🆆🅴🅻🅲🅾🅼🅴 🆃🅾 🅼🆈 🅻🅸🅽🅺🅴🅳🅸🅽 🅿🆁🅾🅵🅸🅻🅴! I'm Tammy Scudder—a lifelong learner, changemaker, and advocate. The Indiana Reentry Corporation was born from my own life experiences with incarceration and reentry. Navigating the difficult path back into society gave me a deep understanding of the obstacles justice-impacted individuals, especially women, face. I've lived through the systemic barriers, societal stigmas, and lack of support that make reentry so challenging. These experiences fueled my empathy and drove me to create meaningful change. Motivated by the hardships I endured in rebuilding my life after incarceration, I founded the Indiana Reentry Corporation with a mission: to provide justice-impacted individuals with the tools, resources, and support needed to succeed. I recognized that women, in particular, encounter unique challenges during reentry—such as trauma, family reunification, and access to essential services. In response, I designed a program that is comprehensive and gender-responsive, offering job training, educational opportunities, mentorship, mental health counseling, and housing assistance specifically for women. However, our program is open to all justice-impacted individuals, reflecting my belief that everyone deserves a chance to rebuild their life. Reducing recidivism is not just a professional goal for me—it’s a deeply personal mission. I know the importance of second chances because I’ve lived it. My leadership is guided by empathy, resilience, and a deep understanding of the systemic obstacles that must be overcome. Through the Indiana Reentry Corporation, I am committed to breaking the cycle of reoffending and creating pathways to sustainable, fulfilling lives. The impact of my work goes beyond the individuals I help directly. By focusing on empowerment, long-term success, and addressing the root causes of recidivism, I contribute to safer, more inclusive communities. My journey is a testament to the transformative power of lived experience, compassion, and belief in the possibility of new beginnings. The Clean Slate Initiative
You may be surprised to learn that 𝟭𝟴 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 women have a criminal record in the United States. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟰% 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨.𝗦. Many women with arrest and conviction records continue to face barriers to 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, and more, long after they have paid their debt to society. Despite their efforts to turn their lives around, the stigma of a past record often leaves them locked out of opportunities that could help them build a better future for themselves, their families, and improve their communities. Clean Slate can open doors to opportunity for millions of women nationwide. If Clean Slate legislation were passed in all 50 states, 𝟵 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 and nearly 𝟭𝟮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 would be eligible to receive 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 if Clean Slate legislation passes in all 50 states. Project:herself conducted a thematic analysis (we looked at the themes of responses) from a recent survey of women in prison in Townsville. We asked them what their 3 main concerns about the reentry post release were and their 3 main concerns impacting them while incarcerated. This is what the women had to say. When we incarcerate women, we break down the glue of our social fabric. We leave children with no one to love and care for them, we destroy future participation in the economy, we deepen the housing crisis, fuel violence and further marginalise. Most of the women in prison are charged with non violent offences. What are we actually achieving? We need to move toward addressing social issues that lead to offending, dealing with anti social behaviour within community and leave this mass incarceration model behind us.
