Its also where Bitcoin gets its roots. While everyone talks about Bitcoin's 2009 emergence, few understand the 20+ years of innovation that made it possible. In 1989, cryptographer David Chaum launched DigiCash—the first attempt at anonymous digital money using cryptographic protocols. Though it ultimately failed commercially, it planted the seed for what was to come. The true intellectual breeding ground? The 1990s Cypherpunk movement—a collective of privacy advocates, programmers, and cryptographers who believed code could be weaponized against centralized authority. Their encrypted mailing list became the laboratory where cryptocurrency concepts were first debated and refined.
