If you’re anything like me, growing up or even in adult life, you probably became “that friend.”

👉🏻 The joker
👉🏻 The one who keeps the night going
👉🏻 The one people invite because you’re the “fun one”

But also, the one who ends up being the butt of the joke.

The night out looks like this:

→ Cause chaos
→ Feel liked
→ Next day… anxiety and depression
→ Repeat.

It starts young too.

In school, you’re the kid everyone points to when the teacher leaves the room.

👉🏻 “Go on, you do it.”

Turning off the learning video, setting off a whoopee cushion, never malicious, just trying to fit in and be seen.

I’ve spent years being that person, the one that made everyone laugh, but inside, feeling completely lost.

The photo on the left was taken at 6:30am the morning after my birthday. My friends thought it was funny, but I remember how empty I felt inside back in 2014.

Fast forward to today, diagnosis, medication, awareness, and my life has completely changed.

That’s six and a half years now, and sometimes it’s still hard.

I’ve found purpose, stability, and self-acceptance. I’ve achieved things I never thought possible and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

I’m also hoping my book “My Special Brain” will help the next generation, a children’s book designed to help kids understand ADHD early, so they don’t grow up feeling like the “problem” or the “class clown.”

Any kid can fall into the wrong crowd just to fit in, even be part of groups that influence them to do things they don’t want to do, but feel they have to, just to belong.

In adult life, that can come with “high dopamine” choices too which is drink, drugs, gambling and crime (crime being the only one I was lucky enough to avoid).

Because with the right awareness, understanding, and support, kids can learn to shine without losing themselves.

If there’s one thing that’s a common theme with having ADHD, it’s the impulse spending on things that in the moment feel like a good purchase but it’s really just your brain hijacking itself for dopamine.

Most of my life, I haven’t been the best with money. The anxiety usually builds up near payday, and a week before you’re already looking at the next big thing to buy or investing in the latest phase you’re going through.

This can be tough because it can cause things like:

👉🏻 Debt
👉🏻 Neglecting bills
👉🏻 Using credit facilities (i.e. Klarna)
👉🏻 More packages than an Amazon driver

If you’re in a hyperfixation state with a new hobby, clothing, or object, you’ll probably buy all the best equipment.

When it arrives, it just collects dust like the 10,000 screenshots on your phone.

There are some simple things I do that help me resist the urge when I go down various rabbit holes:

1. Put it in the basket and come back 24 hours later, it soon wears off

2. Have an ADHD pot, a separate budget for the next “big thing”

3. Build self awareness and recognise when you’re doing it

Don’t ever fight the battle against ADHD, it’ll always find a way to get what it wants. Instead, try saying “okay, we’ll get it but let’s come back to it when the emotions and feelings aren’t heightened.”

Hopefully over time you’ll see fewer impulsive purchases and manage it slightly better so your home doesn’t start looking like an Amazon warehouse.

P.S. Never use credit facilities just to get the purchase fix.

That one tiny task you keep putting off for days weeks months.

You hype yourself up like it’s a life or death mission. Heart racing snacks ready playlist on.

Then you finally do it and it takes five minutes.

Actually no scratch that one button.

Cue instant tears followed by a full on dance break in celebration.

Moral of the story we’re not lazy we’re just dramatically efficient on our own schedule.

ADHD Awareness Month Post #15

There have been many times in my life within a workplace, new friendships, new relationships and people I meet for the first time where I automatically start mirroring.

If you ever wondered what that actually means it’s basically copying someone’s tone, language and vocabulary back at them.

Sounds bizarre right?

As ADHDers we can quickly adapt to any situation, any environment and try to establish a connection fast.

The main reason is:

1. Wanting to be liked by that person

2. Just to fit in

The challenge you have with this in a workplace is that:

👉🏻 You lose your own identity

👉🏻 You might agree with others just for the sake of it

👉🏻 You stop putting your own perspective across

You’ll find it with close friends, family or even colleagues at work where you may copy their sayings, come away with a different accent or pick up their mannerisms.

You play many roles with different groups without even thinking about it, but you never play the role of yourself.

In this video I give you two tips that have helped me become more “me”:

👉🏻 Micro pause (ask yourself, “is this me talking?”)

👉🏻 Wear something that’s you at work. It sounds small, but it’s a physical reminder that you don’t need to mirror anyone to fit in.

When you feel more like you, it’s easier to speak up with ideas, show your personality and lead with your own perspective, not someone else’s.

P.S. I used to go on holiday and pretend I was a local (trying to speak the native language). Let’s just say the more drinks involved, the more local I apparently became.

Finding a job is tough enough without people trying to scam you.

They’ll play on “desperation,” pull all sorts of tricks, and somehow always end with:

👉🏻 “Can you message my colleague on WhatsApp?”

Got this text today 👇🏻 :

> “Hey! Got a few minutes today? I wanted to bring up something brief.”

So naturally, I replied:

> “Hey, not today, I’m washing my hair hun 💅🏻”

Ten minutes later…

> “Okay, I’m Katie from AMG Search…”

I mean I don’t know who AMG Search is, but if you’re offering £50/hr to someone mid-shampoo, we might have to talk contracts.

P.S. So glad I got a reply and it wasn’t from a colleague, that could’ve gone south faster than my hair conditioner down the drain

ADHD Awareness Month Post #19

When I make new friendships, usually online through Linkedin, it gives me a rush of energy and this big hope that it might become a lifelong bond.

Most of the people I interact with daily are from here. You know who you are 💜

But it does come with a few ADHD style challenges :

👉🏻 The intensity of a new connection can feel like a hit of dopamine. I’m instantly thinking, “This is it! My new best friend! They get me!” Then a few weeks later… crickets.

👉🏻 Sometimes, those once “ride or die” friends just fade. Not because of any drama, just because something or someone new comes along and steals your focus. Classic.

It can be tough, but it’s a very real part of the ADHD experience.

Still, every new friendship teaches you something and when you do find those people who stick around, it’s honestly magic.

💡 Bonus tip: if I’ve voice noted you within 24 hours of connecting, just know you’ve passed the vibe check and I’ve already imagined us doing a podcast together.

ADHD Awareness Month Post #18

Every neurodivergent person is different, at work, outside of work, in how we think, feel and experience the world.

But there’s one thing most of us have in common, a collection of brilliantly weird and wonderful traits that make us, well, us.

One I forgot to mention in the video (and I’m still kicking myself for it):

👉🏻 Telling people the surprise before the surprise date

Honestly, I just get way too excited and end up spoiling it for myself before anyone else.

Here are a few more classics from the video and real life:

👉🏻 Doing random impressions halfway through a serious conversation

👉🏻 Talking to your pet like they’re your manager

👉🏻 Forgetting what you walked into a room for, but leaving with snacks anyway

👉🏻 Saying “I’ll just quickly tidy up” and accidentally redecorating the whole room

ADHD Awareness Month Post #17

If you’re neurodivergent, you’ll get this one straight away because you do it all your life and it's called "People pleasing".

Picture your energy like a jug of water. Every time you say “yes” when you really mean “no,” that jug slowly empties.

We do it because we don’t want to let people down.

We feel guilty or we just want to keep the peace. Friends, family, colleagues, whoever it is, saying no can feel impossible.

But really, remember this, saying “no” isn’t rude.
It’s actually a form of protecting your energy levels and saving your peace.

At work it might look like

👉🏻 Taking on extra projects when you’re already drowning

👉🏻 Saying yes to meetings you don’t need to be in

👉🏻 Offering to help others before you’ve finished your own stuff

Outside of work

→ Saying yes to plans when your brain is already fried

→ Agreeing to help when you need a night on the sofa

→ Feeling guilty for resting

What’s helped me

1. Practising saying “not tonight” or “I’ve got too much on” without a full explanation

2. Checking my energy before I commit to something

3. Realising that people don’t hate you for saying no, they actually respect you more for being honest

Protecting your energy isn’t selfish. It’s how you make sure there’s something left in the tank for the things and people that actually matter.

When you say “no” a bit more often, you start claiming a little piece of yourself back.

P.S. You can’t pour from an empty jug unless you fancy bursting into emotional flames halfway through the week

Everyone can feel confused about where to start with their own journey, what works, what doesn’t, am I neurodivergent, am I not? It can be tough not knowing where to even begin getting support.

This small guide I’ve written gives real life examples of how any of the following might show up at work or in everyday life.

This might not be what happens to everyone, but if even one part of it feels familiar, then it’s a start to understanding yourself better.

ADHD Awareness Month Post #22

If you’re neurodivergent, you’ll get this one straight away because sometimes the only way to make sense of what’s going on in your head is to write it down.

For me, journaling isn’t about having neat handwriting or writing every day.

It’s about taking the thoughts that bounce around your brain 24/7 and giving them somewhere else to live for a bit.

When you write down situations or feelings, especially the ones that make you spiral, it’s really good to start seeing them visually.

What you’ll find is:

👉🏻 You start to see patterns
👉🏻 You connect emotions to triggers
👉🏻 You realise what drains you
👉🏻 You notice what gives you energy

It doesn’t have to make sense at first, it’s just you, a pen, and honesty.

Sometimes it’s writing down how a day actually felt, not how you tell people it went.

The point is, you stop bottling it all up and start understanding yourself better.

Because when you get your emotions out of your head and onto paper, they stop feeling so heavy.
