I've gained my student advising experience by working in different community-based programs assisting struggling students with setting then reaching their goals. My motivation has always been: help students succeed. By using my resourcefulness, creativity and sense of humor to support the transition needs & learning differences of students, I've guided learners of varying abilities on managing obstacles to reach their higher education and/or "student to employee" transition goals. My transitions advising/counseling assistance includes: - Build rapport through active listening and determine students ongoing needs (i.e. prioritize positive coping strategies using GEMS - a self-assessment tool) - Work with students to determine realistic education/career options and develop workplace readiness skills using experiential learning components such as reflective observation and active experimentation - Create lessons based on social-emotional needs of students, then implement interactive workshops such as responsible decision-making, stress management, communication skills - Provide information regarding meeting requirements of programs/organizations policies & regulations - Network for referrals to provide additional support services then consult & collaborate to ensure students' program retention and utilization of outside services Some feedback from former students: "Want to keep working with you...The advice you give is helpful" = Sessions with recent masters level graduate "Tough but fair" = Multiple sudent evaluations as adjunct lecturer for a CUNY program "She stood up for us!" = High school students trying to enroll in alternative education program "Like the way she teaches.
