The CFO role has expanded beyond financial duties to take on strategic responsibilities across the company, focusing on forming new partnerships, evaluating technology or working to meet revenue goals alongside the CEO, according to a Brainyard survey of finance leaders across 21 different industries. All this, as well as maintaining cash flow; owning processes; ensuring reporting accuracy; and dealing with investors, auditors and tax authorities, means CFOs log some of the longest working hours. This is expected to continue, as research by the Institute of Management Accountants shows that 72% of members surveyed believe the CFO role will continue to expand in scope through to 2025. The challenge for CFOs comes when they don’t have the visibility to instantly know how business is performing and make decisions easily, due to siloed data and limited reporting capabilities. Manual processes are prone to errors and slowing their team down, meaning cash flow takes a hit when invoices get missed, unpaid and written off. Ensuring compliance without a reliable way to track new regulations makes it impossible to expand internationally whilst mitigating risk. Ultimately, it becomes much harder for CFOs in scaling companies to bridge the gap between their financial duties and strategic priorities to ensure sustainable growth, without the right system in place.
