When I left my last job to take on my first head of marketing role, I told everyone: You’ll be hearing from me again! I’ll have lots of questions and will be phoning a friend. 📞 

6 weeks in, I sure have. Some questions I’ve asked former colleagues, peers, and mentors:

What’s your split btwn field and digital?
How do you get the most out of tradeshows?
What’s your cost per opportunity for tradeshows?
Can you send me that file we worked on together?
Can you talk to one of my team members?
Is this an analyst I should pay attention to?
What should I think about when evaluating a new visual identity?
How much does X vendor cost and would you recommend them?
Have you evaluated X vendor? 
Are you looking for conract work? 🤣 
Do you have referrals for X contractor?

As a first time anything, you’ve got to phone a friend. 🤗 

But prob as a 2x, 3x, 4x… too.

Build your network!
Pay more attention to what x-functional leaders are doing.
Ask lots of questions to lots of people.
Embrace a beginner’s mind. 🤓

Pay yourself first.

That was something a great manager once told me.

What he meant was: Everyday, start your day by investing in yourself. 

Don't let the first thing you do be responding to an email or catching up on Slack.

Maybe it's writing. Or reading. Or blogging. Or publishing on LinkedIn. 🤓

Maybe it's just having breakfast with your family 😍 

Today, I almost skipped a swim bc I was thinking about everything I had to do this week.

But then I remembered to pay myself first. 

🏊‍♀️  So I went for the swim, and now I feel great about the rest of the day! 

Some jobs I’ve had that you DON’T see on my LinkedIn profile:

👶 Babysitter for a surprise birthday party organized by husband for wife’s 40th.

👆 Helper in front of broken elevator. My job was to tell people to take the stairs.

📞 Receptionist for a company named Moai. I’d answer the phone: “Hi, this is Moai.” And ppl would say “Hi Moai.”

☕ Barista at a cafe on campus at UC Berkeley. Quit after one day. Too stressful for me.

👠 Retail associate at Macy’s in SF on the I.N.C. floor

🛍 “Merchandise hostess” at Disneyland, i.e. worked in retail shops in Disney West which included New Orleans Square, Adventureland, and Frontierland. Got paid minimum wage: $4.25 an hour.

🇻🇳 Managed a team of 20 Vietnamese staff who uploaded photos and product details onto product detail pages for furniture (Funny question from one of my staff: Why do Americans have so many types of tables? My answer: Because we need a lot of surface area to put all our stuff on.)

There’s a LinkedIn lesson in here somewhere, but I’m just sharing bc that elevator job popped into my head the other night and I thought it was hilarious.

I've been in too many internal sales calls where I thought later: Shit. 

I didn't get my point across.
I got too in the weeds. 
I'm not sure they cared. 

Thought about this last night and thought there's an easy solution to this: 

Always say one of these when you're presenting to sales:

Sellers, this will help you with outbound prospecting. 

This will help get in front of your accounts.

This will help you re-engage an account. 

This will help you get the next meeting.

This will help you differentiate. 

This will help you answer that objection. 

This will help you multi thread.

So simple! Tell em what you're gonna tell em, tell em why it matters to them, then tell em.

Here is a hill I will die on:

Use sentence case over Title Case for all titles and subtitles. 

Unless You Are Writing a Book. 📙 

That includes website headlines and subheads, ebook titles and chapter titles, blog post titles and section heads, slide titles, etc.

Who out there is still using title case? Honest question!

I know Forrester and Gartner do.
