Hi, I’m Steph, a Social Media Specialist. What does that mean? And how did I get here? (Coffee... lots of coffee!) Here’s my story: I’ve always had a passion for writing, especially non-fiction. I love real stories, with real people and I wanted to help tell those stories. So I went to Mohawk College to study journalism. Along the way, I took any unpaid writing gig I could get to add to my resume and my portfolio! I became a regular top contributor at lifestyle magazine- Urbanette, gaining real-life experience interviewing designers, authors and even Hugh Hefner’s niece! The day I completed college, I walked into my local newspaper and applied for a job. Armed with the kind of confidence you only have when you’re young and naive, I remember it well. I handed my resume to the lady at the front desk and an older man came out to ask her something. His coffee was black and he had a pencil behind his ear, surely he was the editor so I said hi and asked him what he thought of the new mayoral candidate (it was election time). This piqued his interested and we quickly segued into an impromptu interview. I felt awfully unprepared but I managed to get it together enough to realize that THIS IS MY CHANCE! I explained that I had been writing online for the last year and my articles were being featured in major online publications! After chatting about the position for a few more minutes he shook my hand and said he would be in touch. I waited by the landline for the next week, answering every call with a hopeful hello, only to hear my mother’s voice (sorry mom). But then, it finally came. I was the local news reporter for 8 years, before print media took a hit and the paper died. I went on to write for what was our competitor, before having a baby and re-evaluating my entire career path. While I am a former journalist, my heart lies in more creative but still non-fiction writing, which led me to social media. I have a passion for research and storytelling so I went back to school to study social media marketing at George Brown College. Since then, I've grown a personal branding initiative in the B2B industry (from the ground up) with views in the 100,000s, before taking on my current role in the creator community!
