Dove claims they’re “leading the fight against plastic waste”…

…in reality they’re dumping 12,000 highly polluting plastic sachets on low income communities EVERY SINGLE MINUTE 🤯

Yes, that means 6,307,200,000 sachets a year.

🔥 Fuelling an environmental disaster. 

What’s more is that this is just another example of why current marketplaces and platforms doing environmental checks aren’t cutting it.

Amazon claims Dove is worthy of The Climate Pledge Friendly badge on their marketplace. More greenwashing, more lies, more BS “ethical” consumerism.

The fact is though over 800,000,000 Climate Pledge Friendly products have been bought on Am*zon, showing people WANT to choose the better option.

It took me all of 45mins to receive an Islamophobic comment today… on Eid 🌙

Islamophobia is rife in the UK. 

In fact per person there were more Islamophobic social media posts in the UK than anywhere else in the world 🤦🏼‍♂️

And yet, it takes a special kind of person to be Islamophobic on our day of celebration.

Don’t be that guy.

Don’t be discriminatory.

Don’t be Islamophobic.

Ecocide is the word of the day.

📖 Ecocide: destruction of the natural environment by deliberate or negligent human action.

As a climate activist, human rights worker, and climate tech founder, I’ve been devastated by not just the human toll of Israel’s occupation and forced genocide, but also the shocking impact on the environment.

There are some hard hitting stats in the document below. Recommend reading through.

One of the most telling things I have seen is:

We all know it's been a tough year, and yet once again people are still prioritising ethical buying 🚀 

I cannot express how important these kinds of reports are. Interestingly, not only concerns over the environment are driving this change but also more awareness of the treatment of farmers in poorer countries has driven this growth too!

As ever, ethical shopping isn't just about being an environmentally sustainable company, it's about having an ethical supply chain too 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

The group behind the Fairtrade International mark – which is celebrating its 30th anniversary – expects to have earned more than £13m in income from the UK last year, slightly more than the £12.8m it earned in 2022 - The Guardian.

As ever the Fairtrade mark income is based upon the increase in sales, so as more products with Fairtrade labels sell, the more money Fairtrade makes 💰

Michael Gidney, CEO of The Fairtrade Foundation, said: “2023 was a very challenging time for the UK economy, with supply chain shortages following the pandemic, very high inflation and a cost of living crisis affecting us all.”

“In this climate, we are delighted that Fairtrade sales more than held their own, and while we are still finalising figures, we expect to see modest growth year on year. This is testament that, as happened in the financial crisis of 2008 to 2009, British shoppers do not trade down on their values when times are tough”.

As the founder of the only marketplace globally which verifies EVERY single ethical claim from the brands selling on Canopey, I couldn't be more excited to see the news that UK shoppers are sticking to their values 🌟

What's most interesting about this report is that overall retail sales have shrunk exponentially since inflation began to accelerate to the highest level since 1981 - driven by household energy bills and the price of food and drink soaring.

Canopey stops checking 

The people have spoken, plastic ain't fantastic.

Greenpeace surveyed over 19,000 people across 19 different countries to see whether there was consensus for the Global Plastics Treaty ✍🏻

Unsurprisingly, the answer is yes. 

❌ 75% of people supported a complete ban on single-use plastic ❌

I think what's important here is the continuing consumer pressure for a move towards more ethical material use, products, and product end-of-life services - not just recycling! ♻️

Here are some of the other top-level stats from the survey:

👇🏻 82% show strong support for cutting the product of plastic
🌳 80% want to protect biodiversity and the climate by cutting plastics
♾️ 90% of people supported a transition away from single-use plastic packaging to reusable and refillable packaging. 

It's also great to see people picking up on the health impacts of plastic. 

After it was found that microplastics had made their way into the human bloodstream, it doesn't surprise me that people are now concerned about this too.

❤️ 80% of people are concerned about the impacts of plastic on the health of their loved ones
👶🏼 84% of parents are concerned about these impacts on the health of their children.

The Global South naturally were most concerned about plastic pollution, which makes sense seeing as countries like the UK export much of their plastic waste to places like Indonesia where it's causing huge environmental issues.

People also understood the need for independent and uninfluenced negotiations. 

Specifically with 60% of people supporting the call for fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists to be banned from partaking in the discussions! 💪🏻

The question is whether this will have political implications. Will people vote with their wallets, and also vote with their ballot papers? Well with multiple general elections happening this year, time will tell!

But in the meantime... for those looking for alternatives to plastic here are my recommendations:

👋 60 Climate Thought Leaders to Know this Earth Day

Did you know the European Union's finance industry is undermining the EU's climate policies? Want to know how you can help? Read on...

Waking up this morning to see my old employers calling out the finance sector...again 🙄

It's no surprise that Greenpeace International have found once again that the financial sector is investing in projects which lead to biodiversity loss and deforestation.

It's undermining EU policy in the recent EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The problem? 

The EUDR, at present, does not regulate the finance sector 🤯

"According to a new research published together with Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth), Harvest, Global Witness and supported by 16 other NGOs, since 2015, European banks have lent almost €256 billion ($278 billion) to major corporations active in sectors like soy, palm oil and cattle, that put rainforests, savannahs and other climate critical natural ecosystems at risk." - Sigrid Deters

🦧 Back in 2015, we campaigned against Santander, bringing the orangutans to the city!

💪🏻  It took us 72 hours to get Santander to backtrack on their unsustainable palm oil investment thanks to the pressure of people moving their banking.

🐮 Another campaign I was involved in was the campaign against the factory farming industry and the deforestation being caused by JBS. 

And of course, it's no surprise to see the Greenpeace report highlight them specifically as a company receiving financing from the EU.

What's maddening is that the European Union is the second-largest global financial hub bankrolling these commodity sectors that are pushing precious and essential nature areas and critical forests past a point of no return.

Banking giants such as BNP Paribas, Santander (time to bring back the orangutans!), Deutsche Bank, Rabobank and ING, provided a staggering 22.1% of total global credit between 2016 and early 2023 to major corporate players in these sectors. Primary investment comes from France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain.

But in the UK it isn't much better, in 2022, it was found that Barclays has invested a whopping £6,700,000,000 into JBS - the world's biggest butcher 🔪 

So what can we do as individuals against these banking giants? 🧐

In the same way, it took 72 hours to force Santander to divest last time, we can all be part of that pressure this time around. Move your money, move your pension.

Now this is interesting! 🤨

Since more and more research is released around the health impacts of climate inaction, it’s become clearer that action can be taken on multiple fronts in the climate movement.

Today it’s been announced that the European Court of Human Rights has ruled in favour of a group of elderly women in Switzerland against climate inaction 👵🏻

This ruling looks at the health impacts of climate inaction, specificaly the delay in reducing emissions and therefore the impact on respiratory systems!

This is super cool because it means that not only can climate activists and lawyers take governments to court for environmental damages, but now they have another arrow in their quiver - health 😷

Whilst the world consistently funnels money into healthcare due to rising ages and costs, this could potentially mean that climate can take the limelight again.

I’m most curious to see whether VC funds that invest in health will now consider climate focused companies too since the climate crisis is intrinsically linked to negative impacts on health 🔥

Here’s the best piece of advice for consumer marketplace founders raising capital…

It’s 👏🏻 Not 👏🏻 Just 👏🏻 About 👏🏻 The 👏🏻 Founders 👏🏻

Please don’t get me wrong, you need to be fantastic. 

🤓 Deep sector expertise 
🔥 Passionate and invigorating
📖 Engaging storytelling
👶🏼 Believable and impassioning backstory

You need all these. And they matter deeply. Without them you won’t raise money.

But. And I cannot say this louder.

VC funds are highly unlikely to invest in your company at Preseed if you don’t also have:

🚀 Traction usually seen at Series A, ideally Series B.
💸 Higher than average revenue, and don’t get me started on GMV, you’re not making £120k a month at preseed?! Forget it.
🌍 Huge and achievable market size within 2 months. 
📍 Strong GTM and growth plan that no one has ever implemented before but will definitely work.
🛡️ Unrealistic defensibility - no one can copy you… EVER.
🔬 PMF pre launch, ideally pre product and pre customer interviews even. 

…and maybe even an Exit or 20 under your belt.

Obviously I’m joking, and yes I know it’s not April Fools. 

But there’s an ounce of truth in it. 

You can’t just be fantastic founders and expect to raise from T1 VC funds, unless you’ve got an exit or two under your belt.

Consumer marketplaces are tough. 

🐓🥚 Not the classic chicken and egg problem, and the increasing challenges of taking down the big boys as they expand further and further.

But the capital-traction chicken and egg problem.

In almost all situations you’ll need more impressive metrics than your standard Preseed company. 

In fact most VCs and investors will write posts saying: 

📣 “At preseed, it’s all about the founders” 📣

And yeah sure…unless they’re consumer marketplace founders. Then the founders matter but they want risk assurance too.

And to get that risk assurance? You need money to reach the metrics needed. 

But to get the money, you need the metrics 😵‍💫

My advice then?

Be amazing founders. Build your customer base. Ultimately it doesn’t matter what a VC says, it matters what your customers think.

Too many new "ethical" fashion companies still greenwashing 🤮

Using standard cotton, elastane, and non-certified materials but claiming it is ethical because it "looks good and lasts long" just isn't it 🤯

We as founders, investors, consumers, mentors, accelerators, and business partners must hold startup founders to account.

You can't just label something ethical to get investment, customers, and good reviews. 

To be honest, if you're working in fashion, you shouldn't even be making a brand that isn't using recycled or better materials at this point. 

That's sooo last decade 🙄

As a reminder, here are just some of the accreditations and the evidence required under the Canopey:

♻️ Recycled Materials - We will only show this accreditation if the product is made from 75% recycled materials (RPET)

🌱 Organic - This accreditation means the product has either the Soil Association Certification Forestry or the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

🌟 Fantastic to see the Greenhouse climate accelerator programme recognised in the top 70 Financial Times list of Startup hubs based on alumni feedback! 🌟

The list includes not one but two startup hubs from Imperial College London's ecosystem - congratulations to the Imperial Enterprise Lab, which features in the top 50 out of a pool of more than 2000 across Europe! 

Mentoring at The Greenhouse is particularly well-rated, with alumni feedback putting it in 14th place in Europe. 

Which of course means my bias as a mentor is also backed up with data 😉

"We run an in-depth coaching and business mentoring programme, which is one-to-one and individualised," says Head of The Greenhouse, Dr Jim Shaikh. "Our teams have access to as many as three mentors, all the way through their journey. 

"We’ve just started a programme where we match teams with Imperial researchers who can provide technical mentoring," he continues. "The Greenhouse was one of the first climate-focused accelerators, and we’ve had 10 years to perfect what we offer, so, we know exactly what we are doing and where we can add value.”

Canopey Community Impact 🌳

Imagine your company only raised 11% of the funding it needed?

It would be pretty hard to build the thing you needed right? 

Now imagine your company is the UNFCCC and that money was a low estimate of what was needed to tackle the climate challenges we were facing… 😅

That’s the situation we’re in now. 

The UNFCCC estimated it needed around €152m ($165m) in the 2024-2025 period to carry out an ever-growing number of activities that countries ask the climate body to be in charge of.

But, in Bonn last June, countries agreed only to a core budget of €74m ($80.4m) with compulsory contributions provided by governments based on their wealth.

The rest needed to be made up with voluntary donations… of which just 11% have been committed.

It’s a huge problem.

Not only this but the climate body is also struggling to collect millions of dollars in compulsory contributions that countries failed to fork out in previous years 😣

UNFCCC Cheif Simon Stiell has been ringing the alarm bells but countries just aren’t stepping up.

💬 “Our organization, the UNFCCC, now faces severe financial challenges,” he said. “We are attempting to meet an ever-growing mandate. Our job is to make your job easier. To carry out the tasks you have all agreed we should do, but we can only do this if we have the funding support.”

🔥 This why we need pressure groups
💵 This is why we need individuals to vote with their money
📉 This is why we need companies to divest from damaging activities. 

Only then will governments understand this is not a choice.
