Bad managers can scar you for life.

2 years ago, I had started my first full-time job.

I was 20. A graduate fresh out of uni.

Like most other grads, I was excited to have a “grown-up job.”

But this was rather short-lived.

My manager made it so hard for me to like my job.

⇢ They used to time my toilet breaks
⇢ Call me on my sick days to see if I was “okay to start working”
⇢ Ask me to come into the office 5x a week when they came in 3x
⇢ Had me take a 4 hr (5am) train to come to the office on WFH day
⇢ Ask me to remove my AirPods because “important conversations were going on in the office”

Every single day I was in that office, I thought about leaving.

Even if that meant losing my sponsored visa.

And because of that one experience,

I will never go back to a 9 - 5 ever again.

Storytelling is hard.

(If you don’t know about the Main Character Effect)

Here’s how I’ve aced the Main Character Effect (so you can do the same):

1) Origin story:

— Where do you come from?
— What’s your background story?
— How did you become this main character?

2) Plot twist:

— What was the turning point in your life?
— Was it a struggle or a negative experience?

3) Character development:

— How did you deal with it?
— What did you learn from it?

4) Rebirth:

— Where are you now?
— How have things changed?
— What have you achieved since?

5) Evolution:

— What happens next?
— What are your goals?
— How are you getting there?

6) Refocus:

— What are the key takeaways?
— Why should your reader care about these?
— How do these experiences benefit your reader?

Here are 5 audience-building rules I swear by:

(Read this if you want to put your LinkedIn growth on steroids)

1) Never sit on the fence

Show people what you stand for.

Talk about things you care about.

That’s what makes people love you (or hate you).

Either way, it makes you more than just another name on their screen.

2) Have your ‘thing’

The Top 1% on LinkedIn all have their own thing.

Lara talks about personal branding + lifestyle design.

Luke talks about writing with AI + monk mode.

Jasmin talks about community + kindness.

So, we automatically associate these things with their name.

3) Make people care

Would you ever watch a movie if you had no idea who the main character was?

The only way to get your audience invested in your journey,

Is to take them with you.

Share your wins.

Share your failures.

Share where you come from.

Share where you’re going next.

Make them care about you.

4) Challenge your audience

You may forget a pretty face,

But you’ll never forget a face that proved you wrong.

Think about the misconceptions your audience has.

Then, break them down.

People love that (even if they don’t admit it).

5) Network strategically

You need to be selfish now to be selfless later.

I might get a lot of heat for this,

But you absolutely do not need to be networking with anyone and everyone.

Network with people who can add value to your life and business.

People who can be potential allies and partners.

Stop wasting your time in the name of networking.

Audience-building is a game with many players.

Your ability to stand out = your ability to win.

Which of these landed most for you?

I’m a 22 year old founder.

(But this has nothing to do with my business)

In the early days of my agency,

The fact that I’m “only” 22 used to raise a lot of eyebrows.

Yes, I even lost business because of this.

And I’m glad I did.

Because they would’ve been terrible clients anyway.

Most of my current clients are twice/thrice my age,

But they don’t care about how old I am.

Because they value what I bring to the table.

My skills.
My advice.
My results.

But most importantly, my courage.

Because that’s what it takes to go against the norm.

To be fearless and chase your dreams.

8 months ago, I wrote my first ever post.

It got 300 impressions and 4 likes.

(All from friends and family)

Today, my LinkedIn brings me 5 figs each month.

If I had given up after that first post flopped,

I’d probably never be here.

The point is:

Posts will flop.
Clients will leave.
Deals will fall through.
Algorithms will change.

But if you’ve got the courage to say,

“Nothing will stop me.”

And keep working your a— off,

4 months ago, I left a comment on my post.

“My Christmas wish is for someone to create my engagement list for me 🤕”

(I was joking lol)

The next day, a message pops up on my screen.

“Hey, saw that you were looking for help with your engagement list. I’d love to do it for you!”

I was obviously super happy.

She asked me a few questions,

And a few hours later sent me the most beautiful engagement list I’d ever seen.

I ended up hiring that person as our first community manager.

She now manages 2 of our biggest client accounts.

And is also someone I can always rely on.

But if she had never sent that first DM,

I would’ve never found her.

She would’ve never joined our team.

And I wouldn’t be writing this post for her.

So, shoot your shot more often.

You never know which one might change the game for you.

Storytelling is the ultimate money-making skill.

But 99% of founders get it wrong.

If I had a dollar for every time I saw “share personal stories” on this platform,

I’d have a penthouse in Burj Khalifa by now.

Like 99% of the content on LinkedIn, this statement is:

1) Generalised
2) Overused
3) Stupid

Your personal stories alone won’t get you sales.

Sure, they might get you a few followers.

But most of them would NEVER buy from you.

So, how do you tell stories that drive sales?

I call it “rev-gen storytelling.”

1) Map out your ICP’s:

→ Burning pains
→ Unfulfilled desires
→ And objections to your service

2) Pick one out of these:

→ For example, if you're the founder of a SaaS company that provides project management software for SMBs, your target audience’s burning pain might be decreased business productivity due to the struggle to streamline project workflows.

3) Choose an angle for your story:

The 2 most common angles are:

→ Customer-centric (BEST)
(How your software helped Mark, an SMB owner, increase business productivity and profits)

→ You-centric (GOOD)
(The last job I worked in was pure chaos. No team alignment. No clear project management system. Constant struggle to keep projects on track and meet deadlines. This is how {SaaS Company Name) was born})

4) Show them a transformation:

Structure your story as:

→ Pain point
→ Emotional response to pain point
→ Business issue relating to pain point
→ Solution that didn’t work
→ Your solution
→ The result

5) Pain-led CTA

Hope makes people happy.
Pain makes people buy.
Frame your CTA around their burning pain.
