I was the Head of Product Growth and employee #10 at Tonebase — a seed-stage consumer subscription startup for music education (aka Masterclass/Netflix for learning musical instruments) — where we grew from $400k to $1.2M ARR in 12 months.

The main mandate of the product team was to improve retention by understanding our customers, improving our core product experience, and communicating the value of our product to the end user as effectively as possible.

When I joined, product had primarily focused on building an excellent video streaming product. We evolved the product strategy and shipped many successful product features that helped drive retention, engagement, and activation: 

- Structured learning pathways (courses, progress tracking, curriculums, etc) 
- Personalization (recommendation algorithm fueled by explicit + passive signals)
- Community (subscriber-only live streams, interviews, learning challenges, etc)
- Learning tools (tools to help musicians practice beyond video content)

Buffer

Built and led a small but mighty 5-person product team – 2 engineers, 1 designer, 1 data scientist. We were responsible for increasing new user activation rates and net new MRR growth across all 3 of our products, driving a period of fast growth and expansion as the company scaled from from $5M to $22M ARR.

Buffer was acquiring 30-40k new users per week, but only ~25% were still using the product after day 3. Core product teams create net new value. Marketing brings traffic and signups. Our team’s mission was to connect new users to core product value as quickly and often as possible – and to increase the % of new users who became active and engaged with the product, and ultimately become long-term happy customers.

During my tenure we ran high-velocity product experiments which led to a 30% increase in activation rate, and 20% increase in conversion-to-paid rate. Our experiments also helped explore, inform, and build confidence in a number of major shifts in company-level direction - like Buffer’s transition to a multi-product company, from a freemium model to reverse-trial, and a fundamental shift in pricing strategy.

Product Manager, Growth

Joined Buffer to build their 2nd product, Respond (now Buffer Engage) — a customer support helpdesk for social media. We launch our V1 in 2 months, and grew to $500K ARR in the first 12 months.

Our team was part of an internal “Seed Program” at Buffer. We were internally “funded.” And tasked with building a 0 to 1 product that could become Buffer’s next line of business, and help expand beyond our core social media scheduling product.

We created a blazingly fast, simple, and easy-to-use helpdesk for customer support teams who were struggling to handle support volume on social channels like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, at a time when incumbents hadn’t yet realized the importance of social for customer support.

I drove the product vision, strategy, roadmap, and GTM motion that helped us get to Initial Traction. After a year of consistently growing MRR month-over-month, Respond was brought into the main company fold and became Buffer’s 2nd flagship product.

- Led product, marketing, design, and customer support teams at a $40M ARR consumer subscription business
- Supported Sugardoh’s expansion to every Ulta Beauty in the nation, while 2x'ing revenue and getting to breakeven
