After a successful stint as an editor, author, and speaker at Tax Analysts, in 2017 I returned to the practice of law, putting my professional expertise in pursuing tax litigation and tax controversies to work at Schiff Hardin LLP. Over the past 18 months I have succeeded in persuading the IRS to either drop or compromise proposed liabilities for income taxes and various penalties, saving our clients millions of dollars. I also represent clients, pro bono, in immigration matters. Clients rely on my advice, counsel, and experience, to present persuasive cases to the IRS and, if necessary, to the courts.

I was the editor of the internationally acclaimed weekly magazine, Tax Notes International, published by Tax Analysts. In that position I supervised a dedicated staff who wrote, edited, and produced top quality news and commentary for our subscribers. I wrote the weekly "From the Editor" note, highlighting important events and developments in international taxation, and blogged regularly for Tax Analysts and Forbes.com. I also recruited distinguished and up and coming authors from around the world to write commentary and analysis for Tax Notes International. Finally, I spoke on current developments in international taxation at conferences in England, Italy, Portugal, and Poland, and delivered lectures on international taxation to graduate students in Vienna, Austria.

U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division

Litigated large tax shelter, tax refund, bankruptcy, international tax compliance, and other commercial and tax-related cases. Recognized by judges for "masterful" cross-examination, and persuasive oral and written presentations. Successfully sued KPMG for information about abusive tax shelters. Successfully sued UBS, Switzerland's largest bank, for information about U.S. taxpayers with secret Swiss accounts. During 29+-year career, represented United States in cases involving nearly 150 reported decisions, including Pritired I LLC v. U.S., 815 F.Supp.2nd 693 (S.D. Iowa 2011); Stobie Creek Investments LLC v. U.S., 82 Fed.Cl. 636 (2008); affd, 608 F.3rd 1366 (Fed. Cir. 2010), Bell Atlantic Corp. v. U.S., 1998 WL 848122 (E.D. Pa. 1998), and Barrett v. U.S., 917 F.Supp. 493 (S.D. Tex. 1995). Over the course of my DOJ career, I helped save U.S. taxpayers more than $60 billion.

Fairfax County School Board

I represented more than 125,000 constituents in the communities of Reston, Herndon, and Vienna, Virginia for 16 years on the school board. There we oversaw the United States' 10th largest school system, with more than than 25,000 full-time employees and a $2.1 billion annual operating budget. During my tenure (in which I was elected four times), we set measurable goals for student achievement, monitored the performance of the school system, and worked with three outstanding school superintendents.

Virginia School Boards Association

During my 7 years on the VSBA Board of Directors I helped lead the membership organization for all of the school boards in Virginia. We developed and presented a robust training program for all school board members in the Commonwealth, and advocated for public schools and students in the Virginia General Assembly, the U.S. Congress, and before state and federal education departments. I also represented Virginia's school boards in national and regional meetings of the National School Boards Association (NSBA), helping to establish legislative priorities at the state and federal levels and to nominate the future leaders of VSBA and NSBA. Finally, I presented and advocated our positions in op-ed pieces, press conferences, press releases, and in panel discussions at federal, regional, and state education conferences.
