Exactly 8 years ago today life threw my wife and I a curveball.  She was 19 weeks pregnant with our 3rd son and her water broke.

It is one of those dates seared into your mind as you know exactly where you were at and what you were doing.

As I reflect on our journey and what we went through the last several years, it often felt like a like a roller coaster ride except you didn't know when it would stop if ever.

Fast forward our 3rd son is now finishing up first grade and healthy.  He was not suppose to be here according to the medical statistics.  

But God had other plans.

There is not a day goes by that I don't think about this day and how it changed my outlook on life.  Often times when I share this story to people they often ask how did you survive during that time.

The short answer is you just find a way.  

But after constant reflection on the experience there are a few others.

1.  Have faith.  Things happen for reason even if you can't see it at that moment.  There is a reason you can't understand in that moment but in time you will.

2.  You are not in control.  Even if you think you are, you are really not.  His time, not yours. 

3.  You have a choice every morning.  You can feel sorry for yourself and ask why me or you can go and make the most of the day by giving and serving.

4.  At the end of the day besides faith, the two most important things are health and family.  That is really all that matters.  Without those life can be very hollow.

What ever season you are going through that is impacting your job, family, health, etc.  Know this, they don't make a manual for those experiences.  It can be scary and worrisome.  It is normal to feel this way.

We all go through our own journey.  So when you feel you are on a roller coaster and don't know when it ends.  Hold on it will eventually come to a full stop.  But while you’re on it remember two words.

Have. Faith.

My 12 year old umped his first little league game. 

Talk about pressure. 

Dealing with coaches 
Dealing with 6-8 year olds
Parents watching closely 
Trying to make sure the call is right 
Nerves and causing you to be timid 

The feeling to be comfortable being uncomfortable. He was in that zone when the game started. 

But you know what, this is what he learned as the game went on. 

1.  Being vocal and confident on calls 
2. Thinking and making quick decisions 
3.  Interacting with adults in a
     competitive situation 
4.  Being in the correct position 
5.  Areas which to get better

I could see his confidence growing and him settle into the game. 

He held his own. After the game he got in the truck and on the way home he said, Dad I can’t wait until my next game assignment. I can do this. 

Confidence is a gamechanger.  Mix that in with a good work ethic.  Endless opportunities are there for the taking. 

Especially if they put a little change in your pocket.

We have all been there.  Customer says they will sign the deal.  They have the paperwork.  But you can't get them to actually put the ink on the paper.  

You try calling, texting, emailing, "stopping by since you are in the area", all the tricks.  Nothing seems to work.  It's seems to be only on their time.  Which is fine.

I was working directly with a CFO on a 7 figure deal.  We had gone through the process, collaborated on the ROI which would payback in 1.2 years over a 7 year period.  He was the final signature and the paperwork was on his desk.

Then crickets.  I couldn't for the life of me get him to respond to sign and send back over for booking. I had managers asking where is the deal at etc.  

Then I remembered he was a Ohio State fan.  Had all kinds of memorabilia throughout his office.  So I sent him a few clips of OSU football highlights from YouTube.  My message was "hope you are as fired up for football and the project to start as I am".  And emailed it off and went to lunch.

An hour later I checked my email and had a signed contract in my inbox with a note saying.  I am fired up for the season to start as well and to start the project. Appreciate sending the clips, they were a great reminder to get this contract done.

I learned through that experience people are so used to seeing fastballs in a process.  Sometimes they need a change up to help them refocus.

Been thinking about the FTC banning non-competes.  I totally dig it.  Early in my career I had a company come after me in violation of a non-compete I signed.  

I had followed a manager to another company that "kinda competed" against my former company.  

Somehow the company found out and sent a non-compete violation letter to my new employer and to me.

There was a lot of back and forth over the next few weeks.
-My old company was trying to flex and make threats
-My new company was irritated at the flexing of the old company
-I had to hire an attorney and had an unexpected cost
-The CEO at my new company nicknamed me (in fun) her problem child 

But in the end between myself and my attorney and the new company we found a loop hole that made the non-compete toothless and the old company look even more foolish as they showed their true colors.

So I along with many others over the years impacted by the non-compete paper tiger....  Glad to finally see they aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

My dad celebrated his 72nd birthday recently 

I was great to get out the suburbs and get back to the country and farm.
It's always amazing how the stress levels drop when I get past the city limits.

I can feel the stress fall away.

I got back to my roots.
The place where my core values and beliefs were formed and instilled
Feeling the nuisances the country roads that lead me home
Seeing old and new homesteads and watching the cattle graze
Chance to re-center myself 

The older I get the more I miss it.  Maybe I should change that.
I have had the chance to travel all over and experience many things
But where I grew up, nothing can top those experiences

Spring is in full swing.  Drive out to the countryside for a day.
Feel the stress melt away.  Trust me it will
Take it in.  Your eyes and mind will open

New experiences will begin

Sunday inspiration 

I went for a run this earlier this week

But here is the thing 

I didn’t want to go. I laid in bed trying to find every excuse not to go

After all I had ran six days in a row so taking a day off wouldn’t hurt 

My inner voice finally convinced me to get up and go 

As I begrudgingly stretched and headed out the door 

I started my run and a mile in I  looked down and saw a dollar. 

Wow my lucky day. I picked it up

Kept running found and found two more dollars. 

I finished my run feeling better and my pockets a bit fuller 

Moral of the story is sometimes an unexpected outcome of riches happen when we force ourselves to do something we didn’t want to do.

Sales leaders your culture is more like a school playground than you think 

-Fire drills, 
-Unnecessary multiple meetings about info that can be found in your CRM, 
-Duplicate report request all saying something but really saying nothing
-Unneeded internal hurdles 
-The list can go on

This is the sales reps version of the merry go round.  

The faster it goes the worse you feel. You are not sure how to get off the ride. And when you do you don’t want to go on another one and want leave the playground 

But sales leaders when you empower your reps. Give them an environment and space to thrive. 

Don’t bog them down with useless mundane tasks. 

Let them lead to close deals but acknowledge that your there for support in case they need an extra hand. 

Welcome to the swings.  It sits there waiting for someone to take it as high as they can. Sure they might need a little nudge in the beginning

But by letting the rep create their own momentum through hard work. That builds and takes them higher. 

Sales leaders. Add more swings and remove the merry go rounds.

Simple Sales Tip:

Sometimes you need to feel the sting of a loss

In order to grow and get better

Allowing participation trophies in youth sports is a big disservice to the kids

You are basically saying you lost but its ok you still get rewarded.

It dilutes down a life lesson that could be taught and that is by feeling that burn of a loss

Let it fuel the fire to work harder
To get better in order to compete again 

Sales is no different it is a zero sum game

There are no participation trophies or entitlements

Somebody wins and somebody loses

One person gets a commission 
One person gets $0 commission

If you’re in sales, you have experienced both

Next time you lose, let it sink in and feel the sting

You will be better off in the long run.

Had a great conversation recently with a golf pro talking about golf course etiquette.  

He said you can't predict the outcome of a golf match or how a shot ends up, but you control the etiquette that is displayed on the course.

There is a powerful truth in that statement.

Sometimes you can't control things from happening.  But what you can do is stay on top of your personal etiquette, no matter what happens.
