Minimize desk rejection of your manuscripts

✅ Perfect match: Do the robustness of your results, the core theme, and the perspectives match with the aims & scope of the journal? If they do not, you are picking the wrong journal. There are so many other choices to pick from. Using journal finders could be a great start? want to know more about them. Check Comment #1

❌ Incomplete manuscript: Have you included all the necessary sections and details even if the journal follows a "free format" or "your paper your way" submission model? some journals also have submission checklists. Take that extra hour or so to ensure completeness. Did you know that @paperpal has a manuscript check feature that can do this check for you? Check Comment #2

✅ Free of language errors: No one likes a manuscript full of typos and grammatical errors. Though most journals do not reject manuscripts for a lack of language quality, you might still get your paper back with a request to revise and resubmit. That neither looks good nor helps you save time in the process. Want a list of tools that can help you check your manuscript for language errors. I have listed a handful in Comment #3

❌ Missing additional requirements: Does the journal require highlights, word count limits, layman summaries, graphical abstracts, all data in a repository, specific ethical statements, declaration forms, or any requirement additional to your general manuscript structure? not adding them amounts to an incomplete submission. ✅ No plagiarism or huge chunks of AI-generated content: The thumb rule is to keep plagiarism under 10 % though no author guidelines tell you that. The AI-generated content limit is even trickier. We do not even have such agreed-upon number floating around. So, keep it to the minium, declare any AI use beyond language checks, and include the appropriate AI declaration statement. Using AI tools for manuscript writing

❌ Outsourcing entire writing: Review articles, introductions, and literature review sections are much more complex than mere collation and organization of information. They are places to showcase your analytical and logical skills

❌ Images without cross-checking: AI is great for creating those colorful out-of-the-world images. Sometimes, that is what they are! far away from reality. A case in point is the ridiculous ai-generated rat images in a Taylor & Francis journal doing the rounds in academic circles. Article link in comment #1

❌ Not disclosing AI use: Most journals do not have a checklist of what AI use should be declared and not. The best stance is to err on the side of caution and declare everything above proofreading and language corrections. Find declaration guidelines from various publishers in Comment #2

✅ Collaborate with AI: Think of these tools like the super smart, fresh-out-of-college kids filled with enthusiasm and the eagerness to help and impress you (think pro bono and paid interns). The focus is on impressing and much less on perfection. You want to teach them, understand them, make them better over time but until then you will not trust key aspects of your work to them

✅ Farm out boring, repetitive, and redundant tasks: Want to check grammar, sentence structures, and consistency errors? these are based on rules that AI can work with. Want to do a critical data analysis that needs you to add new rules as you go along? then maybe AI is not a good choice to start with until you have figured out a way to fix the rules and communicate them lucidly to these AI tools

✅ Double-checking everything from an AI: AI learns from existing data, which could have errors and biases. Always verify facts, references, and claims independently. AI lacks true understanding of context. It generates text based on patterns in the training data; therefore, you know better than AI, even when you write with all your language flaws

PS: AI is great but not perfect. Until then, make sure to apply a human filter to AI-generated content, at least in scientific publishing

Write better manuscripts, grants, book chapters, and pretty much anything

💡 Start with a plan: Always have a road map made before you begin writing. Even better when you have a non-linear and versatile map like a bubble mind map, where the core idea and how things flow around the core idea are clear and open to revisions. Check Comment 1 for tools you can use to create mindmaps

💡 Be willing to pivot: The first idea is like your first child. You will never want to let it go. But remember, in writing, as much as in business and life, it is important to catch flaws, learn better ways, discover evolved ideas, and keep resetting your course. You will thank yourself for that courage later. I have a few #ai tools for you in Comment 2 to brainstorm ideas for #academicwriting

💡Communication is more than language: English is not your first language? Struggling to amp up your writing style? Great! but first focus on the content. Tell that compelling story in a beautifully woven narrative that leaves the reader wanting to know it all. Then you have wonderful AI tools to take care of the language. 💡Be your own scrupulous editor (or come find me): Cutting down on all the fluff and noise is never easy when it is your own writing. But remember, conciseness is eloquence. Shed that tear, pick that coffee, and wear that cape if needed but go ninja on every single sentence, the flow, paragraphs, and even the entire manuscript if necessary. 💡Be original even if boring: Writing comes with practice. Your first paper is going be meh! that does not mean you have to blatantly copy or pick a style and idea from someone else. ⁉⁉ I have that million-dollar idea and the right results but unable to create that zero/first draft? Cannot wrap my head around where and how to begin!

⁉⁉ I have robust scientific data and those showstopping display items. However, English is not my strong suit? My manuscript reads very informal and my “inspired” content and styles border on plagiarism

How do AI content detectors work?

1️⃣ What is an AI content detector?
✅ In the simplest terms, it is an AI that looks for content written by another AI. Want to check out a few? Find the 📍📍comment for a list with links

2️⃣ How do they do that?
✅ Based on some tell-tale signs of content generated by AI, such as predictability of the word sequences, variations in the sentence structures and lengths, tortured phrases, and the likes

3️⃣  Are they accurate?
✅ They are still new and in the works. There are instances where they goofed up badly, like when GPTZero and others detected parts of the US Constitution "likely to be written entirely by AI". Want to know why that could have happened? Linking an interesting article for you in the comments

4️⃣ Can I hack my way through it?
✅ Yes, simply by using AI tools loosely termed as "humanizers", to humanize your AI-generated text. These AI remove those "tell-tale signs" and make the text undetectable as AI-generated. Think patchwriting but on a deeper level.  I am adding a few with links in the comments for you

5️⃣ So can I use them in my next manuscript?
✅ I am not on the "Yes" side on this one. I still prefer that AI stays the assistant and not become the replacement, at least until I am breathing. But all those movies watched over the years say maybe there is a chance, even if slim, that it might not happen

5 FAQs on manuscript writing

1️⃣ Journal selection or finishing paper?
✅ I would start by creating a rough roadmap or mock abstract of the paper, choose a handful of journals, get acquainted with the author guidelines, and then structure my paper accordingly. Maybe even get the citations and references style in place from the word go if I had narrowed down to one target journal

2️⃣ What makes a good paper?
✅ A combination of at least five things. A very interesting research question, robust experimentation and appropriate presentation of results, concise and coherent language, picking the right time window, and choosing the right journal

3️⃣ How long does it take to publish?
✅ Depends! but most journals, especially those from publishers like Elsevier, tell you the average time frame for getting through each step along the way. If you time-bound, look for such journals so that you have a rough idea on when you can expect to be published if everything goes right

4️⃣ How many citations should I add?
✅ Depends on your specific field of research, the quantum of literature available, and the restrictions from the journal. In health sciences, around 50 is the average for original research articles; 15, for case reports; 120, for review articles. These are what I have observed and not numbers set in stone

5️⃣ What when my paper is rejected
✅ Read the mail carefully: is it rejected or just that there are several concerns? If the earlier, read the reasons for the rejection, work to make them right on the paper, and submit to another journal. If the latter, make sure to address every single concern from the editor and the reviewer/s, add a point-by-point response, revise the manuscript, include a good resubmission cover letter, and resubmit within the journal stipulated time frame
