🌊🚢 Decarbonizing the Maritime Industry - it can be done!
 
As the world sets sail toward a more sustainable future, the maritime industry is charting a course to reduce air pollution while curbing carbon emissions.
 
The Norwegian State, through Enova SF, has approved sponsoring Solvang ASA's Carbon Capture and Storage project. This exciting development enables the project to transition from onshore testing to full-scale shipboard installation aboard the ethylene carrier Clipper Eris- while at the same reducing Air Pollution!
 
Solvang, in collaboration with scrubber manufacturer Wärtsilä and the Norwegian research institute SINTEF, is carrying out a full-scale pilot of CO2 capture on board the gas tanker Clipper Eris.
 
The CCS project aims to demonstrate the entire value chain for handling CO2, including liquefaction and storage on the ship. The technology utilizes an amine cleaning system to capture ~70% of the main engine's CO2 in the exhaust gas.
 
🥸Looking closely at the project, you find a Crucial Component: A novel Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP) developed by Wärtsilä and key partners.
 
🚿A WESP uses a powerful electric field⚡ to charge even the tiniest PM particles (air pollution soot), making capturing them easier. These charged pollution particles are drawn towards collection plates inside the WESP, where a water film washes soot particles away, removing them from the exhaust gas.
 
🍃Enhanced Overall Efficiency: Combining a conventional scrubber and WESP creates a powerful two-stage cleaning system, maximizing removing a wide spectrum of pollutants, which again will improve the performance of the CO2 capture system!
 
💥Meeting Stricter Regulations: Increasingly tighter environmental regulations often necessitate removing a broader range of pollutants and smaller particle sizes. The scrubber + WESP combination helps ensure compliance with these regulations.
 
Solvang's mission with the CCS pilot aligns with the International Maritime Organization GHG-reduction framework and other global initiatives.
 
🫡In summary, combining carbon capture technology and enhanced air pollution cleaning systems represents a significant step toward a greener future for conventional fuels in maritime transport.

🍃Floating offshore units up to 100 MW: This will allow RA Wind to deploy its turbines in deeper water, where the wind is stronger and more consistent.

🍃Increased reliability and lifespan: This will reduce the cost of ownership and make offshore wind energy a more attractive investment.
 
🍃Designed for robotisation and artificial intelligence: This will further reduce the cost of operations and maintenance and make the turbines more efficient.

💥Norway should avoid focusing on Hydrogen - as it wastes resources!

For several reasons, focusing heavily on hydrogen in Norway could be considered a grave mistake. 

🍃Existing Abundance of Clean Energy:
Norway already has a vast and well-established hydropower infrastructure, which provides a reliable and affordable source of clean electricity.
Hydrogen investment could divert resources from further optimizing and expanding this existing green energy advantage.

💸Efficiency and Cost Concerns:
Hydrogen production, storage, and transportation have much lower energy efficiency than direct electricity use. The conversion processes create immense energy losses. 'Green Hydrogen' production (using renewable energy for electrolysis) is significantly more expensive than fossil fuel-based hydrogen production methods.

🌄Norway's abundant hydropower could be more cost-effectively used for direct electrification in sectors like transportation and industry instead of adding the extra step of hydrogen conversion.

Limited Domestic Use Case:
Norway's energy and transportation sectors are already undergoing rapid electrification due to cheap and clean hydropower availability. Today, Norway has over 600.000 BEVs and less than 250 Hydrogen cars...

💥For most applications, electrification is a much more efficient and direct decarbonization path than hydrogen.

🤔Uncertain Export Market:
The future of the European hydrogen market is still being determined. Uncertainty exists about the scale of demand and the competitive landscape.
Norway will face competition from countries with greater potential for cheap solar or wind-based hydrogen production.

⁉️Potential Benefits of Hydrogen:
Despite these limitations, Hydrogen might have strategic value for Norway in 
Hard-to-Decarbonize Sectors: Hydrogen could help decarbonize industries where direct electrification is difficult in some industrial processes.

Conclusion:
Norway's primary focus should remain maximizing its existing hydropower resources and driving further electrification across its economy. Norway also has more efficient ways to share surplus energy with Europe, such as HV electricity cables!

However, investing in research, development, and pilot projects within the hydrogen sector could be prudent for the following reasons:
- Remain at the forefront of technological innovation
- Identifying potential niche applications where hydrogen might offer advantages

While potential side effects like altered nutritional value and pest susceptibility need continued research, the CO2 conversation must be holistic.

Turning Excess into Resource: Could we see excess atmospheric CO2, a key climate change contributor, as a valuable asset to be harnessed for agricultural and industrial purposes?

Integrated Solutions: Imagine CO2 technologies paired with CO2-utilizing industries, mitigating emissions while driving innovation.

Costs, optimal CO2 levels, crop variations, and careful ventilation are vital factors. Still, rethinking CO2 offers a fresh perspective. It isn't just about managing emissions but exploring how this abundant molecule might hold solutions to enhance food security, combat resource scarcity, and drive new industries.
