Companies whose sales cycle takes two quarters expect marketing to bring audiences from unaware to interested inside of one. 

That speaks volumes about how little marketing is understood and respected.

The timeline for developing brand awareness to the point of being in the consideration set or reaching salience is likely a full order of magnitude greater than the length of the sales cycle. 

Similarly, most sales qualification methodologies take a fairly binary view of whether this pain point is a funded initiative or being actively addressed, yet marketing is supposed to create need and budget for a solution inside of 6 nurture emails. 

Somehow, marketing is expected to create interest faster than sales can build champions, and all while doing it via lead gen and email marketing only. 

For a lot of marketing teams it’s not doing more with less - it’s performing magic and miracles. 

You simply can’t build awareness through a form fill and a pdf. There’s no lucky brand marketing byproduct that comes from a conversion effort. 

Brand awareness takes time and takes considered effort, but it works.

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

Last year’s marketing creates this year’s customers.

This may be the stupidest thing I have ever read on the internet. 

And sadly it is a tweet with over 6,500 likes and 15,000 bookmarks.

So what did it say? 

"Charles Bukowski's work will change your life forever. His work takes 100s of hours to read. I've gone through it so you don't have to." 

Then it was a twitter thread on 11 learnings from his writings to "upgrade your mind" 
 
Everyone is so hellbent on shortcutting their learnings that they don't seem to realize that the experience is what matters. 

Reading Bukowski could change your life. 

Reading a likely AI generated twitter thread on his writing surely will not. 

You weren't immersed in the stories, the characters, the way he talks about work and drinking. The nuance of his writing. You didn't get the full experience. 

The same goes with marketing. The best way to learn how to scale your SEO, build an ABM program, launch a podcast or anything isn't by reading someone's playbook.  

It's by actually doing the damn thing.

The actual real experience in anything is what matters.

Who has a hard time focusing on your accomplishments? I know I do. I mean, I'm not supposed to talk about myself, right?

I am wayyyyyy better and helping you promote your accomplishments! 

I have been having a bit of a crisis lately and felt like I've been a fog. Then I decided to do a little exercise today. I'm not quite sure where I got the idea from. 

Maybe it was when my friend Dwight Clough said that some people need to write their memoir not as a book to publish, but as something to get out. 

Trust me, I didn't write a memoir, but I did focus on some things that I have accomplished in the past decade. Honestly, it felt good to see those things. It reminded me of the things I did. 

It reminded me that maybe I ain't so bad after all. It gave me a boost of confidence.

Internal(inhouse) vs. external subject matter experts. How do you know which to choose for your content?


I've found that for every piece of content, it's better to figure out beforehand if you need internal or external SME contributions (or both).


For those that might not know what I mean:

🔹️Internal SMEs are experts within your company/your client's company. E.g. sales or product team members or c-suite execs.

🔹️External SMEs are industry experts outside your company/your client's company. Think industry influencers, customers, partners, etc.


So how do you determine who to use for your content?

Here's what I'd consider:

1️⃣ Content goal

If your goal is to challenge industry norms or highlight unique company perspectives, lean on internal SMEs. They're more aligned with your company's messaging and vision.

But if your goal is to share industry-wide perspectives while establishing your company as the industry authority, use a blend of internal and external SMEs.


2️⃣ The type of content

Different content types need different SMEs.

For a product-led piece, you'll be better off using an internal SME that has a deep understanding of the company's product or service.

And for an industry report, you'll be better off using multiple external SMEs to get their different perspectives.


Finding the right balance between internal and external SMEs ensures your content benefits your audience while meeting your goal for creating it.

Think about it. 

You wanna know who these people are. That's why an About Page is so important. 

It helps with greater credibility (important in the age of AI, right?), brand awareness, and helps your company be more personable.

We had a solar eclipse today! So, I hung out with my mom and her friends to watch. Someone had to chaperone. 

Value and Quality. 

These are the two things I see people say you need to do to navigate the ole algo-gods. But... no one defines what they are.

Ask 100 people and get 100 answers. 

"Just add value" to your posts. Create content that is quality or epic. You know, those platitudes about content we are using.

I think you have to know what is "value" and what is "quality" to know if you are even hitting the mark.

And guess what? You are gonna need more than that in this overcrowded, content shocked, over saturated, digital marketing world. 

You will need to be REMARKABLE. 

My friend Steve Roller calls it BlackBox content. I call it signature content.
What in the world is signature content?

It is the content you create that identifies uniquely as yours, stands above the average content, often created by you first, and is the thing you are known most for. Signature content can be a real differentiator and help your company stand above your competitors.

What is the ROI for that? Do you hear that question a lot? 

I admit, I am not the go-to for something like this, especially in marketing, but it is almost always what people want to know.

Often, branding and marketing takes time. I've even been asked about ROI for About Pages! Heck, I don't know! 

But I'm thinking closer about it now.
