I wasted 3 hours,

By blocking out 3 hours
to "improve the podcast"

At the end of those 3 hours not much was done. 
Ouch.
 
The problem was I gave myself a topic. 
Not instructions.
 
"Improve podcast" isn't a task. 
It's a category.
Not helping my brain do the work. 
 
So I fixed it immediately. 
Next podcast block on my calendar?

Instead of "improve podcast" 
I wrote: "Improve the intro stories with more emotion, depth to get people to want to listen to the episodes.”
 
Guess what happened?
8 episodes of incredible stories have been created.
 
This is the difference between specific instructions vs. vague goals.
 
Right now,
Stop.
Check your upcoming schedule.
 
Have you been vague or did you write specific actions you're going to take?
 
Tell yourself exactly what to do.
When the time comes, 
you'll have much easier time doing the task.

If you see me on Sunday morning deep in focused work, 
it's strategic. 
I set the pace for my week before the week sets it for me.

If you see me skipping down the street like a kid, 
I hope you’ll join me. 
Joy doesn't have an age limit.

If you see me asking a weird question, 
I'm going somewhere with it. 
I’m just helping your brain see the connection.

If you see me mid-run solving three problems at once, 
know that movement unlocks thinking. 
Sitting still isn't always productive.

If you see me making a quick decision, 
trust that speed doesn't mean careless. 
I went through the whole process, 
just faster than you saw.

If you see me scribbling on a napkin, 
that's my brain trying to behave in public. 

If you see me turning down an opportunity, 
it wasn't easy. 
But saying no to good things makes room for great things.

I just found gold in what you said.

When I was 11 years old,

I was told I needed to 
improve my thinking skill of categorization.
 
But I was convinced I was good at it.
(fixed mindset 🚩)
 
So even tho I got sessions for it.
NOTHING changed.
 
About a year later, 
I got sessions to help me with categorizations again
And AGAIN nothing changed
 
About a year later,
I got sessions to help me with categorizations again 
(yup, a 3rd time)
And AGAIN nothing changed.
 

It took getting trained on how to help others 
improve their categorizations
for me to move from that fixed mindset to a growth mindset
and I was able to improve my categorizations.
 
During that training,
I saved 23 hours that week just from categorizing my tasks differently.
 
Imagine what my life would have looked like
if I improved categorizations the first time around 🤯

7 Things Nobody Tells You About Your ADHD Brain:

(being brutally honest)
 
1) Sitting still while thinking isn't a requirement. 
Your brain might actually work better while you’re moving.

2) Starting isn't hard because you're lazy. 
It's hard because your brain already knows there's a difficult part coming later and it's trying to protect you from it.

3) Overwhelm doesn't mean you can't do it. 
It just means your brain doesn't see the path yet.

4) Systems don't fail because they're weak.
They fail because they don't match how you actually think. 

5) Consistency is just making it easier to do the task than to avoid it. 
That's it. That's the secret.

6) You don't need someone to hold you accountable. 
You need the skills to trust your own follow-through.

7) Most ADHD struggles aren't permanent traits. 
They’re simply some thinking skills your brain hasn’t learned yet.

You set up systems that do the heavy lifting for you
not create so many reminders you need reminders for your reminders.

You talk to yourself like a friend who believes in you
not someone who hates you.

You schedule deep work when your brain actually works
not between calls and Slack messages.

You say no to good opportunities to protect the great ones, 
not say yes out of guilt, then resent everyone including yourself.

You ask 'What's missing?'
instead of 'Why am I like this?

You leverage your strong thinking skills 
not beat yourself up for your weak ones.

You challenge your brain to grow stronger
not accept 'that's just how I am' as a life sentence.

3 Ways to get started on a task 
when there's a lot of information:
 
(You do not need to use all)
 
1) Just take the first baby step.
Put laundry away.
Open the document.
Find the phone number.
 
2) Figure out what is the one action that will have a ripple effect on the rest of the tasks.
It's the big domino. 
Doing that one first reduces (or eliminates) the need to do other actions.
 
3) Look at the parts of the task and then zoom out.
Which of these parts can go together?
Batch similar parts together to make the whole process easier.


P.S. How do you get started when there’s a lot of information?

I don't care if you have an ADHD diagnosis.
 
I care about whether you have strong thinking skills or not.
 
Can you break down complex problems?
Can you focus when it matters?
Can you plan ahead and execute? 
Can you communicate clearly?
 
Instead of "I can't focus because I have ADHD"
Try "How can I strengthen my ability to focus?"
 
Instead of "It's too complicated so I avoid decisions" 
Try "How can I build my decision-making process?"
 
Your brain is trainable. 
Regardless of what it says on your medical chart.

Want to sound like the 
smartest person in the room?

Stop rambling.
 
My client, Sarah, was in a mastermind meeting. 
They’re going around the room,
everyone sharing their insights. 
Person after person just... talking. 
Or more like rambling.
 
Then Sarah spoke.
One clear sentence.
Straight to the point.
 
The room went quiet.

"That was really profound. Can you repeat what you just said?"

7 Things I'd tell my younger self:

1) Sometimes you save time by procrastinating. 
Not everything needs to happen NOW.

2) Track inputs, not outputs. 
You’ll achieve your goals faster.

3) Do not accept yourself for who you are. 
Most people will disagree, but that’s just noise.

4) You don’t need to pull people up. 
Find the ones already climbing. 
(And you don’t have to feel guilty about it.)

5) Stop asking "Why can't I do this?" 
and start asking "What skill makes this easier?" 

6) After you listen to your intuition, 
take the time to put into words what you’re feeling. 
It will be easier to communicate your decision.

7) Look for the small wins along the way. 
They’ll give the motivation you need for the hard days.

Fear is not a root cause of procrastination.

I have a question
WHERE is the fear coming from?!?
 
If you're trying to get to a root cause and the answer you get is fear,
You have not gone deep enough.
 
You're not procrastinating on a task because you've got a fear of failure or success.
 
The reason you're not picking up the phone to call the prospect is not because you're afraid of what they'll answer.
 
And the reason you haven't started working on your speech is not because you have this fear it will not being good enough.
 
 
The fear is an emotional response to a weak thinking skill.
 
So next time you find yourself trying to get over fear, 
take a moment to figure out which thinking skill it's coming from.

The root cause of procrastination is not fear

He’s fast.
 
He picks up 80% of the info immediately.
Quick learner.
And get right into it. 
 
But here’s the problem:
My client constantly missed the last 20%.
And that 20%?
 
It’s the part that trips him up.
So instead of flying forward,
he has to slam on the brakes,
step back,
and redo the work.
 
Slows him down.
Kills momentum.
 
But when he pauses earlier…
to catch that missing 20%…
everything else flows more easily.

 
Sometimes the “slow down” is actually the shortcut.

I take a moment to figure out 
what I did that worked.

And give it a name.

That name can be anything.
And when I say anything, 
I mean anything.

I had a client who named a strategy "mess-up."
Simply because it reminded him 
of a major mistake that cost him 
a couple of thousand dollars.

Now he'll never forget it.

It doesn't matter what you call it.
As long as you remember it.

Pro Tip: Keep a note on your phone with all your strategies.
When you're stuck? 
Pull it up and find the strategy that fits.

Your brain is wired for survival. 

It doesn't want to work hard.

So it will find all the reasons 
why you shouldn't do the hard task. 
 
But,
If we can make our brain LIKE hard tasks, 
It becomes so much easier to do the hard task. 
 
Here are 3 ways I get myself to hard things:
 
1) When a task is hard, 
instead of running away from it, 
I run towards it. 
I tell my brain this is an adventure 
that we're gonna figure out together. 
 

2) I imagine what the moment 
will look like after the task is over. 
 think about lying in bed at the end of the day, 
how I'm going over everything that happened. 
Which choice would I be happier with? 

 
3) After a hard task is over, 
I take a moment to reflect on how I did 
AND what were the results of doing it 
even tho I didn't want to. 
Now my brain starts stacking proof 
that the price is doing hard things is worth it.
