I’m Theresa Pong, a marriage counsellor and certified EFT Therapist (EFCT & EFIT), passionate about helping couples move from crisis to connection. With over a decade of experience, I’ve walked alongside individuals, couples, and families through marital conflict, divorce, trauma, and emotional struggles — guiding them toward healing, hope, and stronger bonds.

As a Registered Clinical Supervisor and Registered Counsellor (Singapore Association for Counselling) and Registered Social Worker (Singapore Association of Social Workers), I combine professional expertise with a heartfelt approach. I also serve as an Adjunct Lecturer in Psychology at the Singapore University of Social Sciences and provide clinical supervision for counsellors in training.

For me, counselling is more than a profession — it’s a calling to 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦, 𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 so individuals and couples can thrive again.

“I'm ugly. That's why I’m not lovable.”

These thoughts haunted me since my teenage years 😔. I never said them out loud, but they shaped how I saw myself.

My 20s were turbulent. I longed for love, yet deep inside, I felt I didn’t deserve it. In Junior College, being one of four girls in a class of 20 (I was in the Science Faculty then), I often felt invisible. Some classmates teased me about my dark eye circles and how I dressed.

University wasn’t kinder. I was told I looked like a “Christmas tree” 🎄 and that I should lose weight. These small comments landed like deep wounds and shaped how I moved through the world.

To feel accepted, I pushed myself—chasing grades, leadership roles, saying yes to everything. I wanted to be seen, even when I was quietly breaking inside 😞.

By my mid-20s, I hit a low. Toxic relationships, anxiety, and a loss of identity. Then a kind soul suggested counselling. Over seven years, I learned compassion, courage, boundaries, and the beauty of saying “no” 🌸.

Through this healing, I found my calling—pursuing a Master’s in counselling and joining the social service sector. Healing begins when we let ourselves be truly seen🌷.

That’s the heart of The Relationship Room: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞, 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

Our family is off for a short-haul holiday to Bangkok 🇹🇭✨

Over the years, we’ve made it a little ritual to pause, get away, and reconnect — not through big moments, but through the small things we share together.

Whether it’s exploring new food, getting lost in night markets, or simply slowing down… these pauses help us stay grounded as a family and remind us why connection matters. 💛

Is it okay to share my marital woes with a colleague of the opposite gender? 🤔

This is a question I hear more often than you’d imagine.

When we’re hurting at home, it is natural for us to look for someone who feels safe to talk to.  

And sometimes, that person happens to be a colleague we see every day. It starts innocently — a listening ear, a moment of comfort, someone who “gets” you. 💬

But here’s the part we don’t always notice:

𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐲.

Not because we intend for it to… but because sharing our pain creates a special connection. And when that connection begins to feel easier than the one at home, that’s when lines get blurry.

Ask yourself:
🪻 Why am I turning to this person?
🪻 What am I craving that I’m not asking my spouse for?
🪻 Would I be okay if my spouse did the same?

There’s nothing wrong with seeking support — we all need it. But it matters who we turn to and how much of our heart we hand over.

If you’re feeling alone in your marriage, the bravest step isn’t finding comfort elsewhere.

It’s letting your partner know, “𝘐’𝘮 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘶𝘴.”

That’s where 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 begins. ❤️

⚡ Anger spreads fast — even in loving relationships. Have you felt it?

When your spouse gets angry 😡, do you notice yourself reacting the same way? Your heartbeat increases, your tone gets louder, and suddenly both of you are caught in a cycle that escalates really fast.

In close relationships, emotions are contagious 🌊. One person’s frustration can trigger defensiveness or anxiety in the other — often before either of you even notices. 

And this is normal. It’s how we’re wired to connect.

The good news? This #connection can work for you. Couples can learn to 𝐜𝐨-𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 — helping each other calm down and feel safe when emotions run high. It’s not about fixing your partner or solving the problem instantly. 

It’s about being present, showing understanding, and creating safety together❤️.

Simple ways to practice it: pause before responding 🛑, take a deep breath together 🌬️, soften your tone, or hold hands 🤝. These small gestures say, “𝘐’𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘸𝘦’𝘭𝘭 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.”

When couples co-regulate, conflicts become less about winning and more about connecting. It’s not about perfection — it’s about building trust, safety, and closeness ❤️, turning tension into opportunities for connection.

🌿 Leaders often hold space for everyone else: but who holds space for the leader?

In my work, I’m reminded that emotional awareness isn’t just a personal skill.

It’s a #leadership advantage.

When we’re attuned to our inner world, we respond with clarity and steadiness.  When we’re disconnected from it, stress often spills into our decisions, our tone, and our #relationships — both at home and in the workplace.

One principle I carry closely (and one I’ve deepened through being among the few therapists in Singapore certified in Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, EFIT) is this:

 ✨ 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞; 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐬.

A simple leadership practice to try today:
🖊️ Notice one emotion that surfaced strongly
🖊️ Name it without minimising it
🖊️ Ask, “What is this emotion trying to tell me or protect?”

Often, this small pause becomes the moment where insight meets compassion❤️.
