Spencer Mahoney

I’m a husband, dad of two, ultramarathoner, and brand builder. I currently lead operations and marketing at Atomic Coffee Roasters and help grow Atomic Black, our coffee liqueur brand.

At Atomic Coffee Roasters, a family-run, second-generation business, I oversee everything from DTC growth and brand strategy to production and operations. We roast specialty-grade coffee at our Peabody facility and produce cold brew at our Danvers site. You’ll find our coffee in over 200 cafes and restaurants, 500 grocery stores across New England, and online at DrinkAtomic.com.

I’m also the co-founder of Atomic Black, where I focus on shaping the brand, driving creative strategy, and building awareness through content, partnerships, and storytelling.

What drives me is building thoughtful, scalable systems, telling stories that resonate, and connecting the puzzle pieces required to grow a business.

I’m passionate about:

- Running long distances and riding mountain bikes
- Spending time with my wife and two boys

A first look at our new cold brew cans!

This is a redesign of both our packaging and the cold brew itself.

I'll talk about our reformulations in an upcoming post.

But for now, I'm looking forward to seeing these start rolling off the canning line in the next week or two!

There are two kinds of coffee drinkers:

Type 1: Those that need coffee.

Type 2: Those that NEED coffee.

Which one are you?

Coffee beans don't expire.

But over time, they lose flavor and freshness.

These 5 factors contribute to coffee going stale:

1. Oxygen
2. Light
3. Moisture
4. Heat
5. Time

Ideally, store your coffee in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight, in an airtight container (preferably with a one-way valve that allows the coffee to degas but not let oxygen in).

And of course, buy fresh from a specialty roaster!

Talking with my 4-year-old son at Whole Foods:

Him: I LOVE hot chocolate.

Me: You know what I love?

Him: What?

Me: You! (as I give him a kiss)

Him: ...and coffee!

He knows me all too well 😂

Our GM of Operations is out for two weeks.

Here are a few things I took on this week that I don’t usually handle:

• Diagnose and fix an issue with our roaster.

• Diagnose and fix an issue with our new band sealer.

• Learn how to accept Whole Foods orders in a new portal.

• Set the daily roast schedule.

• Schedule a freight pickup and shipment.

• Quarterback a variety of wholesale customer requests, coordinating between operations and sales.

I won’t get as much done on my normal to-do list, but I love jumping into a different role in spurts. I always want hands-on experience, or at least baseline knowledge, in everything we do.

Weeks like this can be challenging, but they’re also a lot of fun!

Coffee shop red flags  🚩🚩

5 signs your coffee is about to be disappointing:

👉 The steaming milk sounds like a pig squealing
👉 They have a wall of syrup pumps
👉 Their grinder hopper is barely see-through
👉 The steam wand is caked in dry milk
👉 They spell "espresso" with an "x", or "Colombia" with a "u" on the menu

Calling all Q Graders of New England!

Atomic is hosting the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) course at our Peabody roastery on December 4–5.

What it is 👉 A hands-on deep dive into scoring and cupping with the SCA’s new CVA form.

Who it’s for 👉 Anyone curious about the new form, especially current or lapsed Q Graders who need maintenance by December 31, 2025 (SCA “FastTrack” path).

Whatever you think of the update (the SCA’s shift to CVA and its takeover/evolution of the Q program has sparked plenty of debate), this class gets you current.
