We learned it the hard way.

We send high volume of inmails every months.

And here’s what I have learned: 

1. LinkedIn tracks your behavioural fingerprint: 

- It doesn’t just read your message.

- It tracks how you act on the platform.

What triggered it? 

- Logging into 3+ accounts from same IP

- Copy-pasting messages

- Sudden spike in outbound

- Sending while not engaging with feed

What fixes it?

- Dedicated proxies for each profile

- Separate browser sessions (Gologin/ Ghost Browser)

- Warm up with likes, comments, voice notes

2. It flags structural patterns even without automation

What LinkedIn flags: 

Same format.
Same tone.
Same CTA.

What fixes it?

- Use spintax on LinkedIn DMs or paraphrase each DM

- Used post history, mutuals, and company context

- No links, no Calendly, no “quick question”

- Deliberate typos and lowercase text

So how did Clay blew up so fast? Was it only influencer marketing? 

I get at least 5 calls every month where founders say the same thing:

“We want a growth plan like Clay.”

Here’s the truth:

Clay didn’t blow up by luck. 

They had a GTM plan so solid that the whole lead gen industry couldn’t ignore them.

Let’s do a breakdown today:

1. They started in a community: 

People started talking about clay inside SYC- led by Jesse the biggest GTM community. All the top GTM/ sales/ founders hang out here. That’s where the first real conversations started.

2. Niche influencer marketing:

They didn’t try to win “everyone.” They went straight to lead gen influencers.

Clay offered them a credit-based plan (something that’s useful) and had them post workflows. Those posts went viral, and soon even micro-creators in the space started talking.

3. Indepth youtube guides:

🦾Eric Nowoslawski built insanely detailed tutorials for niche use cases. Those guides became the playbook everyone used to learn the product.

4. They picked one core audience:

Instead of trying to be for everyone, they went all-in on lead gen agencies. The type of users who could multiply value overnight.

Soon the agencies started introducing clay workflows in their plans and people like Patrick Spychalski even introduced clay agency concept. Which was a massive hit!

5. Clay owned LinkedIn’s feed:

It felt like every scroll had someone talking about Clay. That wasn’t random. It was a coordinated content push.

6. They used partnerships:

Being a third-party platform, they partnered with Smartlead , Instantly.ai, and more. 

Webinars, co-marketing, integrations all pointing back to Clay.

7. They sent millions of emails every month

While you think:

“Oh 20K+ cold emails are too much 😰”

Clay sent millions of cold + warm emails every month. Every influencer campaign was retargeted through inboxes.

And enterprises were targeted through cold emails!

But here’s the one thing most people miss:

Clay’s GTM only worked because the product solved a real painful problem that most of the tools in this space like apollo, zoominfo, salesforce didn’t. 

They focused on signals and enrichments in a way that actually got people results from their campaign… with unique workflows!
