Time to share an amusing networking gaffe…

Last night, I went to a “Leadership in Aviotion” talk organized by the Chambre de Commerce de l'Ouest-de-l'Île de Mtl/West Island of Montreal Chamber of Commerce. Actually, truth be told, they had two events I attended yesterday and both were great.

As someone who works in leadership development, I try to attend events like this even though networking doesn't come naturally to me.

Before the talk in the evening, I’m walking around the room networking and I see a woman and a man talking together. So I go join in.

I introduce myself and usually, people will tell you their name back. The woman did but the man didn’t.

So being in my head, in networking mode (which can be a big effort for me), I ask the man his name: “Robert Piché” he says… as in “Commandant Robert Piché, one of the speakers tonight.” (He didn’t say the last part out loud).

For context, this man is an aviation celebrity. He landed an Airbus plane, in 2001, he made a miraculous plane landing saving over 300 people on board. 

I knew the story, I saw various TV shows and documentaries about him (my spouse being a big time aviation buff).

In that moment though, I was in my head, doing my best to be social at a networking event. I was embarrassed and apologized profusely for my gaffe.

He was a real gentleman about it and after the presentation, we had another chat and had a good laugh about it.

Well, I guess the great thing is… The next time we meet, we’ll definitely have an ice breaker to start with.

We’ve all had one of those situations at work
Where a colleague loses it and shocks us in the moment.

A client of mine shared one of those with me recently. As they were telling me what happened, I could hear the frustration in their voice…

“Steffan, my gut reaction was WTF!”
(they used the acronym too not the actual words)

“You know,” I answered, “WTF is a normal reaction in that situation. Did you express that to your colleague?”

Their look kind of gave me a WTF... ;) 

“Yes, did you ask your colleague: Where’s That From?”

That’s my coaching humor in high gear! :)

In those situations, it’s easy to get mad and have the situation escalate out of control.

When you show up with curiosity and ask  “Where’s that coming from right now? We were having a conversation and then it changed all of a sudden. What happened?”

It interrupts the pattern that just kicked in and it allows the other person to course correct as well.

What new possibilities could open up for you if you started asking “Where’s that coming from?” when situations heat up at home or at work?
