For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved words. As a child, I delighted in discovering new ones—obsequious, rubicond, effloresce—and the vivid images they conjured in my mind. As I grew older, I began to understand the deeper power of language. The words we use—about ourselves and about others—shape our realities. We build possibilities or trap ourselves in cages, often without realising it, simply because of the stories we tell. Beneath all of this lies the emotional current of language. When someone is described as articulate, what I hear is that they know how to play the music of language—they can move others, through their mastery of words. So what I do is listen. Not just to what people tell me but to the way they tell me. And through doing this I help them refine and get clear on what they really want. I do this both individually for 1:2:1 clients or for business. Interviewing many people to create a clear picture of the collective voice of a business and what it needs. To my mind listening is the ultimate form of respect, and it is only through respecting someone that you can create the trust you need to challenge them. To say things they might never have heard before. The things that may give them the perspective they need to show up better for themselves as well as for others, and to get more out of life.
