A newly created position, the Director of Communication and Story is the nexus, innovator, and facilitator for all communications, marketing, branding, and parent engagement initiatives for Marin Montessori school.

The Director’s focus is to develop and execute internal and external communication campaigns and engagement opportunities that promote the benefits of Marin Montessori School’s distinctive qualities and educational outcomes education. Through strategic thinking and compelling story-telling skills—including visual, written, graphic, and digital mediums—and direction of our flagship events and Parent’s Association, the Director of Communication and Story skillfully promotes the MMS educational experience, which brings tremendous value to children, adolescents, their families, and the larger world.

I worked closely with the Head of School on several uncommon and consequential projects including:
* Designing the strategy and messaging for the launch of The Mastery School of Hawken
* Creating ReDesigning School, a content marketing site that educates families about the necessity of school reform
* Creating the messaging and launching The Mastery Transcript Consortium
* Developing the messaging for the acquisition and merger with The Birchwood School 

I also taught in the English Department, focusing on writing courses and Media Literacy.

My primary focus at Westtown was to advance its work with enrollment management, fundraising, communications and marketing as well as developing innovative programming.

In this newly minted position, I was charged with designing approaches to achieve many of the school’s larger strategic goals. I also oversaw the school’s signature academic programming, “The Institute for 21st Century Education,” served on the Technology Review Committee and led a task force for re-imagining the Upper School’s design.

While I've taught everything from World Literature to Creative Writing in the last decade, I've become a leader in the field of Media Literacy education. Today's students grow up in a media-saturated world. A 2009 Kaiser Generation survey found that 8- to 18-year- olds are exposed to an average of 10.75 hours of media each day, an increase of more than two hours from 2004. But it's not just the number of minutes that makes a thorough media literacy curriculum necessary. It's the messages in those minutes that count. In response to this landscape, I designed a Media Literacy senior elective that I’ve taught at Hathaway Brown since 2001. I also led a campaign to expand the program and as a result launched a 7th grade Media Literacy Academy in 2010. 

In my time in the English Department, I’ve also taught World Literature, American Literature, Creative Writing and Journalism– all courses which I designed in part or in full.

Middle and Upper School English Teacher

In my four years in this post, I directed a complete overhaul of the office. More specifically,

•Working closely with the admissions office, I developed a marketing campaign called “1,000 Ways to Be Wildly Successful” that aimed to illustrate how Hathaway Brown’s distinctive programs and innovative culture help each student identify and pursue her passions. We’ve evolved the concept so that it’s become the essential lexicon of the school, applying it in a variety of platforms including a new viewbook, an elaborate ad campaign and an interactive web feature.

• I led the re-imagining and recreation of our website, including selecting a new design and hosting company, creating new content such as web videos and transitioning the faculty, parents and students to a new, more dynamic web culture.

• I worked very closely with the advancement office, developing a capital campaign communication theme and strategy as well as serving as the editor-in-chief and principal writer of our magazine.

• In November, 2010, Hathaway Brown hosted a national conference on educational innovation. I was a central figure in the conception and execution of the event that brought more than 600 educators to the school and lifted the school’s national reputation. The Head of School and I wrote the grant proposal that secured the $250,000 grant that, in part, paid for the Summit.

• I became a chief-of-staff like figure for the Head of School, assisting him in developing and articulating the expansive vision for the school. I wrote speeches and letters, helped direct responses to crisis situations, designed presentations and generally served as one of his few go-to people to get small and big things done.

• I hired three deeply talented colleagues and have supported their development, gradually increasing their responsibilities. I also manage a substantial budget and have consistently spent significantly less than what’s been allotted for our efforts.

Essentially from scratch, I designed and developed a series of programs, all of which hoped to help students become more proficient and passionate writers and thinkers. 

• I created a peer tutoring program, which partnered trained and proficient writers with developing ones.

• Each year, I conducted approximately 300 individual writing sessions with Upper School students.

• In arguably the Center’s most valuable role, I worked closely with the College Counseling office as I helped seniors compose their college essays.

• I initiated the city-wide High School Writers’ Festival and other programs that connected Hathaway Brown writers with the Cleveland writing community.

• In 2003, I created and began implementing a Writing Across the Curriculum program that worked with the Upper School’s various departments to assess and improve the writing tasks teachers offer their students.

• I also oversaw and managed the Center’s annual budget of approximately $15,000.

Kimball Union Academy

I taught writing intensive freshmen, sophomore honors and senior English classes. I also created and taught a Media Literacy senior elective. As the advisor of the school newspaper, I successfully improved its presence and quality. My wife and I also ran a sophomore girls’ dorm.

I taught American Literature course to eleventh graders. I also designed and implemented theme-based and writ- ing intensive English course for seventh graders that introduced and reinforced essay skills. I created and taught media studies arm of high school journalism class. As the team leader, I coordinated seventh grade activities with the other seventh grade teachers and oversaw the smooth operation of the 87-student class. I helped de- sign faculty evaluation procedure.

I designed and implemented two middle school English courses emphasizing American Literature -- Steinbeck, Twain, Salinger -- and one history course for eighth graders. I clerked faculty concerns committee and served on search committee for new head of school.
