In 2014, I was the hub of my agency's operation. I had good people doing good work, but they were the spokes. A medical crisis forced me to change that — and it was the best thing that ever happened to our agency. I led a staff meeting from an ICU bed in early 2015, where I empowered our team not just with titles but with clearly defined responsibilities. What followed was the greatest period of growth our agency had ever seen. We created a growing company based on systems, processes, and empowered employees. In 2020, we sold our agency to a strategic acquirer on the other side of the country — in the midst of a pandemic, with none of the parties ever being in the same room.
