Hello. I'm an experienced, award-winning radio & podcast professional as featured in Podpod's 2023 Faces to Watch. My mum thinks I'm famous, which is nice.

By day I am the Senior Producer for Fintech Insider by 11:FS. By night I make original and branded shows via Podcasts by Liam, and I also proudly volunteer for the Hospital Broadcasting Association.

Minimum wage is £11.44 / hour. Typically paid for UNSKILLED work.

So a day working in a role like this is gonna earn you c. £115.

Editing your podcast / video / copy is a SKILLED job. 

You'd therefore expect to earn more than minimum wage for it.

Just editing content (whether you like to believe it or not) requires, at min: 

- downloading footage / recordings (takes time)
- file management & organisation (takes time)
- understanding what your content is about (takes time)
- ordering your content on a timeline (takes time)
- mastering the audio of your recording (takes time)
- managing the video of your recording (takes time)
- removing the unwanted elements of the recording (takes time)
- additional checking for errors (takes time)
- exporting the content, naming the files etc (takes time)
- sending the content to you, communicating with you (takes time)
- managing and dealing with any amends (takes time)
- various other tedious stuff (takes time)

It's way more than a 'quick' couple of hours task.

Plus it requires associated PAID-FOR subscription overheads (ie internet, editing software, file sharing tools, hard-drive storage etc.)

Unlikely your £250 is going to be commercially viable for the work. 


And it's not acceptable to undervalue or exploit the 'creative' stereotype.
 

It's not 2017 anymore!! Content is king and, done properly, not cheap.

Budgets being allocated are not reflective of the current costs of living.

We must all work together to listen, educate & allocate resource better.

For advertising purposes I get why there has to be some separation, but that can be easily done

Do you ever see someone on LinkedIn who you thought you were connected to, but who clearly unfollowed you, and wonder what the trigger was?

I actually don't think I've ever unfollowed someone who wasn't a spammy Apple podcast promoter.

Do you unfollow people?

What makes you do it?

This sounds worse than it is in the short term. Their measurements aren't going to change overnight.

Even in the long term, some ongoing overlap of standards and expectations just makes sense, and if saving a few thousand dollars means one extra person might keep their job when times get tough, then so be it.

However, I am slightly cautious. They could go rogue, and that will be problematic for a number of reasons.

So maybe let's all agree on a best practice for measuring downloads.

And maybe let's also not charge companies a small fortune to get a stamp of approval for complying with said best practice.
