Full disclosure: this is an uncomfortable personal post about discomfort. 

Entering the private sector and starting an encore career after finishing a dream career in the W-2 world and bureacracy of public education is the hardest and best professional move I've ever made. 

I owe much to my coaches, mentors, trusted/loyal friends, and most of all, my amazing clients. I also am indebted to the supporters and cheerleaders who have my back. Incredible people!

Yet, at times this has been 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 uncomfortable (the business/entrepreneurial side, not the coaching).

So how do I know I made the right decision? 

𝗕𝗘𝗖𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗜𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗦 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘.

Every time I have intentionally departed a plateau and moved to higher ground, that move has been preceded by traversing the brutal switchbacks on the Trail of Discomfort and passage through the Valley of Despair (I'm a certified tour guide there if you need one!) which is littered with formidable obstacles, stumbling blocks and tantalizing, deceptive mirages. 

A nasty, unforgiving, and beautiful place!

𝑰'𝒎 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒀𝑶𝑼 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆.

Most patients on medical helicopters are unconscious or heavily sedated.
𝙄’𝙢 𝙬𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙠𝙚.

Below me, the Green and Colorado rivers merge. Two colors colliding. I can’t help but think about the current confluence in my own life.

Before liftoff, the whispered message was clear: “𝘠𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺.”
So…why am I here?

My eyes dart between the heart monitor and the sunset. 
The former is steady, the latter is disappearing quickly.
𝘚𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦.

I’m not seeing my life flash before my eyes, just the faces of my wife Steph, our four kids, and my grandson. They seem to hover just above the horizon.

Then I hear it. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘪𝘵. An unmistakable, piercing whisper that cuts through everything:

"You’re going to be OK… but 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚?"

I have my answer.
Thankfully.

This post is about an enlightening and frightening ride on a medical helicopter. The patient received a gift, a question while on the ride to a trauma center. The question was "What will you do with your remaining time?"

You’ve done seemingly everything to give your teen athlete or performer the best shot at success.

Early and late practices, the extra lessons, the best equipment. 
You’ve been all in. The proverbial 110%. 

From the outside, they look unstoppable.
Disciplined. Focused. Driven.

𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨’𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨.

Behind the trophies, highlight reels, and the glory posts, there’s a quiet burnout creeping in.

Not because they’ve lost their work ethic.
But because they’re not always sure why they’re pushing so hard…or, if it’s even for them.

We don’t peddle the grind (yourself into a pulp) culture or hand out cookie-cutter routines you can get from Google. 

We coach. 
We don't consult. 

We guide both parents and teens to ask better questions and uncover blind spots. We seek connection with the deeper WHY that makes all of the hard WORK matter.

𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨, 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙨.

It’s not about doing more, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.

Here’s a smart place to start:
Tonight, ask your teen, “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵/𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦?”

𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣. 

Refrain from pulling out your Parental Toolkit.  

Give them the stage.
Avoid interruption.
Exhibit calm.
Listen.

This post is about encouraging parents to listen to their teen athletes and performers. The picture is about a young teen girl who is talking to her mother and father about her performance. 

I will never forget the moment my wife uttered these words to me 14 years ago: 

"I have cancer." 

It was brutal. My wife and our family were the recipients of donations, support, and love that helped sustain us in so many ways. We were blown away at the love shared by friends and even complete strangers.

It was a peanut butter and chocolate moment for me. 

Reese's lovers know what I'm talking about! Iconic combination!

“𝙄 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩.”

7 words from my ever evolving Purpose Statement that took MONTHS to discover. 2 contraries that finally landed on or in each other! Allow me to explain. 

If you’re raising teen athletes and performers, you know their calendars can rival yours. Ever feel like you're always a little behind?! I know that feeling. I lived in it for over 3 decades. 1,000's of students, 100's of athletes, and 4 teens of my own. 

That’s why this simple, seemingly contradictory phrase (“I will peacefully dominate the present moment") packs a punch for me. 

The two unlikely teammates: 

🕊️ Peace (calm) 
🎛️ Domination (complete, direct control) 

I wanted to "dominate the present moment," but it always sounded and felt overbearing and a quite frankly, a bit frantic. I could never fully buy in but yet there it was in my Purpose Statement. I was close...  

"Isn't this the opposite of what I want?" 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 "𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘗𝘉 𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳." After more journaling, the two contraries became teammates and the breakthrough happened. Wow, did it taste good (and still does)!!

𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 "𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩":

1) Your performance elevates because you're fully engaged with what’s in front of you. 𝘈𝘩...𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭.

2) Your joy expands and stress lessens because you're not racing the clock — you're owning the moment. 𝘖𝘩 𝘺𝘦𝘴, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭! 

It’s a paradox worth living.

𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 can build a dam. Bam!
𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 can build one too. Dam!

Regrettably, I've built both of these dams at times in my own life. In coaching, teaching, parenting, and even triathlon (the dam swim! 🤣). 

Different materials. Same outcome: 
1) progress blocked 
2) transformation prevented 

I see this often in coaching especially when conversing with potential clients.

Some people don’t ask for help because they don’t realize what they’re missing (ignorance). Others don’t or won't ask because they believe they don't or shouldn’t need help (arrogance).

Both behaviors hold back growth, opportunity, and momentum.
Very damming. 

Dam Nation!

Asking for help isn’t weakness. It's liberating and empowering.

Is your pride holding you back from becoming a truly Most Valuable ____________?

𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘥𝘮𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴. It feels safer to ignore, to mask with competence, or to justify as “confidence.” Yes?

But here’s the truth: Pride might be the single greatest barrier between you and becoming the most valuable version of yourself. A Most Valuable Parent, Leader, or Friend.

I learned this the hard way early in my coaching career. Winning a lot of games, the praise poured in. I listened too long. I started to inhale. 𝗜𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝙇𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙗𝙪𝙡𝙗 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩!

Pride was making me complacent. Satisfaction was slowly replacing my sharp hunger and a big, fat blind spot blocked my curiosity, making it almost disappear.

That was a wake-up call: 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴, 𝘪𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨. 

Those "high on their own supply" don't want or like to hear this: 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙮 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩—𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙥𝙞𝙣 𝙞𝙩!

So here’s a question worth asking yourself today:

𝙄𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙈𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙛?

Because until you face it, everything else—your skills, your experience, and your ambition, as freaking amazing as those are (and they are!), will always fall short.

They "can" make a lot, but your viewpoint is skewed (let me explain)...

I heard it when I was playing ~ "I can't believe you get paid to play a game"
I hear it now ~ "Pro athletes are overpaid"

Look at these top earners from some of the major sports leagues:

*Jon Rahm Golf $100,000,000
*Canelo Álvarez Boxing $73,000,000
*Max Verstappen Formula 1 $72,000,000
*Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander NBA $71,250,000
*Shohei Ohtani Baseball MLB $70,000,000
*Dak Prescott NFL $60,000,000

Yet consider these numbers:

~ 1 in 610 high school baseball players get drafted.
~ 1 in 3,960 of high school football players get drafted.
~ 1 in 10,399 high school basketball players get drafted.

Now consider that most pro athletes: 

~ Don't make millions
~ Last less than 3 years 
~ Will never grace the cover of ESPN 

So those players you see earning 9 figures (you know the ones people say make too much)

They are the outliers of the outliers. 

And guess what, the outlier of the outliers in every industry gets compensated for it. 

So just remember, for the athletes earning millions a year to "play a sport" are simply odds beaters (and compensated for it).

What happens when goals and values don’t line up?

A teen chases a scholarship 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘧 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴.
 
A parent pushes for a particular college admission 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘵𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦.

Neither side is wrong. But when goals and values don’t match, 𝒕𝙚𝒏𝙨𝒊𝙤𝒏 fills the family room, surrounds the dinner table, and weighs down the silence between conversations. Ugh.

The highest performers I coach don’t rely on willpower.
They build a fortress to protect their FOCUS.
They know defense wins championships. :)

Here are 5 ways you can play better FOCUS DEFENSE:

𝟭. 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Design for clarity, not chaos. Eliminate noise. 𝘋𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵.
𝟮. 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: Guard the golden hours. Early Birds and Night Owls 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦.
𝟯. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Don’t just switch—reset. 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨. 
𝟰. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Saying "No" is critical, front line defense. 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 “𝘺𝘦𝘴” 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦.
𝟱. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆: Scroll less, refuel more. Breaks aren’t escapes, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺’𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘦𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘴𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘵.
 
You’re already performing at a high level.
That didn’t happen by accident.

We love an 80+ yard touchdown pass! A long, perfect throw. A nearly instant score. The crowd goes wild (and the video goes viral!).

𝘉𝘶𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 80+ 𝘺𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘣𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘦. 

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟴𝟬 𝘆𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝙙𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚: 10–15 plays strung together. Not flawless, but executed with persistence, teamwork, and trust until the ball crosses the goal line. It's a journey. 

Habits and handoffs.
Methodical, high percentage passes. 

Multiple positive plays and progress including some exciting third down conversions. All mixed in with a sack, several incomplete passes, and who knows, maybe a nearly lost fumble. 

𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙝 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙙𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙨𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙞𝙩 𝙥𝙖𝙮𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙩! 

Coaching your teen athlete is much the same.
Ditto for directing a scoring drive in your business.
It's also true when elevating your own performance.

--𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 with your teens is less about one breakthrough moment and more about 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 over years.
--𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 can arrive in a single pitch or deal, but is usually the product of 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴.
--𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 can happen in a sudden leap but more often is a lengthy series of 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭, 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦, 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘴.

Go ahead. Chuck it deep once in a while from your own 20 yd. line! 
But the 12 play, 84 yard TD drive...oh baby, that is so satisfying! 

So moms, dads, CEO's, kitchen coordinators, and family room quarterbacks everywhere, as you check your play sheet, remember the boring, methodical scoring drives are gonna win you A LOT of games.
