I wanted to build a tech company but didn’t know where to start. 

So, I took a job while experimenting with different ideas.

Whenever it got challenging, I jumped on the next shiny object.  

This led to switching jobs 4 times in 5 years and burying 10+ startup ideas.

People were picking on me, saying that my CV was a mess. 

Then I joined a unique startup run by successful entrepreneurs. 

My sales leader Patrick opened the doors of growth strategy for me.

I recognized one of the mistakes I made years ago:

Not having a solid strategy and not executing properly. 

After 2 years I left the startup to start my own company.

We onboarded 6000 users in 6 months, making $200'000 ARR with a product that wasn't even ready. 

But I believe in continuous learning. 

So, I'm still studying the strategies of the greatest SaaS entrepreneurs.  
 
🔔 I share how top SaaS companies win and the ups and downs of doing it myself.

It has been a while since my last post.

There is a good reason for it.

While I didn’t post on LinkedIn as planned (no excuses),

✅ we welcomed a new CMO
✅ we finalized our scalable product
✅ we launched in Germany and Austria

This sounds great, and it is.

But there are also challenges (of course).

I know from previous experience that selling in different countries isn't the same. 

What works here, doesn’t have to work there.

How will we overcome these challenges?

Simplicity.

Easier said than done, but we are being very specific and focused:

- One Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)
- One primary use case
- One main channel

You may ask: How can you restrict yourself like that and scale?

That’s a topic for another post.

Here is how to get “lucky”:

1. Spot “luck”

We knew that on 09.2023, the new data privacy regulation in Switzerland (nDSG) would come into force.

We knew also that many risk-averse SMEs struggle to comply.

So we created a simple solution to solve one pain, cover one use case, and target one ICP.

When you are informed in a specific field you can put yourself in a position to capitalize on opportunities.

2. Bet on a trend

Build a product that will get momentum once that trend hits.

Take for example Unique, who started with recording and summarizing conversation automatically.

The founders bet on Generative AI before it was a thing.

When the hype around ChatGPT started, the company was ready to capitalize on the trend.

Everything got better and went faster.

Product, traction, momentum.

It was “luck” through positioning and persistence.

Thinking big and being ambitious can lead to inaction.

For years, I felt the need to come up with some crazy technology.

People glorify insane, beautiful, pretty ideas.

It held me back from taking action.

Today I’m growing a simple SaaS in a boring crowded market.

Because I learned to love the game.

Being less ambitious made me take the first step.

Start with a tool, not a platform.
Follow needs, not buzzwords.
Be specific, not broad.

Once we win in the market, we earn the right to go bigger.

We decided to enter a crowded market.

Even though I thought entrepreneurship needed to be fancy.

So, I always tried to come up with some new crazy idea.

Seeing others already in the market was discouraging.

I was wrong.

Because a crowded market shows that:

- Customer pain points have been validated
- There is already a demand for solutions

But there are also downsides:

- Competition is tough
- Customers have specific expectations

To make it work, it's important to niche down.

At PrivacyBee, we focus on small enterprises, our main use case is the privacy policy and we focus mainly on paid ads.

Focus is our strategy.

An observation about goals.

I’ve heard things like:

- It's not just effort it's results.
- It's not just hours, it's outcomes.
- It's not just dedication, it's achievements.

I disagree.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m result-driven.

But we can only control inputs.

Outcome: Book a meeting
Input: Make 30 calls

Outcome: Sell deals faster
Input: Always book the next meeting

Outcome: Find a profitable growth channel
Input: 3 experiments per month

Yes: If we are consistent with the inputs, we should get the desired results.

I've never seen someone who eats right, goes to the gym every day, trains hard, and not be in good shape.

But still, the outcome is not in our hands.

Instead of dwelling on the outcome, this approach is action-oriented:

1. Define the desired outcome.
2. Figure out the inputs.
3. Put in the effort.
4. Learn & adapt.

You genuinely know if you executed the inputs the best you can.

If you do but don’t achieve the outcome.

It is what it is, move to the next goal.
