Known to my friends & peers as 'That Startup Guy' & as the founder of Startup Foundation Venture Studio, though you might’ve noticed that I had been missing from Linked In for a couple of years. After 5 years of effort in developing a venture studio model in Australia, & 2 years of lock-downs, plus breaking up with my partner of 10 years; .well, that had all taken its toll.…my tank was empty. What I was doing was ‘on the money’, but I was “too soon” for the Australian startup & investment landscape. I wanted to continue in the venture studio track - I just couldn’t see a path to clean/no strings capital for a fund. And therefore, the goal was unlikely, given that I had tried most pathways in. During that time, my health, wealth & relationships with the people that mattered, had all taken a beating. It was in that time that I came to faith. And then …...a revelation. Now I had a possible new plan & a hypothesis, and needed time to test it & learn. So I decided to change the game, starting clean in a place that I knew no-one, and that no-one knew me. 12 months ago, I moved to a rural part of Australia, as part of a restorative approach to rebuilding my life. It was time to be 'just a guy' for a while. Part of the move was to test the availability, accessibility & size of rural $ in the opportunity of funding a VC fund/venture studio. I’ve discovered that my hypothesis was underestimated. I’ve been in the country about a year (why didn't I make the move sooner?) and now suddenly, it all made sense; every mis-step & failure had brought me here. Part of that is that I’m not just some crazy lone wolf entrepreneur…..well OK, I’m still that, but I come from a long line of successful entrepreneurs, inventors & business owners. But was hidden from me until after my mum recently passed away. She either didn’t know, or care, about the family heritage of success, of coming from one of the most successful entrepreneurial families of 19th century Europe (there a big story in that alone). For anyone wondering whether it’s worth making that leap of faith to move out of a big city, just ask me. I can outline a list of benefits that more than outweigh any perceived disadvantages. And the broken relationship? Well, it turned out pretty well - I married the woman of my dreams, after we'd been together for 10 years. From now, I’ll be starting to drip out my new approach, and all that I’ve learned. Sorry to be so cryptic, but it’s not yet time for reveals.
