My role at the Cats was to transform talented young athletes into proven, seasoned pros. This involved careful planning around education, feedback, and tight collaboration to monitor workloads, performance and progress within a team of subject matter experts and technical coaches.

I took this role as an opportunity to embed myself within a world-class sporting organisation with a history of sustained success. Along with my specific responsibilities, my main interest was understanding how successful cultures are conceived, created and nurtured to produce predictable results. I learned alot at the Cats and this education has been invaluable for my move into consulting.

Life isn’t like school. 

There are many paths for the same outcome.

And there are many outcomes for the same path. 

It’s not categorical. 
It’s not certain. 

And because of that, it’s not predictable. 

That irreducible uncertainty is terrifying for our lizard brain. 

So we flock to people who simplify reality and project certainty. 

And most are charlatans and demagogues. 

If you want to avoid ‘being scammed’, be wary of those who claim to have the all answers. 

Look for those who seek and ask better questions.

Last night, I spoke with one of the most courageous couples I’ve met. 

Money was not something they wanted to talk about. 

But their goals for the future were bigger than their fears. 

So we had a conversation. 

And it reminded me why I love this work. 

I watch people transform in front of my eyes. 

When they stare down their fears and decide to stop playing life on defence.

I fucking love it. 

Now it’s just the beginning for these two, but they’ve already done the hardest part. 

And now, we get to help them step into an entirely new relationship with money. 

And also with each other. 

After a shit tonne of coaching, here’s one thing I know for sure. 

Money doesn’t need to be a stressor or limiter, it can be a powerful enabler.

Imagine you need heart surgery. 

How would you want your heart surgeon to explain what needs to happen? 

Would you want them to say ‘just trust me’

Or might you want them to take a little time. 

Time to walk you through it
Time to answer your questions and
Time check that you’re comfortable. 

It’s been said a lot, because it’s often ignored, especially in finance.

People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. 

And what is the surest signal you care? 

Taking the time (your most precious resource) to be an empathetic guide. 

The curse of knowledge is real. 

You forget what it’s like to not know what you know. 

But remember, they’re trusting you with their future. 

So try imagining you are their heart surgeon and act accordingly (and follow me for more coaching tips 😉)

"How do you like to learn?" 

This question makes a statement. It shows your client you care about their experience of your service, not just the result. 

It also stacks value, by showing how your experience will also make them smarter.
