Once a young adult wrote me a message that I can only describe as the most positive message I’ve ever received.

A young adult with autism, spreading love that completely melted my heart.

Today I met a very special neurodivergent individual who is nothing but:

People often get confused and ask, “Why are you sending the same thing in the comments?"

"You're a legend, emerald, diamond, cosmic shining star, apple of my eye, ruby orange legend".

Autism is routine, it is empathy, and I feel very lucky to have met someone who in my eyes is an inspiration to young adults and especially with a neurodivergent mindset like him.

Today I met my orangutan jasmine teapot = I love you in neurodivergent language!

There was a time in my life when my mum didn’t want to speak to me and told me to leave the house after lying about calling the doctors. I didn’t even know why I was calling for.

The words I’ll never forget:

“You’re not right.”
“Why do you act like that?”
“You need professional help.”
“You cannot be in this house anymore.”

Being honest, I had nowhere to go.

My mum and I have never really seen eye to eye. Too similar, both very sensitive. With family, trust is everything and I broke it many times.

👉🏻 I promised I wouldn’t come home the next day with no contact

👉🏻 I promised I wasn’t gambling

👉🏻 I promised I wasn’t taking substances

👉🏻 I promised I was taking the antidepressants I was prescribed 

Deep down, I was telling her all this just to keep her happy but I was lying to her the whole time.

Family always let you come back but a "mother’s love" sees through it all.

I once told my mum, “One day I’ll take you away and give you the best time to say thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”

Her reply: “Heard it all before, Thomas. You are a compulsive liar. You’re not the person I know anymore.”

She was right. 

Sometimes it takes the people who love you the most to make that penny drop. But you only change when you want to do it for yourself.

It’s been 25 years since we last went away as a family. Nearly 10 years ago I hit rock bottom. Six and a half years ago I was finally diagnosed with ADHD and now I am the son she always wanted.

I told her I’m here, paying you back, but also keeping the promise I made all those years ago.

Today, that promise comes true to Portugal! 🇵🇹

My parents are now 75 and 71. Making good memories count now makes up for the bad ones.

People can change. It just takes time to mend those bridges even with family.

Sometimes people forget that “stimming” isn’t just something kids do, it’s a big part of adult neurodivergent life too.

What is Stimming?

Stimming (short for self-stimulatory behaviour) is when someone repeats movements, sounds or actions to help release energy, regulate emotions, or focus.

1️⃣ Example: Same lyrics of a song all day, over and over again… until your colleagues know the chorus better than the artist.

👉🏻 It can be tapping your pen, spinning your ring, bouncing your leg

👉🏻 It can be doodling in a meeting, fiddling with Tupperware lids (basically the original fidget toy), or clicking a mouse over and over

👉🏻 For me it comes in bursts, and you might see similar things in people with autism like grabbing their hands or rocking back and forth

👉🏻 Sometimes in the workplace it’s also a way of unmasking

When you’ve spent years trying to hide behaviours that help you cope, finally letting them out can feel like freedom.

2️⃣ Example: It’s like releasing a button after a big meal

It’s a small way of saying: “This is me, this is how my brain works, and I don’t need to pretend otherwise.”

What you’ll find with neurodivergent colleagues, friends or family is that letting it out helps to prevent burnout and those big build ups of energy.

If anyone does it, just let people be.

I always do it when people don’t look… like last night when I pulled out the moonwalk.

ADHD Awareness Month Post #6

Relationships (blimey). Something that’s been a massive challenge for me all my life until I met Chloe.

ADHD and relationships or partnerships take a lot of time to truly understand on both sides. It can be really tough without that mutual understanding.

For me, I’ve always hit a three year mark and it’s ended. Maybe that’s because you can mask so well for a good period of time but eventually the same things crop up.

👉🏻 Leaving the washing in the machine (because your brain has already moved to the next side quest)

👉🏻 Going down various hyperfixations and neglecting your partner

👉🏻 Not being the best at “domestic adulting”

👉🏻 Boredom

👉🏻 Moving in within the first week because you think you’ve found your person

I’ve moved out and gone back to my parents six times (that’s a lot).

You blame yourself for being the problem and that hurts.

Each time you learn more, grow more and as you become a more “experienced ADHDer” you start to understand how to show up for your partner.

Just remember we love hard, we love fast but we would go to the world and back for the people we care about.

One thing that’s really helped me in this relationship is over communication about everything. I feel very lucky to have found someone special who is also neurodivergent.

Ever have those pinch me moments?

Well… guess who’s going to be a published author with one of the biggest publishers in the UK.

For the last few months, I’ve been seeing what my ADHD brain can come up with and like any ADHDer, I’ve gone down the “bigger, better, next idea” rabbit hole.

But this one’s different.

It’s called "My Special Brain", and it’s written for kids with ADHD the ones who feel misunderstood, told off for being “too much”, or like their brain just won’t stay still.

Schools and kids who are neurodivergent don’t always get enough support growing up, and I wanted to help change that.

The goal?

👉🏻 To help kids understand their ADHD in a positive way

👉🏻 To give parents and teachers language that makes sense

👉🏻 To make sure the next generation grows up feeling proud of how their brain works

The book will be aimed at 6–10 year olds, that magical age where curiosity is high, imagination runs wild, and confidence is still being learnt.

Because if we can help kids understand their ADHD, they’ll grow up knowing they’re not broken, their brain just works differently.

I want every child who picks up this book to feel seen, heard, and understood for exactly who they are.

Hopefully this will be rolled out to every school (I hope)

Cuddles with Mum to end the trip.

We’ve had our ups, downs, plenty of sitcom moments but nothing beats making memories.

Everyone talks about the more common traits within ADHD but sometimes it’s good to recognise the more quirky ones.

Hopefully you may feel "seen" with some of these.

These are the best ADHD moments the “wait, I thought that was just me” ones:

👉🏻 Telling people surprises then instantly regretting it (because the excitement literally can’t stay inside your body)

👉🏻 Walking like you’re dodging traffic cones shaping your body round bins, poles, even imaginary obstacles

👉🏻 Watching a film you’ve seen 20 times instead of starting the new one that’s been on your list for 6 months

👉🏻 Answering your own question before someone else even gets a chance (then apologising for interrupting)

👉🏻 Over-explaining simple things like you’re giving a TED Talk on why Weetabix goes soggy

👉🏻 Needing background noise to think but getting distracted by the background noise you chose

👉🏻 “Half hobbies” everywhere crochet kit, camera, sketchbook, guitar… all abandoned halfway but still very much in the rotation

👉🏻 The random memory pop-ups suddenly remembering something embarrassing from 2008 while brushing your teeth

👉🏻 Practising conversations in your head like you’re rehearsing a play even if it’s just ordering a coffee

👉🏻 "Have I turned my straighteners off" when you get to work to then realise you dont have any hair

You’re not truly ADHD unless you’ve collected at least one “life changing hobby” that now just collects dust.

👉🏻 Photographer… camera worth more than my life, still on auto mode

👉🏻 Guitar… swore I’d be the next Ed Sheeran, learnt two chords, retired (at least still ginger)

👉🏻 Gym membership… the only benefit I use is the towel service, and January looks like a Boots counter with all the “new me” vitamins

👉🏻 Running shoes… only mileage they’ve seen is the walk back from Tesco

👉🏻 LEGO set… still missing a leg, just like my motivation

👉🏻 Air fryer… convinced I’d be a chef, now it just reheats nuggets

Bonus points if you bought a fishing rod and have never even seen a fish 🎣

One thing I find really difficult in life is when people let me down, whether that’s professionally or personally.

If you’re lucky enough to be in a neurodivergent circle as a friend, we’ll go to the world and back for you. 

No hesitation.

What people often forget is that we feel things deeply. We carry a huge level of empathy, we trust fast, we listen hard, and we’ll always do what we can to help, especially in a crisis.

What you’ll usually find is:

👉🏻 We give thoughtful gifts
👉🏻 We overgesture
👉🏻 We really feel love

Being let down hits hard especially when it’s someone you really love. There’ve been moments in my life where I’ve had to cut people out, not because I stopped caring but because they kept letting me down.

The truth is, to grow, we sometimes have to let go. 

Even if it hurts.

Being an adult (ish) means protecting your peace and saving your good energy for good people.

Life’s way too short to keep getting let down.

P.S. Maybe I relate to animals more because even my pigeon impression shows up more reliably than some people

So I said: “Why don’t you just make up another story then?”

Next thing you know, they’re posting “How I overcame cyber-bullying in 3 easy steps” and pulling 200k views.

Moral of the story? If your reach is down, bring out the big guns… cue the camera tears and a perfectly timed “accidental” selfie.

ADHD Awareness Month Post #2

If you ever think about it, ADHD brains kids or adults are just very curious.

Unless you over explain everything, there will always be a few scratched heads, even at work.

If you’ve got kids who are super into something, you’ll probably hear:

👉🏻 Why? What does that do?

👉🏻 What happens if [insert topic] does that?

⏩️ Fast forward to Adulthood:

👉🏻 You dive down a rabbit hole, learn everything about [insert topic] and suddenly you’re the “master”, sharing it with everyone.

👉🏻 That thing becomes the new hyperfixation and you lose hours or money to it.

Bonus points if you become the persona. I’ve definitely copied a character before, used their words, and acted like them.

Even at work, asking questions is never a bad thing. What I meant to say in this video is that if we don’t understand, asking a few questions is not always enough. We sometimes feel like only a couple of questions should be enough. But if we need to keep asking to understand, then we need to do that.

But curiosity itself? That’s never a bad thing.

ADHD Awareness Month kicks off today 👋🏻

One thing we often forget is how differently ADHD can show up between men and women and that’s why so many cases (especially for women) get missed.

Just because you’re not flying round the room juggling Smarties doesn’t mean you don’t have ADHD.

Two types of ADHD (Hyperactive & Inattentive) and sometimes you can have both! 

Here are some common traits 👇🏻 :

♂️ Men with ADHD (not all) : 

👉🏻 Impulsivity and risk taking
👉🏻 Restlessness, fidgeting, can’t sit still
👉🏻 Struggle to focus in work or conversations
👉🏻 Forgetful, losing things constantly
👉🏻 Frustrated easily, quick tempered
👉🏻 Struggle to stick to routines
👉🏻 Always on the move
👉🏻 Emotional regulation challenges
👉🏻 Poor time management
👉🏻 Sometimes cope through addiction or substance use

♀️ Women with ADHD (not all) :

👉🏻 More inattentive (daydreaming, drifting off)
👉🏻 Internalise symptoms (anxiety, low self esteem)
👉🏻 Daily tasks feel like climbing Everest
👉🏻 Misunderstood as “scatterbrained” or “disorganised”
👉🏻 Juggling roles at work, home, life
👉🏻 Emotional sensitivity dialled up to 100
👉🏻 Masking symptoms (often not diagnosed until adulthood)
👉🏻 Time management chaos
👉🏻 Constant feeling of being overwhelmed or behind

A lot of people end up on anti-depressants because it feels like the “top up pill” for the anxiety and low mood but underneath it’s often the ADHD causing those ups and downs.

(That's why many people are put on these tablets but its actually the undiagnosed ADHD)

There’s nothing to be ashamed of. 

It’s about self acceptance, understanding yourself better, and learning how to work with your brain.

This is my word I use "Bonding" with the ADHD.

One thing I think we often take for granted, whether at work or in our personal lives, is the power of the small stuff. The moments where we feel grateful or actually practice gratitude.

Since coming back to Brighton, I’ve had more days where I’ve just taken a moment to breathe. To really notice the things and people I’m genuinely thankful for.

When you go through a phase of rebuilding, when you’re redesigning yourself from the ground up and figuring out who you really are, your whole mindset starts to change and it shows up in unexpected ways:

👉🏻 That colleague who checked in on you when they didn’t have to

👉🏻 That friend you haven’t seen in a while but still means the world

👉🏻 That family member who grounds you without even trying

👉🏻 That moment you put yourself in an uncomfortable situation, because deep down you know that’s where growth happens

👉🏻 That reminder that connection doesn’t always need a big reason or perfect timing

We all have moments in our life where we feel like "I wish I did that sooner".

Just because it's not a "big" win, sometimes the smallest things are the ones to be grateful for.

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realise they were the big things.”

Most of my life I was told I was heading down the wrong path and if I didn’t sort it out, I could have ended up somewhere very different. But an ADHD diagnosis saved my life.

We all have pasts, experiences, challenges and all of these shape who we are today and how we show up.

For the last six months, I’ve worked so hard to get back to county standard. Anyone who is neurodivergent knows what it’s like to hear:

👉🏻 You won’t do it
👉🏻 I don’t believe you
👉🏻 You’re past it
👉🏻 You’re kidding yourself

It fires up a different mindset, a drive to prove people wrong. I never want to settle for second. For me, it’s number one or nothing.

Last night gave me that opportunity. All the hard work, training four times a week, extra leg work on top of a full time job, podcasting and creating content finally paid off.

I was given the chance to be signed with one of the best teams in Sussex badminton for the first team.

This isn’t just a proud moment. 

📧 It’s a message, people can change, and with the right mindset we can get to where we want to be.

Here’s to being told “you’ll get nowhere in life” and proving it wrong.

Everyone deserves a chance when they work hard for it. 

Life is too short to live in the past.

If you work with a neurodivergent colleague or you manage someone, don’t get annoyed if we don’t get it the first time.

If you’re like me, I used to say “yes” when people explained something, pretending I knew what they were talking about… but honestly, I didn’t have a clue.

I promise you, there’s no point sitting there and (ugh, I hate this word) struggling without knowing what you’re actually doing.

👉🏻 Neurodivergent folk push back. You don’t look “weak” or “incompetent.” Sometimes it just takes a few goes.

👉🏻 Managers and colleagues please just give us a bit more time or explain it a couple more times. It helps.

👉🏻 Friends please don’t ever put “👍🏻”, we feel the pain and instantly think something is wrong. Calling us “Babe Ting” means you still like us.

Often it’s the simplest things that trip us up. But some people won’t speak up, they’ll nod, say they can do it, then panic in silence later.

We all learn at different speeds.

That’s totally okay.

💡 Bonus tip: If your colleague disappears after asking for help, don’t worry. They’re probably just overthinking the conversation while hiding in the toilet.

Is it just me that waves at the end of every work call?

Everyone else disappears instantly… and I’m left there ✋🏻 looking like I’m testing the office Wi-Fi signal.

Couple of seconds later I realise I’m basically doing a one-man pantomime while everyone else is already making a coffee.

Please say I’m not the only one doing the lonely Teams wave?

If you work with a neurodivergent colleague here’s the golden rule: “don’t assume you know what they need.”

Just because a plant on a desk helps one person doesn’t mean the rest of us want to start a mini rainforest at work.

We all learn differently. 

When it comes to “support” or “help” there’s no one size fits all box. (I’ve tried squeezing into a few and it doesn’t end well.)

Half the time we say yes to things we don’t even want just so we don’t feel silly saying no. Cue fake smiles while drowning in post it notes and someone else’s “productivity hack.”

Here’s the only question you actually need: “What’s something that could help you?”

Simple, human and it actually starts a conversation.

Not everyone will have an answer straight away (we’re not all Mystic Meg) but talking it through gets you closer.

For neurodivergent folk we do need to do this :

👉🏻 We’ve got to do our bit too. 
👉🏻 If something genuinely helps, say it and explain why.

Reverse mentoring is powerful but it’s tough when you don’t even know what you need yet. 

Been there, done that, bought the fidget spinner.

💡 Final thought: a plant, glasses and a hat won’t fix executive dysfunction… but they might win you Best Dressed at the office party.

If there’s one thing ADHDers are elite at (besides losing chargers and buying productivity planners we’ll never use)... it’s oversharing.

Like, Olympic-level oversharing.

We don’t just give “a bit too much info.” We give you our life story, our trauma arc, our breakfast order, and the name of our Year 5 PE teacher all before you’ve even asked how we are.

Examples include:

👉🏻 “Haha yeah, I once got fired because I was late 17 times in a week.” (said in a first-date silence)

👉🏻 “That reminds me of the time I cried in Tesco because they ran out of meal deals.” (during a team meeting)

👉🏻 “Oh, you’ve got a cat? I nearly adopted six once but my landlord said no.” (to the delivery driver)

👉🏻 “Anyway, my childhood abandonment issues aside.”

It’s not because we want attention, it’s because our filter and our brain’s excitement levels don’t talk to each other.

When we connect, we really connect and sometimes that connection sounds like a podcast you didn’t subscribe to.

👉🏻 Oversharing is our love language.
👉🏻 It’s how we show trust.
👉🏻 Yes… sometimes it gets us a polite smile and slow step backwards.

If you’ve ever left a conversation thinking “why did I say all that?”, you’re not alone your brain just hit ‘send all’ instead of ‘drafts’.

The tough one is coming away from a conversation thinking “Omg, did I just say that” and replaying it over and over again.

🎫 Golden tip: Self-awareness helps, but also remember who you can unmask and be yourself with because no one wants to walk away feeling like they’re "too much".

P.S. I once told my manager about my therapy before he even said "Good Morning"
