In 1997, I left the Air Force and jumped into commissioned sales...and was kicked in the teeth. Within six months, I was drawing unemployment benefits in Alabama when my second son was born just 360 days after my first! So there I was... —married less than two years with... —a stay-at-home wife with... —two sons under one with... —no contacts... —no sphere of influence... —in a protracted legal case against my former employer. Try selling that to recruiters and hiring managers. So I did what I had to do. I looked in the classifieds and found another sales job. And in late April 1998, I began my illustrious career of selling...trailers...ahhh...excuse me, manufactured homes, in Mobile, AL. Now I know what you're thinking: "Wes, that sucks." And you'd be wrong. In my first 52 weeks, I made 52 sales, which paid me exactly $100,000 (that's worth $184k today!) And a salesman was born! Since then, I've successfully sold everything from test & measurement gear to giants like Sprint, Google, & eBay, to sales training & workshops to Dell, and negotiation tactics to chiropractors, insurance salespeople, and marketing automation to an asbestos remediation training company. (It's a thing. They're in Tucson.) What I learned from speaking around the world and working with thousands of professional salespeople, sales managers, business owners, and entrepreneurs in 28 different countries is that regardless of what you sell, there are fundamental things you must get right, or you're dead in the water.
