NextAfter is a fundraising research lab and consultancy that works with cause-driven businesses and nonprofit organizations to help them better understand their customers and inspire their donors to give generously.  Over the past six years, we have documented over 1,045 online experiments spanning a total sample of over 222,872,564 individual touchpoints with organizations such as Boys Town, Compassion International, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Focus on the Family, National Breast Cancer Foundation, The Heritage Foundation, Hillsdale College, and many others.  The impact of these experiments has produced a cumulative net increase in response of 50,842.7% for our clients (as of 4/6/18).  The goal of our experimentation and research is to understand what makes people give so that we can unleash the most generous generation in the history of the world.

On December 31, 2010, KMA was acquired by The Pursuant Group.  Interesting experience being acquired.  It is very different than 'choosing' to work somewhere else, but it was a very meaningful experience and one that I have learned a great deal from.  During my time at Pursuant, I focused completely on two things: Innovation-- developing new solutions to fundraising challenges, and Optimization-- making the existing solutions work better.  

While I was there I developed a new model for Direct Response Television (DRTV) that is based on microstesting using small media buys and multiple creative strategies to optimize cost-per-acquisition of new donors.  I developed two ground breaking social gaming programs, one for Moody Bible Institute and one for Wycliffe Bible Translators that helped them each acquire tens of thousands of new names.  And, I had the opportunity to refine and test a theory I had developed for diagnosing and optimizing any online fundraising program-- The Flux Capacitor of Revenue Maximization (FCORM).  The FCORM suggests a simplified approach to maximizing online revenue by focusing on incremental improvement in the three key areas that equally impact revenue-- Traffic, Conversion, Average Gift Size.

KMA Direct Communications

When my wife was about 8 months pregnant with our third (notice a trend developing?), I was recruited and accepted a position at KMA Direct Communications in Dallas to start-up and lead the Digital Department.  What attracted me to this opportunity was that it would enable me to multiply my influence.  At Coral Ridge, I was able to serve one nonprofit organization, but at KMA I could serve 20 or more.  

When I arrived at KMA, I went right to it and quickly grew the team of two to one (the Director of Digital quit about 30 days after I got there-- perhaps he wasn't up to the challenge).  In two years, by God's grace, I was able grow the Digital Department to the largest and most profitable division of the company.  

During my time at KMA, I had the privilege of helping The Heritage Foundation grow their membership from 300,000 members to over 600,000 members, I pitched the former President of the United States of America, George W. Bush (and won the business) to do all of the digital fundraising work for the George W. Bush Presidential Center, and I helped launch the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview (and got to have an awesome  argument with Chuck on the phone about what it means to 'belong' to something as a member).  Most importantly, I had the privilege of being mentored by Tom McCabe, perhaps my favorite person in the world.  Tom taught me a theology of fundraising that has turned my life into one that is defined not by what I can get, but what I can give.  I love that man.

Coral Ridge Ministries

In late 2006, I felt the irresistible call of the Lord to begin applying the gifts he entrusted to me to the service of His Kingdom.  Looking back, it was a pretty radical move to sell my business, my house, leave Pittsburgh (a place that I had never thought I'd leave) and go to South Florida and work for a nonprofit ministry.  Oh, and I should mention that at the time we had a 17-month old baby boy and my wife was 8 months pregnant with our second.  But that's exactly what we did.  And it was interesting timing.  The day I accepted the job, Dr. Kennedy, the man who founded and ran the ministry for 35 years had a heart attack.  Now, I'm almost positive I had nothing to do with that, but it made for a very frantic (and exciting) time at the ministry.  Because the founder was now gone, we had to develop a way to do ministry 2.0.  

All of the skills that I learned as a young entrepreneur came to bear at Coral Ridge.  I worked directly with the new CEO, Brian Fisher, to develop a strategic 5-year plan for the ministry.  In the first 6 months after arriving, I led an effort to redesign the CoralRidge.org web site which won an award that year for Best Ministry Web Site from the National Religious Broadcasters Association.  I also led the efforts in developing many firsts: Learn2Discern, a daily 90-second Internet video broadcast that took the issues of the day and provided a Biblical perspective; 10 Truths About Series, a series of books, videos, and other online resources that provided 10 indisputable truths about issues of our time; and perhaps most noteworthy, a pilot project for an idea I had to use the power of search engine marketing to save babies.  This pilot project was the genesis for what would eventually become Online for Life.
