When I was 21 years old, I believed I knew how to lead... However, leading a team of 30 young soldiers to East Timor and later boarding people smuggling boats in the Indian Ocean, I realized that I was making many mistakes. I was not a good leader. Fast-forward 18 years, I had the opportunity to command the largest Helicopter unit in the Australian Defence Force. Although I still didn't have all the answers, I acknowledged this to my team when I took command. Together, we achieved incredible things: - We were deployed to Papua New Guinea to support the APEC Economic Leaders Forum. - We provided support during the floods across Northern Queensland, Australia. - We flew all over the Solomon Islands to enable their National Election. - We developed the Amphibious Helicopter Capability for the ADF, which involved a combined force of Chinook, Tiger, and MRH90 Taipan helicopters. - We commanded the Multinational Helicopter Force that supported the Bushfire Disaster across Australia. A Snapshot of What I've Learned: - Leadership is a Practice - creating the right environment for your team is crucial. - No one is an expert - we are all at different stages in our leadership journey. - Leadership is a contact sport - it involves engaging with those above, below, and alongside you, taking hits, and getting back up. - The best leaders create other leaders - this is how you build a fantastic organisation. - The team collectively shapes the culture - as a leader, you influence the climate in which your team can thrive. What I'm Learning in the Next Stage Outside of Uniform: - Ideas that may seem basic in the military can be foreign in the business world. - Ideas alone are useless without implementation and a clear learning pathway. - Leadership is universal - the challenges are real and becoming more urgent as the future progresses. How I Help Others: - I am passionate about helping emerging leaders accelerate their leadership practice. - I work with teams to reimagine their ways of working. - I also assist established leaders in enhancing their climate to foster the growth of their leadership teams. - My tools of trade include speaking, facilitating, experiential learning design, and strategy co-design.
