AI doesn't kill interesting thinking.
People do, when they hand their judgment over to it.

I've been thinking about Justin Oberman's latest newsletter on AI and the death of interesting thinking. He uses Isaiah Berlin's fox vs hedgehog idea: hedgehogs see the world through one big system; foxes live with contradiction and complexity. 

AI, he says, is a hedgehog machine. If we work inside that machine all day, we start thinking like hedgehogs too - chasing templates, rules, and neat frameworks until our work deflates into sameness.

I think he's right, but there’s a missing piece: a lot of what he calls  "fox thinking" is already being done by AI, at least on the surface. 

Give a model enough examples, and it can come up with a half-said line, decide what to leave unsaid, sound like it’s letting the reader in on something, or write for a tired social media manager scrolling at 11:30 p.m. 

AI can absolutely look foxy.

The difference isn't in the output. It's in who chooses, and who has to live with that choice.

A model can throw a hundred options at you. It can remix a thousand voices into one neat sentence. But it doesn’t decide which line ships. It never has to sit with the awkward silence, the unsubscribe, the  "this feels off " reply, or the  "this hit me at exactly the right time " DM.

Wisdom is lived experience.

It comes from the hundred times you picked the easy line and regretted it, the meeting where the  "clever " phrasing confused everyone, the client who trusted you more when you said less, the moment you realised the right answer for the brief was the wrong answer for the human reading it. 

That’s what you bring when you ask: Out of everything I could say here, what am I actually willing to stand behind?

The more we use AI for ideas, drafts, and structure, the easier it is for everyone’s work to start sounding the same. Same patterns, same turns of phrase, same safe takes.

The only real way out of that sameness isn’t  "better prompts. " It’s better input: more lived experience that isn’t scraped from the internet.

Go outside.

Notice what your actual customers say when they’re annoyed, bored, relieved.

Watch how your team behaves when something goes wrong.

Listen to the things people almost say but swallow.

Then bring that back to the page.

Justin is right to warn about the  "death of interesting thinking," but the machine doesn’t get the final say.

5 years ago, I identified a critical gap at my former employer, A2 Hosting (now hosting.com), they did not have a song that sounded exactly like Norah Jones’s "Don't Know Why," but with lyrics about server downtime.

When I presented the asset to the team, the Slack channel went silent. I assumed they were stunned by the synergy of jazz piano and web hosting technical specs. In retrospect, it is possible they just didn't like it.

It was a passion project done entirely in my free time. I love finding ways to inject a little creativity (and jazzy piano (and jazz hands 👐)) into the corporate world.

Cool, so even an LLM has better work / life boundaries than I do.

If ChatGPT can take a breather, this is your sign to log off and do nothing for 5 minutes. Like, literally nothing. Buffering wheel IRL.

(also, serious question, what does decompressing even look like for an LLM? 🤔 )

I changed my gender on LinkedIn to test reach on the platform, and within 48 hours, I woke up in a Ralph Lauren quarter-zip, already drafting a manifesto about "dominating the marketplace."
