Talking with the nursery owner, I felt a real connection. We shared stories about caring for the planet. (Turns out, we both see the world in a similar way.)

But here’s the moment that really stuck:

$50 and a few plants changed my whole vacation vibe.

Arrived at the beach house with my family, expecting only sun and waves.

Walked in and saw the yard-plants drooping, pots empty, not much color at all.

Could have ignored it.
Could have gone straight to the sand.
But I did not.

I saw those sad plants and had to act.
A quick trip to the nursery with my oldest daughter happened.

- $50 for soil, a few flowers, and fertilizer
- We got our hands dirty (and laughed a lot)
- Dug, watered, and filled pots together

The yard perked up. The house felt warm.

Suddenly the place was not just a rental.
It was ours (even for just two weeks).

Here is the part that matters:

Nurturing a few plants changed everything for me.
Didn’t cost much. Didn’t take long.
(But the reward felt huge.)

That little bit of care?
Gave back way more than I spent.

Growing up, my mom loved plants-she showed me how even a small touch could make a space brighter.
After she passed, I made a promise:
Leave things better than I found them.

I carry that lesson-at home, and in my business.

I almost didn’t launch Thank Heavens Bookkeeping.

In those late nights after my old job, my head was full of numbers. I saw how messy books made business feel impossible (I felt that stress myself).

More than once, I thought about quitting before even getting started. Change felt risky. Who was I to think I could help?

But I kept thinking about owners who felt lost in their own numbers.

→ Spreadsheets in chaos
→ Receipts in every drawer
→ Tax time like a thunderstorm

What did I wish someone told me back then?

Here’s what I know now (and what you can use today):

 ---> Reconcile your accounts every single month. Don’t leave it for “later.” Your bank and bookkeeping should always match. One missed transaction can throw it all off.

 ----> Keep receipts sorted by month, not by vendor. Easy to find, easy to match. (A box or a digital folder both work-consistency is key.)

 ----> Review your Profit & Loss at the end of the month. Ask yourself: Did spending match your goals? Did cash flow grow or shrink? If you don’t know, now is the time to check.

 ----> Categorize expenses as soon as you pay them. Don’t trust memory weeks later. Use notes on each transaction for clarity. Your future self will thank you.

 ----> Set a “Bookkeeping Day.” One hour, same time each week. No multitasking. Turn off your phone, pull up your numbers, and update records.

I am not special. If I can clean up books and find peace in the numbers, you can too.

The truth is most messes are smaller than they look once you start.

Nobody’s books are perfect. But action-tiny, weekly, boring action-always wins.
