⚠️ 26 teens have been murdered by Nigerian cybercriminals known as the "Yahoo Boys" in the past 18 months. They're on a mass killing spree, and there's no end in sight. 

👻 17-year-old Harry Burke died by suicide just hours after he was approached by a new contact on Snapchat, who posed as a girl and coerced him into sharing intimate images. Once those pictures were sent, the criminal threatened to ruin Harry's military career and destroy his life if he didn't send money.

📲 They sat down as a family to discuss it. During the discussion, an alert went off on his mother's phone. "This is how nasty these criminals can get," she said. "This person that had been threatening Harry actually messaged me when Harry was speaking to us, saying they were going to ruin him. And I really wish Harry hadn't seen that message."

📲 Harry called one of his military friends, who told him some pictures had already been sent to him. "You could see it wear on Harry, on his face. He was defeated."

💥The next morning, Harry's mother found him dead in his bedroom.

⚠️ In 2021, there were only 139 cases of financial sextortion reported to NCMEC. But in 2023, there were over 26,000 reported cases.

That's a 18,700% increase over two years. This is a public safety emergency.

📈 The Yahoo Boys are sending hundreds of thousands of fake friend requests to teens on Instagram and Snapchat.

📈 Tens of thousands of teens engage with a sextortion scammer.

📈 Thousands of teens are coerced into sending an explicit photo and are blackmailed.

📈 Hundreds will pay the criminals and get hooked into a long-term blackmail situation.

📈 Dozens will consider suicide as the only way out.

This is the deadliest scam in human history and it must be stopped.

TOP 10 Emerging Cybersecurity Threats for 2030

Weekend Rabbit Hole: Dopamine Culture. What started off as research on the neurology of rewarding paths in adult learning turned to my ongoing concern regarding kids, technology, and our society. Where do we go from here? 

Dopamine Culture is a newish buzzword, describing the trend of society to gravitate towards instant gratification and constant stimulation, largely fueled by technology. This phenomenon is causing significant risks to mental health, productivity, and overall well-being. 

I think it's amazing that research has evolved to understand dopamine not as a driver of pleasure, but more so a driver of desire and the motivation to pursue rewards. This shift in understanding highlights dopamine's role in anticipation and motivation towards achieving something, rather than just for the reward itself. We can think of it as a mechanism for aligning behaviors with needs, essential for survival, even across species, from bees to humans. Dopamine is also critical for learning, with surprise acting as a key trigger for dopamine release, influencing both positive and negative outcomes. (For instance, last night my kids taught me about the origin of shoelaces. And now I'll never forget). 

My concern arises with the modern world's transition to a state of "overwhelming abundance," as described by psychiatrist Dr. Anna Lembke in her book "Dopamine Nation." This abundance, coupled with the rapid pace of cultural consumption and the allure of novelty, has ushered in a change in our culture. Thriving on immediate rewards and relentless novelty, are we exploiting our brain's reward system and thus leading to compulsive overconsumption?  

Looking at the chart below, I wondered what could be next? Is this as bad as it gets or when the metaverse gets here, implants and chips in our brain, will we just get a continual dopamine stream pumped into our heads eternally? 

I worry for my kids with the unabated rise of digital platforms, designed to capture and hold our attention, feeding into this culture by offering sensational, divisive, or addictive content. These platforms, including social media, online gaming, and streaming services, exploit our desires for social connectivity, entertainment, and information, but keep users in a continuous loop of engagement. As we are finding out, it’s often hollow. 

This shift towards dopamine culture has profound implications for social interactions. The ease of digital connection is replacing traditional forms of relationship-building, we value convenience at the cost of depth and quality in human connections. I worry about this in terms of our cyber security and culture, but on a broader level as well- isn’t it time we came back to “real” AI (Actual Intelligence) and AR (Actual Reality)?  

Maybe more analog is the answer to a currently insecure digital reality.
