I bombed an interview for a marketing gig last week. 

One question just caught me off guard. 

I'm still cringing about it. 

So, it was a video interview. 

Well, kinda. 

Prerecorded questions.

Then a countdown...

And GO! 

The first couple of questions were pretty standard. 

One about my skills. One about my background. 

But then came the curveball:

"A chef is making a meal named after you. What ingredients are in the meal and why?"

And...start the countdown.

Shiiit...

Brain freeze. 

Countdown, over. 

Uh....

And then there I am, with some crazy mumbling about an Asian stirfry....

With surprise sweets inside. Caramel, maybe. 

Cos, you know... my copy is hot and edgy, but also kinda...uh...off the wall?

("WTF am I saying?" - my brain) 

When it was over, I spent the next few hours shuddering at the memory.

I get that the questions are a fun way to gauge personality fit. 

And we gotta have fun in marketing, right?

But I do wonder how many skilled and experienced candidates lose out on questions like this.

Especially as most copywriters are introverts who excel at quiet thinking and carefully measured strategy rather than high-stakes improv.

I was at least 2 whiskeys short of being able to deliver a zinger on this one.

People don't read — they skim.

Mildly interesting facts:

67% of people skim
19% read word-for-word
100% of people hate walls of text.

Ok, I pulled that last stat out of my arse.

But it's human nature to choose the path of least resistance.

When you write copy, you want to compel action.

It's your job to make that action feel effortless.

And to keep readers moving.

Here's how you do it:

→ Strong hooks
→ Open loops
→ Short paragraphs
→ Choppy sentences
→ Bullet lists (aim for 3-5)

But won't skimmers miss important bits?

Maybe.

But great copywriters also use repetition to:

↳ Reinforce the benefits.
↳ Recap the key messages.
↳ Remind people what matters.

That's what makes your call to action more powerful.

Remember this:

Nobody gives a fudgecake about what you have to say.

This is how I approached the Hero section when writing website copy for GroWrk recently.

First:

Be clear → on what you're selling
Be direct → about the value it offers
Be concise → about the features + benefits

Congrats, you just nailed the fundamentals of good copywriting.

Now, wrap it up by selling the transformation...

Remember:

Sometimes, the best copy is plain and simple.
