What are cognitive distortions?

→ mental biases that make us feel bad about ourselves

→ shortcuts that cause more harm than good

→ exaggerated or irrational thoughts that distort our perception of reality

→ reinforce negative thinking and emotions

→ lead to biased or inaccurate conclusions 

They can be identified and challenged to promote more realistic and balanced thinking,
→ question the validity of the distorted thought,
→ look for alternative perspectives
→ consider more balanced and realistic interpretations of situations

1️⃣ Black-and-white thinking
•viewing situations as extreme
•look for shades of gray

2️⃣ Over-generalizing
•drawing broad conclusions based on limited experience
•consider exceptions to the rule

3️⃣ Mental filter
•focusing on the negative and minimizing the positive
•recognize both negative and positive aspects 

4️⃣ Disqualifying the positive 
•dismissing positive experiences or qualities
•practice gratitude and focus on the positive 

5️⃣ Jumping to conclusions
•forming negative conclusions without enough evidence

•consider a more realistic possibility

•giving negative labels to self or others based on specific behaviors
•focus on specific actions, rather than making judgments
