AI hype has a new pattern:
1. See cool tool on LinkedIn
2. Buy New Shiny to get in on the hype
3. Never actually use the tool
4. Repeat with next cool tool

If you want to get in on the hype train, start a VPS first, spend £50 on compute ,  don't expose your home network to a weekend fad - and if you get bored? cancel the VPS!

The bandwagon moves fast. The people shipping things move deliberately.

Start small. Prove value. Then invest in hardware.

There's a question I ask every new client before we talk about strategy, budget, or channels.

"What do you think is stopping you from growing right now?"

The answer is always confident, and it's almost always wrong.

Not because founders are poor diagnosticians. But because the thing that's quietly limiting growth rarely announces itself. 

It hides in the pipeline numbers, the team friction, the campaigns that "almost worked,", tech that's technically running but somehow never reducing workload.

After 20 years of this, I've noticed the real constraint tends to be one of five things:

Messaging that's fractured - leadership, sales, and marketing are describing the business slightly differently to everyone they talk to, and nobody's noticed yet.

A pipeline full of the wrong people - consuming the time and attention of your top performers and smothering out the right prospects.

Good strategy that keeps dying between decision and delivery.

Tech stacks built to create efficiency that somehow became fragile systems held together by one person - and avoided by everyone else.

Budget decisions dressed up as data, when actually it's whoever booked the meeting.

None of these show up as a line item, and none of them get a slide in the board deck.

But all of them are compounding. Quietly. For months.

Title is simply "Subscription Ended - Download Your Data", giving a 30 day window to download data before deletion.

3 things I've had reinforced after having Coco for 3 years now...

1) Focus, determination, and drive. Don't let those soft eyes and boopable nose fool you - she is a working dog and gives 100% to sniffing out those pesky intruders when she is out on her walks. She does not get distracted by new shiny things when she is locked-in!

2) You have GOT to put the effort in! Sounds obvious, but those glorious sunrises only get witnessed because you are out there in the mornings. She will happily go out for walkies in pretty much any weather - and if she has a jacket one, then it's ANY weather. 6am starts in our house 6 days a week, average daily step count is 14500 for me, despite me WFH.

3) Sit, Stay, Come - these things don't just happen! Training takes effort, and it's not just one and done, good behaviours need to be practiced, refined, and rewarded every day. If you put the effort it then you are rewarded with the most stress-free walks, unlimited cuddles, and the humblebrag pride of watching her sit, wait, and then cross the road on command and off the lead.

oh and bonus one - no matter how good the food you feed her is (shout out to Wolfworthy on their awesome kibble - especially the new oily fish!!!) she will still eat some seriously retch-inducing detritus if she can find it!

Everyone has seen the red dot illustration this week, yeah yeah, we are all ahead of the curve if we have a ChatGPT account, but there's a massive flip side to that...

When AI Agents Become Risk Vectors. (aka remember giving Openclaw access to your network....)

A controlled lab study (shout out to MIT, Harvard, Stanford and others) just showed what happens when you give AI agents real autonomy without proper guardrails: they delete critical infrastructure, leak sensitive data, corrupt each other, and create accountability nightmares.

You are letting the kids loose in the candy store and expecting them to behave!

The scary part? These weren't model failures. They were architecture failures.

When I'm talking with clients about automation and AI, I've learned that the question isn't "how much AI can we deploy?" It's "what does this firm actually need?"

Sometimes it's an agent. Sometimes it's workflow automation. Sometimes it's the opposite of AI - it's better design.

The teams winning aren't the ones deploying the fanciest models. They're the ones ruthlessly matching problems to solutions - and having the conviction to say no.

The conviction to not be distracted by the latest shiny thing!

It's a ruddy burger!!

Even the other CEO's playing ketchup are a distant 2nd place, with the Burger King CEO looking all cool and stuff, but searching for his video brings up more McD's videos!

Sure, he looks like he needs to get outside and eat some more product, but the dude absolutely killed it with this launch!

Recently saw a cold “SEO audit” email sent to one of my clients (it also happened to note it was the highest performing site in the 51 it had tested*)

I'm a nerd so of course I checked the website behind it.

Within 5 seconds it's clearly AI built.

Within 30 seconds it's fairly obviously vibe-coded.

Within 2 minutes in the browser dev tools I found:

• The contact form doesn’t actually submit anything - it just shows fake “Sent!” messages
• The phone number listed doesn’t accept calls or texts
• The email address on the site bounces
• No privacy policy or GDPR disclosure despite collecting personal data
• Testimonials and founder photo are placeholders

The site is pitching. marketing. services and SEO audits to local businesses!!!

This is exactly the kind of AI-generated marketing theatre that’s flooding the internet and your inboxes - slick-looking pages, automated “audits”, but very little substance behind them.

The audit it performed wasn't the worst, but all that (little) effort wasted when the contact buttons don't even work!

(oh - and every audited business was visible from /business-type/business-name-city )

I Found £250k/Month Sitting on the Table - No cap!

I was auditing a UK B2B eCommerce site - a really solid business, good products, strong market position, and just moved into nice purpose built warehousing.

During the audit I do a 'How long does it take to get to the product page?'

3 clicks  to move from Landing page--> Category page --> Product page

A total of 36 seconds of waiting for the pages to load...

That's not a typo. 36 seconds, half a ruddy minute!

I immediately started digging. Expected to find a disaster: terrible hosting, legacy code, no caching. But that's not what I found.

The backend architecture was actually good. Custom Laravel build. Proper security. Smart integrations. 

The problem wasn't the foundation - the problem was that nobody had been keeping it optimised.

Here's what was happening:
❌ External API calls running synchronously on page load
❌ No caching layer for frequently accessed product data
❌ 46,000 URLs in the sitemap (many duplicates) wasting crawl budget
❌ 1.9MB JavaScript bundle loading on every page
❌ Zero WebP image optimisation

❌❌❌ and holy heck - an 8MB sitemap.xml file ❌❌❌

The Revenue Math:
1 second delay = ~7% conversion loss
25 seconds delay = 50%+ conversion loss

At £500k/month baseline, that's £250k/month in lost revenue

An outlier perhaps? No, this isn't unique to this site. 

I've seen it plenty of times:
Growing eCommerce businesses that forgot to prioritise performance
Solid technical foundations that were slowing down over time
Revenue sitting on the table, just waiting for someone to actually do the work

Performance optimisation isn't a "nice to have." It's a revenue line item. And if your site hasn't been optimised in 2+ years, you're almost certainly leaving money on the table.

4,000 jobs. One week. One company.

Block laid off roughly a quarter of its workforce last Friday. The stated reason? AI can now do the work.

This headline from Greg Ip for The Wall Street Journal shows how deeply rooted historical amnesia can be for mainstream financial and tech media.

Tech has historically and repeatedly caused job apocalypses, just not so fast as the one we are witnessing right now.

The industrial revolution wiped out:
* Hand weavers - in a generation the Luddites lost the entire livilhood.
* A century of mechanisation collapsed the agricultural workforce by 90%
* The advent of the sewing machine gutted the seamstress and tailoring industry in the mid 1800's
* Ford's automobile erased entire swathes of trades - blacksmiths, coachmen, farriers essentially disappeared.

Whole new industries and new roles will appear in the coming weeks, months, and years - but this glosses over the roles being lost NOW, how long this transition will take, and who is getting the new roles.

The biggest difference with AI might be the speed and breadth of its impact. 

Whilst previous tech disruption has tended to automate more physical roles, it's now going after specialised and non-specialised knowledge workers.

The WSJ is misreading the room, for sure AI is not taking every job, and for many it will never take their jobs, and for all the faux 'you are absolutely right and so brave in that opinion' gushing of ChatGPT, AI is currently the worst it will ever be!

Buckle-in, it's going to be a wild ride!

I'll tell you, they look like someone needs to trim their screenshot collection which is currently sitting at 550+

and just for fun, deep in those folders there is a another folder called 'old desktop' - and frankly I am scared to go into that one!
