With over 25 years of experience as a Wall Street equity research analyst and portfolio manager at esteemed institutions such as Goldman Sachs and Alliance Bernstein, Tiffany has established herself as a trusted figure in the industry. Houston, we have a problem.

My husband told me to go f .. figure it out.

I was in Houston. Three young kids. Money in the bank.
And I was paralyzed with anxiety about whether we'd have enough.

On paper, I had nothing to worry about.
But in my head, I was back in my childhood crappy Beverly Hills apartment, watching my mom do nothing about her financial future.

As I write this presentation, I keep coming back to that version of me in Houston and my fear of ending up like my mother.

I didn't know what I wanted.
I didn't know how to invest for the long term or in my future.
I was terrified of doing nothing like my mom.

When I was miserable and full of anxiety, I didn’t know what to do. 
Wondering if my husband had a clue.  
Instead, he yelled, "Go figure it out!" 

He was right. What he gave me was space and time.

Here's what I've learned since:

My anxiety wasn't really about money.
It was about direction or lack thereof.

I didn't have a plan. I didn't know what I was building toward.
So every market dip felt like a threat.

The shift came when I finally wrote down what I wanted.
On a piece of paper. Nothing fancy.

Slowly, my energy changed.
My decisions started pointing in the same direction.
It took years to build the life I have now.

But today? I don't have anxiety about money.

So here's what I'll tell those men in New Canaan:

If your wife seems anxious about money, don't just show her the portfolio.
Don't just explain the benchmarks.

Ask her what she's really afraid of.

Because her anxiety might not be about the stock market at all.
It might be about a childhood she's still trying not to repeat.

That was my story.
And I bet it's more common than any of us realizes.

I am Tiffany Kent, CFP ® who specializes in financial literacy and empowering women and anyone else going through a major life change — divorce, career change, job loss, empty nester, death of a spouse, etc. — to get more active and engaged in growing their wealth.

I’m a quant jock (Wall Street speak for number cruncher) with a Harvard MBA, a BA in Economics from UC Berkeley, and a disciplined and analytical mindset. I’m also a married mom with 3 kids and a dog named Holly, and I’m a hands-off mom when it comes to letting my kids learn and fail and grow as young humans, but when it comes to math, economics and investing I’m hands-on and try to turn everyday life into teachable moments.

After a midlife crisis and dread over the prospect of spending the rest of my life in Wall Street’s toxic masculine eat-what-you-kill culture, I had a lightbulb moment: I needed to think and act like the CEO of my own life, and embrace a growth mindset.

I went back to school and got my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER ™ credential and became a financial advisor, and spent an enormous amount of time reading books, learning new things and investing. Now I use my wisdom and experience to help others become the CEO of their lives, too. 

The secret to success is the power to serve others by being authentic and relatable as I help people improve their lives financially, professionally and personally. I show women, business owners and retirees that the ups and downs of the financial markets and real-life are normal and OK, and you can’t let that fear scare you away from making smart data-driven decisions. 

People often ask me about my career pivot after age 40 and how I knew what to do. The answer is that it took some soul searching and things were awful for a while, but I knew the right path forward when it occurred to me. I did the hard work because I wanted my kids to be proud of me and see their mom working toward something she believed in. My advice to clients is: invest in yourself and get comfortable with the amount of risk that’s right for you, and that will empower you to pursue your dreams and build your legacy.

I paid $0 for my financial education.
My biggest teacher was my mom's checkbook.

At 15, I was balancing her checkbook in our tiny Beverly Hills apartment.
Watching her fall for "buy now, pay later" schemes.
Seeing the stress she tried to hide.

She never sat me down and said, "Let me teach you about money."
But she taught me everything.

I learned that credit cards aren't free money.
I learned that pretending to be fine doesn't make the bills disappear.
I learned that financial independence wasn't optional—it was survival.

Here's what I wish more moms understood:

Your daughter is watching.
She sees how you react when bills come in.
She notices if you check prices or avoid them.
She absorbs your money stress—even when you don't say a word.

That's not a burden. That's an opportunity.

You don't need a finance degree to teach her.
You just need to be honest.

Let her see you budget.
Let her watch you make tradeoffs.
Let her ask questions—even the uncomfortable ones.

My mom's financial chaos scared me.
And that fear became fuel.

I understood early: if I wanted options, I had to create them myself.

The moms who raise financially confident daughters aren't perfect with money.
They're just willing to be real about it.

Because the most expensive lessons are often free.
And sometimes the best financial education happens at the kitchen table—
with a checkbook and the truth.
