The second place team at our hackathon this weekend was a tool that created a sandbox within Canvas Medical which would test all these AI vendors claims - can they actually schedule an appointment if the patient calls in? What if we simulate a patient that's short of breath - does the AI understand and know the urgency level?

Talking to people at the happy hour after, it's clear that this is a problem a lot of companies are dealing with right now. AI vendors say they can do a million things but it's hard to figure out how to test that.

The Trilliant Health report is always an excellent read on interesting trends in healthcare 

The biggest surprise to me was seeing what is causing mortality changes. Accidents was way lower in the last year, but I'm curious why? 

And the jump in chronic liver disease deaths (especially amongst people 18-44) was especially concerning. Also curious if people have a good sense of why this is happening (NASH? Alcoholism? etc.)

New post - we go through why eligibility checks are a hard process

We talk about the current pain points and why there are so many downstream issues that happen as a result

- The patient can’t tell which doctors they can see without getting a huge bill

- The practices send a bill to insurance only to find out it’s been denied because the eligibility check was incorrect. Now they have to spend their time arguing with the insurance company.

- The patient was told they’re eligible when they weren’t, and now the provider is sending them a bill for whatever the insurance won’t cover.

- The patient can’t pay the provider, and now the practice has to write off the revenue.

it seems like in the arms race, one of the reasons that providers have a huge leg up is that they have an EMR and some form of central place where there data actually lives. Even if it's not perfect, it exists and time has been spent trying to wrangle a lot of the disparate siloes together under the hood.

Payers on the other hand seem to have MUCH messier internal data infrastructure because of how old they are, how much they retrofit to old systems, and the number of cobbled together independent systems done via acquisitions and outsourcing to third-parties for certain decisions (e.g. prior auths, claims processing, etc.)
