used to spike my anxiety now felt manageable. My baseline became calmer.

Two weeks ago, I had another client dinner. Same restaurant, same client. But this time I was drinking sparkling water and remembering every word.

The conversation went deeper than any we'd had before. No alcohol as a social crutch meant I had to be genuinely interested and present.

We closed the biggest deal in Statiq's history the next day.

I'd planned to build an entire company around this lifestyle shift. Had to shelve it because Static is scaling too fast to split focus.

But the experiment continues. Two months in, and the data is clear: When you're building something demanding, every edge matters.

This one surprised me more than any productivity hack I've tried.

Founders: do not start a company in SF. I just spent a week there and met dozens of entrepreneurs. Here's what I noticed:

Before the trip, my feed was full of warnings.

"Don't go to SF." "Tech is leaving." "The city is over."

I went anyway. Spent a week at Commerce Roundtable.

In 7 days, I connected with 8-figure brand owners I'd been cold emailing for months, with zero responses to my LinkedIn DMs.

I met three potential clients who will add significant revenue if they close. And I formed relationships with agency owners who now send referrals my way.

None of this happens on Zoom.

The density of decision-makers in SF alone is unmatched. 

- Breakfast with a $50M DTC founder.
- Lunch with someone raising their Series B.
- Dinner with operators who become your biggest advocates.

This week alone, I built relationships that will compound for years.

So why did I say don't start a company in SF?

Because it's not for wanna-be founders. It's intense. It's unforgiving.

It filters out founders who aren't serious. Who aren't willing to invest time, energy, and resources. Who think they can build something significant from their couch.

If you need convincing, don't come. But if you're a hustler who understands that showing up is half the battle? SF is exactly where you need to be.

We have 30+ on our team, and I've done 100s of interviews. The best people I’ve ever hired never ask me any questions.

I spend most of my time hiring. We review 2,000-3,000 portfolios monthly to hire 2 designers.

For months, I thought I was missing something. 

When asked if they have questions at the end of an interview, the candidates we reject ask questions like: 

"Where do you see the company in 5 years?" "What's the culture like?" "What does a typical day look like?"

The same generic questions every time. 

But the candidates who become our best people respond with: "No, everything's crystal clear."

I used to see that as a red flag. Now I see it as the signal.

You need extreme confidence to tell an interviewer you have no questions.

The people with no questions came prepared. They understood the business. They listened the entire interview and absorbed everything. 

That confidence matters more than a portfolio or a résumé. 

Don't optimize for people who interview well.
Optimize for people sure enough to be themselves.

If you're hiring: pay attention to what they don't ask.

Jordan Menard manages $300M in ad spend. He just told a room full of media buyers to INCREASE their CPAs at Commerce Roundtable. Here's why:

He drops this bomb: "Stop trying to lower your CPA. Start trying to spend as much as you can afford."

The room shifts. Every media buyer I know obsesses over reducing acquisition costs.

Jordan flips the script entirely:

Most brands: Have a $45 CPA → Optimize creative to get it to $35 → Scale cautiously

Jordan's approach: Have a $45 CPA → Figure out max affordable CPA → Scale to $65 CPA with massive spend

His logic: Meta gives you the CPA they think you can afford in your industry.

If you're spending $100K monthly at $45 CPA, you could probably spend $500K monthly at $65 CPA.

But you can probably only spend $30K monthly at $35 CPA.

The math is wild: Higher spend at higher CPA generates more total revenue than lower spend at lower CPA.

He gives examples of brands scaling on 0.3 ROAS on the front end. Sounds insane until you factor in lifetime value.

The secret: Optimize for 90-day payback, not first-purchase profitability.

Most customers make 2-3 additional purchases within 90 days. That's where the real profit lives.

Meta rewards scale with better reach and brand awareness. The platform wants to keep high-spend advertisers happy.

I'm sitting there thinking about our clients who cap their spend to maintain "profitable" CPAs. They're leaving millions on the table.

Sometimes the counterintuitive move is the breakthrough move.

Stop optimizing for perfect metrics. Start optimizing for maximum profitable scale.

Steve Schwarzman is worth $53B. I've read his book 12 times in the last 3 years. Here's what I learned from him about scaling companies:

People think I'm insane. "You've already read it. Move on."

But here's what happened when I stopped chasing new information:

I used to consume everything. Every podcast. Every framework. Every new guru with a "system."

I felt productive. I felt informed.

I was also spinning my wheels.

Then I read Schwarzman's book once. Then twice. Then I realized: I was still missing things.

By the fifth time, the lessons started rewiring how I think. By the twelfth? They became automatic.

"Work on something very hard with outsized results. It takes the same effort as working on something easy."

Schwarzman's father worked 24/7 running a local linen shop. Schwarzman worked 24/7 raising the first-ever billion-dollar fund.

Same input. Wildly different output.

That hit me like a truck.

I was working just as hard on small opportunities as I could be on massive ones. Same energy. Different ceiling.

Now I only pursue opportunities that can be 8-figure revenue plays minimum.

LinkedIn? Could land one enterprise deal that changes everything.
Random newsletter ad to 2,000 people? I don't even respond.

Your energy is finite. Place it where the upside is infinite.

I'll keep reading that book every quarter. Because every time I do, I catch something new that's worth millions.

Most people read once and move on. I read once and go deeper.

Depth beats breadth every single time.

Here's how to perform with static ads:

1. Run offers

Running offers doesn't mean neglecting your margins. You can actually increase them. BOGO, % OFF, Subscribe & Save. Be creative, optimize for contribution margins, and deploy an offer.

Offers are powerful because they let you educate at TOF with videos, then convert at BOF with statics. All our clients using this funnel are crushing it.

They don't hurt your brand. Customers love great deals, and you can still create high-quality offer statics.

2. Be creative

Evergreen statics largely aren't working because you're doing what everyone else does. You open Foreplay, pick a concept, then think how to apply it to your brand. You're thinking backwards.

Instead, start with your brand. Think of a creative concept that works for YOU. Most high-performing static ads follow this simple formula: highly creative scene + headline + offer.

You won't find highly creative concepts on Foreplay. You find them on Pinterest by playing with keywords.

3. Test new audiences

Statics are cheap to produce, get cheap clicks, and can scale decently. They're perfect for testing new audiences/angles.

Let's say you're a coffee substitute brand unsure which demo to target next. Try different angles: gut pain vs low energy, paired with specific demos: women 30+ health enthusiasts vs men 30+ workout enthusiasts.

Here's how it looks in Figma: 5 different ad concepts, each with 2 design variations targeting different demos. Pair copy with each variant to match your audience.
