As a Recovery Coach, I facilitated groups and provided one-on-one peer support. I learned an abundance of information about working with individuals with mental illness, substance abuse disorder, and dual diagnosis. I learned about stigma. I learned what compassion fatigue is and how to prevent it. This company emphasized loving kindness, cultural diversity, and treating all members as human beings, not cases. We never used the term "case worker". After one year of direct service to our members, I was promoted into a position within the administrative team. This gave me insight into the history of behavioral health in general, and HOPE in particular. I took meeting minutes for a variety of weekly and bi-weekly meetings, and I coordinated the distribution of all mail, inter-departmental and external, on a daily basis. I supervise four staff, including the site's Administrative Assistant. I also coordinated donations and schedules for the three front desk staff. In addition, I trained and delegated tasks to the Administrative Assistant and ordered all office supplies, creating an inventory by which to organize future orders. Finally, I created a new Front Desk Policies and Procedures manual, introducing guides to the use of new software, new processes, new paperwork, new everything! I was proud of this completed project, which I hope is still a work-in-progress, seeing as the changes at HOPE have not yet ceased.
