This week's updates in eCommerce 🛍️ 

▪ Next is set to launch online and in-store in India as the retailer signs a new franchise agreement with local ecommerce giant Myntra. Myntra will be responsible for opening between eight and 10 Next-branded shops in the country’s major cities, including Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai.

▪ JD Sports Fashion has reported like-for-like sales in the year to 3 February 2024 have increased by 4.2%, boosted by new store openings in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.

▪ West Elm has launched an app. The app provides a tailored shopping experience for customers who can connect with the retailer’s design associates online or in person, create and share wish lists, pay using Apple Pay and create registries.

▪ H&M has seen a ‘shaky start’ to 2024 as first-quarter sales dipped by 2% year on year to £4bn. The H&M Group realises that the time has come to boost sales: improving the customer offer, the shopping experience and the supply chain are now top priorities. For example, the retailer wants to lower its prices, particularly in the United States.

▪ Former Gucci executive Marco Bizzarri has set up a new investment company. Bizzarri’s new company Nessifashion aims to invest in other companies and offer strategic advice to those companies.

▪ Activewear brand Adanola has named former Gymshark exec Niran Chana as their new CEO.

▪ Middle East payment solutions provider Tabby has shared Ramadan shopping figures. The payment provider processed $43m in sales in the UAE and Saudi Arabia in a single day, up +195% vs. last year.  The average order value stood at $177, which is +10% higher than non-Ramadan months. The top selling categories included mobile phones, insurance, and flight tickets.

▪ PVH Corp., which owns the Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein brands, has seen shares decrease by 20% after the retail group announced that it expects revenue this year to decrease by 6-7%. The retail group noted a difficult macroeconomic backdrop, particularly in Europe.

▪ Kingfisher plc, the owner of B&Q and Screwfix, is renewing its retail technology partnership with Virtualstock, a dropshipping and curated marketplace SaaS platform (whose other clients include Aldi, John Lewis, and Argos). Virtualstock’s tech is being used to support 1,100 B&Q stores across eight different countries in Europe.

▪ Foreign direct investment worth $31.5bn has been announced for Mexico this year including investment in eCommerce. A $2.45 billion investment will go to eCommerce giant Mercado Libre and a $2.13 billion investment will go to Walmart Mexico.

▪ PUMA Group has launched its first global brand campaign in a decade in a bid to boost its performance positioning ahead of a big year for sport. The campaign will run across TV, social media, outdoor, PR and point of sale worldwide

▪ SHEIN is expanding its presence in the UK with a debut pop-up in Liverpool this month.

▪ Frasers Group and Next are both eyeing up the potential purchase of Ted Baker's collapsed UK and European arm. This would continue Frasers Group's expansive M&A move who this week have also agreed to acquire Dutch sports goods retailer TWINSPORT as it aims to become the leading sporting goods retailer in EMEA.

▪ Marks and Spencer has signed a new agreement with HSBC for its credit offering and payment solutions, and the bringing together of digital payments and loyalty for M&S customers for the first time.

▪ Wolt has announced the launch of its own advertising service, Wolt Ads. Following a beta period, the company is now looking to scale this across its 27 markets.

▪ UNIQLO parent company Fast Retailing has posted a rise in both profits and sales during its first half as all geographies posted a “strong” performance with a +16.7% increase in operating profit to £1.34bn for the six months to February 29, 2024.

▪ THG has posted an increase in profits for the full year and maintained its profit guidance despite a slip in sales driven by “action to discontinue loss making categories”.

▪ Joules is hosting a series of live shopping events in a move that it said “harkens back to how we started 35 years ago”. The fashion retailer will hosted its first event this week, in partnership with live shopping solution provider Sprii, via Facebook Live. Joules said it aims to go live across the country and at key events in the coming months.

▪ Charlotte Tilbury-owner Puig is looking to raise more than £2.1bn through an IPO, making it the biggest stock market listing in the beauty sector in years. The Spanish beauty group, which owns 14 brands and several fragrance licences, is planning to list on the Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao and Valencia stock exchanges.

▪ Dr. Martens plc has launched a lawsuit against Temu, accusing the online giant of trademark infringement. The footwear retailer alleges that Temu has used Google ads to promote boots using keywords such as ‘Dr Martens’ and ‘Airwair'.

▪ Matalan is upping its online offering and has added 17 new third-party brands to its roster, including Mountain Warehouse and Regatta.

▪ Morrisons is trialling a personalised, AI-powered initiative, which rewards shoppers for purchasing particular brands they select from a list, something it says will provide value for both the consumer and brands.

▪ Rohlik Group aims to be a disruptor in European food retail, with plans to operate in thirty European cities by 2030. Rohlik's CEO has described the business as 'a combination of Tesco, Whole Foods Market, the local butcher, the baker, a fancy coffee shop, a pharmacy and a toy shop'.

▪ SHEIN is understood to be interested in making a bid for ASOS.com-owned TopShop as it continues on its M&A approach in Europe, with the fast-fashion brand snapping up Missguided last year.

▪ adidas has increased its full-year profit guidance after its performance exceeded expectations in the first quarter of 2024. In the three months to April, adidas posted an 8% increase in sales, while like-for-like sales improved 4% to €5.45bn in the same period.

▪ B&M Retail has seen its full year sales rise by 10.1% to £5.5 billion as it continues its focus on delivering everyday low prices. In the 53 weeks to 30 March, the group also benefited from an extra week of trading compared to the prior year and this year’s early Easter timing.

▪ JD Sports Fashion has opened a global flagship store on the world-renowned Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris, just in time for the Paris Olympics. The store’s design and layout have been carefully crafted to provide an immersive shopping experience.

▪ Despite revenues falling 18% year-over-year in the six months to March, ASOS.com's CEO insists the retailer is “delivering” against its turnaround plan. ASOS made more than 60% of its sales without any promotion or discounting in place during the first half of its financial year, as the business shifts focus towards building brand affinity.

Double what they made in 2022. Despite the typically lower margins on clothing. And with no physical stores.

They also had sales of $45bn.

That's more than H&M.
More than Primark.
More than Next.

In the UK fashion vertical, it now has almost the same clothing market share as Zara at 2.2%.

It's the third most valuable startup globally.

Whatever your thoughts are on Shein, it's difficult to ignore their rapidly expansive growth.

Shein profits double ahead of planned IPO

eBay is cancelling all of its fees for second-hand clothing. 

Depop is doing the same.

Vinted is already fee-less.

We can all take the cynical approach and chalk it down as a competitive move.

But whether it’s part of the reason, or even the only reason, the result is clear:
more second-hand sales, less pollution, more sustainability, and more money in the pockets of the seller in a cost of living crisis.

Sustainability is gradually becoming a must for eCommerce brands. And I can’t be cynical about that.
