Linkedin made me happy today.

For the last 6 days, things here have been a bit crappy because, for some unfathomable reason, images in my feed were suddenly being presented as horrible shrunken left-aligned thumbnails. 

Having moaned about it incessantly to anyone who would listen (almost no one), this afternoon, normal service has been resumed! 

It's good to find a bit of joy in the little things, right? 😬 

Whoop!! 

Trust is…..

The most important currency in life. IMO.

Whether it’s personal or work relationships.

Or when I’m presented with a new product, supplier, or event.

Most of us hold back until some credibility has been established.

Without it, how do we know if the “thing” we’re being “sold” is for real?

We often seek reassurance from those we know and trust BEFORE we venture into something new.

When we repeatedly hear our peers talking about a product/supplier/event inside a trusted network, a degree of credibility is given.

Even more so when it’s recommended directly to us by multiple people we know and trust.

Organic advocacy like this ONLY happens when strong, trusting relationships exists.

Trust has to be earned and continuously nurtured. It can take years to build.

So how do we build trust?

- Deliver on promises.
- Be truthful and transparent.
- Ask for feedback and use it to improve.
- Own mistakes and make amends.
- Be respectful. 
- Be accountable. 
- Be empathetic.
- Be helpful (spend time and money on it, with zero ROI expectation).
- Do the right thing (if we have empathy, we know what that is).

Overall, we’ve got to be authentic.

Trust requires authenticity.

Ghosting attendees between events is an accepted practice.....

For some types of events.

Commonly, attendees get an email after an event that says, "Thanks for attending. Here’s a link to a survey.”

But sometimes, that’s the last point of contact, especially for attendees of annual trade shows.

Until the organiser gets back in touch for the next event to say, "Registration is open”.

Up to 9 months of silence…. 

That silence "may" not matter to attendees who didn't get value from your event and aren't planning to return. 

And it "probably" won’t make much of a difference to those attendees who really LOVED your event and are already loyal advocates. 

But I reckon there are MANY attendees between those two extremes who need and would be grateful for more value. 

- The attendees who thought the event was “ok”.
- The attendees who thought the event was “good, but”.

These are the attendees who could be persuaded to give the event another shot. Or who, on the other hand, could go completely cold on it over the course of nine months.

Delivering value regularly will keep attendees warm. Even quarterly value is better than ghosting and then hitting them hard with “Register Now” emails for a 12-week period.

And what's the single easiest way to deliver value? Repurpose the sessions from your event and create:

- Short videos
- Social media posts
- Blog posts

An attendee can’t be simultaneously present in ALL of your event’s session rooms (assuming you have multiple rooms and tracks). 

If you’re proud of the quality of your speakers, content, and speakers, record and repurpose them.

Repurposing video is SO easy these days.

And if you’re up for doing more than the minimum, consider introducing webinars between in-person events.

Bring industry editors and speakers together to deep-dive or explore new angles around the most popular sessions at the last event. 

Consider using webinars to tee up interesting topics for the next event and to create anticipation.

I was recently asked whether it was possible to measure the effectiveness of these types of post-event campaigns. 

Absolutely.

Measure engagement around every activity, including open rates, views, reach, comments, reposts, clicks, website traffic, advocacy, and sentiment. 

The long-term impact? You should be seeing content engagement and advocacy rising and your in-person attendee retention rate improving.

LinkedIn is SUPER weird at the moment...

Let's not talk about how up and down the algorithm is 🙄 right now - but what the hell?!?

What I more urgently want to know is... 

Is anyone else noticing or seeing images (ONLY those with metadata titles/links embedded) being displayed in an unusual banner format where the metadata title takes up a 3rd of the space and the image is squeezed into the remainder?

They only started appearing like this (for me) yesterday afternoon, and no matter what device I'm using, as long as I am logged in to Linkedin, the images and posts display in this banner format.

For the rest of our team, images (and their metadata titles/with links embedded) are displaying in their usual format.

They kinda look like job ads...

Is LinkedIn a/b testing something - if so, ewwww 😱. 

I hate them and I want my old display back - it completely ruins the impact of the image as you can't see them properly. And the impact they have in a feed.....

Is anyone seeing the same?


Do you "dump" prospective attendees….

Straight into a reg form?

If you’re marketing to discover and convert new attendees for your events, should your CTA really be “Register Now”?

Is it realistic to expect prospects who have no prior relationship with your event to be ready to register there and then? Without checking it out first?

I’ve never attended an event I’ve not researched, at least a little bit. What about you?

For prospective attendees, this experience is made even worse when the “register now” CTA directs them to a 3rd party registration form….. from which they cannot access the event website*.

Related scenario - imagine you’re looking for a solution to a problem you have:
 
1. You see an ad for some relevant software, so you click on the link, hoping to learn more.
2. You get pushed into a form where you're expected to answer 30 fairly irrelevant questions and hand over payment for something you don’t know you want yet.
3. The only way you can learn more about the software is to google the website…..

It doesn’t make sense, does it?

Event marketers who take an empathetic approach use a “CTA” that directs prospects to a useful landing page. 

That’s not the registration form.

It’s a page where prospects can learn about the event and quickly see what’s in it for them should they attend. It will include the time commitment required and the cost. 

Ideally, it’s a landing page relevant to prospects like them or the home page.

If you’re marketing for new attendees, using a CTA that takes a slightly interested person straight to registration is not likely the experience they are looking for.

Why does this happen? 

Is it some magical thinking around how we wish attendee marketing works vs. how prospects actually decide to attend?
