At UW I’ve been responsible for growing a new team, including budgeting, recruitment and onboarding of new team members, as well as managing their probation period. As part of this, it was key to establish and foster a strong team culture and identity; for this I leaned on the expertise and strengths of new hires to ensure that ways of working and different perspectives were explored and considered, as well as forming strong relationships with—and seeking guidance from—my managerial peers.

This role included being an agile lead within the team: understanding agile working practices deeply, ensuring that the delivery cadence of the team is observable, measured and sustainable, and that capacity and utilisation of the team remained consistent – including balancing the priorities of technical debt vs feature releases. I was also responsible for facilitating agile ceremonies, such as sprint planning, the daily sync, and sprint retrospectives.

This role included direct managerial responsibilities for a number of engineers. This involved monitoring and promoting team health, as well as regular 1:1s where we focused on exploring areas for learning and identifying additional opportunities for growth. I was also responsible for driving process improvement within the team, to improve efficiency and impact and engineer happiness. This included codifying standards and expectations of work quality, and ensuring that these standards were met.

Lead Software Engineer

Working as part of a long-running Games Catalogue project, I contributed heavily to the functionality of our GraphQL services. This included implementing middleware-like resolvers and code generation to massively reduce the amount of manual code that was written, resulting in fewer bugs and a faster feature release cycle.

I also collaborated closely with the lead software engineer as well as software architects and stakeholders to design and implement a serverless service to sync records and deltas to Kafka, using AWS products such as Kinesis, Lambdas, Step Functions and DynamoDB.

Senior Go Software Engineer

Spearheaded the architectural design and implementation of an event-driven customer deduplication service using Kafka Connect and Kafka Streams.

Led the effort of ensuring that our OAuth 2 refresh token implementation was to-spec and accounted for edge cases and malicious usage. This included regular conversations with stakeholders and software architects to ensure that the solutions presented were acceptable.

I worked in two teams during my time as a Software Engineer.

1. Customer Onboarding and Registration, Core Tribe

Contributed heavily to the design and implementation of a serverless implementation of a ID&V document upload journey. Making heavy use of AWS technologies, namely: Lambdas and Step Functions, KMS, S3 and Rekognition.
