Why Testing The Wrong Metrics Destroy Your ROAS

Feel Like Your Meta Ads are giving You Bot Traffic?

WARNING for Meta Advertisers: Some of my Meta ad accounts have seen spikes of bot traffic or unusual behavior in performance.

If you’ve seen this to be true in your ad account, here is what to look for as signs of bot traffic and what to troubleshoot to get your ad account back on track.

1- Sudden massive drop in CPMs

If you look at your campaign, adset, or ad level and see a sudden massive drop in CPMs, this is tail sign that you’re getting bot traffic.

For example, one of my accounts averaged $130 CPMs, and all of a sudden dropped to $11 CPMs on multiple adsets.

This can lead to a ton of bot clicks for super low CPC, or cost per click may seem normal, but CTR drops a ton.

THE FIX:

- Duplicate the campaign and ad sets to republish.

If that doesn’t fix it, don’t use the existing post ID and publish as a new ad.
If that still doesn’t fix it, move on to step two below.

2- Overnight massive decrease in CPC and spike CTR

It’s always great to see a 10%+ CTR on a conversion campaign, but in the many years I’ve run ads, it has been a hard KPI to reach unless you’re getting hit with bot traffic.

If you look at ‘placements’ for breakdowns, it’s most likely tied to ‘audience network’. More than 80% of the time, I’ve seen Audience Network bring in crappy traffic…but I’ve also seen cases in reels as well, surprisingly (not as common).

THE FIX:

Don’t do ‘all placements’ and republish or duplicate and exclude audience network (or wherever you see the bot traffic behavior coming from)

3- Specific creative tied to bot traffic

I truly don’t know why this is, but I’ve noticed certain creatives will produce bot traffic of behavior up above.
Even after publishing as a new ad, it still brings in bot traffic.

THE FIX:

I’ve had to just kill the creative and move on to the next variation of it.

4- Wait it out

Here’s the most recent one I saw over Black Friday weekend.

Certain ad accounts randomly got hit with super low CPMs, but even worse I had other ad accounts get full on form fills on a landing page and booking calls that were clearly bot traffic from one person. Like 15-16 new leads all booking calls with fake names and emails on an 8-step application.

THE FIX:

I’m not sure how that happened, though it only lasted a weekend before fixing itself. But my guess is it was AI bots instead of normal bot behavior.

Usually, they don’t get past becoming a lead, but going all the way to booking calls is wild on an 8-step application.

Be sure to implement tools like Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity in your funnels so you can see their behavior in real time.

Here’s 3 things we did to increase lead quality:

1. Increase Friction 
Add more friction to your optin form

2. Ad Messaging
Make sure your ad copy + landing page copy is specific and calls out who your ideal prospect is

3. Higher Intent Targeting
Even with andromeda updates, some of my best audiences are lookalikes especially with customer high value lists (or using 3rd party integrated lists like on Primer)

He was also able to hit #1 best seller in two categories on Amazon.

And 70% of attendees were new leads generated from meta ads.

Here’s what we did:

1- Classic free webinar funnel for the book launch, very specific for estate planning lawyers

(It’s funny when we made it general to try and hit lawyers in general, CPL almost doubled its cost - be specific!)

2- Wrote, created, and tested 50 ad creatives with 4 messaging variations each (total of 200 ads) within 2 2-week periods on a brand new ad account and pixel

3- Self liquidated 0.42x ROAS before the webinar from spend with bump offers/VIPs/etc.

4- 2-week nurture sequence leading up to the event

5- Client absolutely crushed the presentation with urgency/scarcity/digging into pains/made it exclusive

6- After the webinar, he actually brought in another $20k in sales from follow-up, so now he’s at $120k in sales

Launches definitely aren’t always this way (I wish they were).

But Andrew and I had all our processes dialed in 🙂

What makes a good launch for you?

There’s 3 types of promotions you can do to prepare your holiday sales for your offer(s). And there’s pros and cons to each.

1. Discount the price of offer during promotional period.

This is the most common/obvious one that most people think of when they think of a promotion.

If you’re coming out of Black Friday, you probably did this one and crushed it if you did it correctly.

Pros: 
- This one is easy to implement and execute on, just lower the price and show the savings to the prospect

- You’ll get the bottom of funnel prospects who’ve been on the fence for a while seeing your ads / reading your emails.

Cons: 
- This can backfire after the promotion or discount ends, of sales really dropping off

2. Increase the price of your offer after promotional period.

This is an effective way I’ll implement to my offers when I’m hoping to increase my prices long term, and at the same time add lots of urgency/scarcity to it in the short term.

And every smart business should increase their rates and product prices each year(s) to keep up with inflation.

Pros:
- You get more bang for your buck and should increase AOV

- This can help offset inflation and other rising costs in the market

- You can squeeze in more people who’ve been on the fence for a while by instilling fear of missing out on this offer before price increases

Cons: 
- Let’s say you increase your prices at the new year, you can see a dip in sales the following year until people get used to the new price again (aka can backfire)

- Need to prepare on increased fulfillment of product or services (if you are in the service industry, this can be stressful to get an influx without hiring and training more, but then compensating for less sales the following month unless you really figure out the new price)

3. Add more value to your current offer at the same price

This can be great if you don’t want to discount prices, but also don’t want the effects of increasing prices long term. 

This can be smoother transition if so but sometimes might not bring in as many sales as the discounted price that gives excitement or raising prices that gives fear for the prospect.

Pros:
- If you come out with an extra goodie or bonus, a good transition to add as a bonus to the offer and test the market.

- Least amount of risk of less buyers the following year/months after the promotional period

Cons:
- Might not get the influx of sales you were hoping compared to a price decrease or price increase

- Really need to make the added value or bonuses really desirable and complimentary to what you’re selling so it sells well (will take testing and strategy to figure this out)
