Don't use LinkedIn as your primary content platform warns top marketing blogger and best-selling author Mark Schaefer.

No, no, no, he writes. "It’s time to stop the insanity."

In this article ('Why you need to ditch LinkedIn as your content platform'), Mark urges business owners and leaders to get back to basics. 

Owned media is where it's at folks. That is, those content channels that you own and control. For example, a blog, or podcast.

The whole don't build your online presence on 'rented land' (i.e. social channels') is - and always has been - sound advice. But there's a new twist to it now: AI.

Mark says: AI and LinkedIn do not play well together, 

Mark tells the story of his friend Karine Abbou - PhD who, he says, is is studying the impact of AI on search more closely than anyone I know. And she recently made a shocking observation.

He writes: "When she (Karine) queried AI bots about the top thought leaders in AI and search, none of the familiar experts posting through newsletters and LinkedIn showed up. In fact, all of the information provided by AI bots was absorbed from bloggers she had never heard of (but she is following them now!)."

Karine's suggestion, Mark says, is to start a blog right away! At least for now, blogs on websites are driving the content on AI, not LinkedIn posts. This is the future of search!

Jack's story is a good one, and his heart is definitely in the right place! 

Granted, Jack's presentation is weighted towards independent content creators, but as I am want to say, these are the people who are largely operating at the cutting edge of content  production and audience building today.

*** Here's the kicker *** Indie creators (some might call them 'influencers', but that would be selling them short - they're really micro-media entrepreneurs) are the ones that we, as business people who create content, should be keeping an eye on, as well as the creator economy trends more broadly.

The temptation is to worry about what others in our space are doing, but unfortunately, this leads to narrow-minded thinking and 'me-tooism'. Indeed, who's to say our competitors are actually doing a good job anyway? In all likelihood, they're well behind the pack and are just 'ticking boxes'.

As business owners, we don't need to be *ahead* of the curve, but knowing which way the curve is heading will definitely open up plenty of opportunities to increase recognition and marketplace respect for our brand and our business, not to mention deepen the connection we have with our audience.

Put another way, seeing the 'big picture' is *always* a good idea, and watching this presentation from Jack will certainly help in this regard.

I think it will sit perfectly with those business owners who don’t want to tackle anything too onerous straight away, but still want to start with a small but manageable content project.

Sub-channels & pre-owned media: A new way to think about your journey up the content creation ladder

Are you busy writing that (non-fiction) book 📘 and are keen to launch it in a blaze of glory once it's finished? Great stuff, hats off to you sir/madam!  BUT ... 

... don't wait until you actually publish the book to you start promoting it in earnest. The book promotional process starts around the same time that you begin writing it! 

This is a two-fold strategy: 

(a) Seeding your ideas out in the public arena via blogging, YouTube videos or social media posts - even giving talks: this is a great way to generate conversation for your concepts and ideas, and for you to see what's resonating with people (and what's not). Plus ... 

(b) It's also a great way to attract the *right* people into your world - your personal brand orbit, as it were. If they like what you're writing and talking about on and offline, then maybe they might be interested in your book when it comes out.

The trick, of course, is to try and get those interested people to subscribe to your email list - what extra value can you provide them with as an incentive to do so? This way you can continue the conversation and start building connection with an audience of like-minds in advance of launch day.

OR maybe, get people to subscribe to a podcast that closely aligns with the themes you're writing about in your book. By the time your book is finished and ready for publication, having an attentive podcast audience you can promote to will give you an invaluable kick-off point.

This has been an eye-opener for me. Coming soon (tomorrow - *Monday* - in fact!) ... this article I'm currently writing may well change the way you think about - or at least approach - owned media. 

Indeed, it may completely alter the way that you - as a business owner, or PR/marketing pro working for a growing brand - view this whole content marketing thing (and therefore kick off your 'owned media' publishing efforts as a result). 

I'm only being serious. 

But seriously :) 

When I heard this idea described to me by Andrés López-Varela in a recent podcast chat, it was very much an 'a-ha' moment. THINK: A slap in the face with a dead fish! 🐟 

I've been deep in the content trenches since 2007 and thought I'd heard pretty much everything, but I did a double-take at this idea - it was so breathtakingly simple conceptually, yet quite powerful (and obvious) once it's been explained.

Do yourself a favour and check out Chris Do, founder of The Futur™. His star is seriously rising, thanks in part to the educational and inspiring content he and his team are relentlessly producing (I say this in a good way!).

But more than that, it's Chris's humility and down-to-earth nature that is winning him fans globally. Put another way, Chris is NOT a bro' marketer (which makes him a lot more palatable to watch/listen to) - check him out!

I watched this video last night (link below). While Chris's riff is more expansive than just personal branding, he captures the tensions/differences between performance marketing and brand building perfectly, without resorting to academic jargon. 

Brand vs demand is a concept all business owners NEED to fully understand and appreciate. Or, how I like to couch it: Credibility vs conversion. If you run a business, seriously, you need to watch this video :)

Building one's brand and reputation (visibility, influence, trust, credibility etc) is where PR comes to the fore. Of course, it needs to be done well - with passion, purpose and strategic intent; as well, it needs to be all-encompassing, and incorporate content and digital communications (i.e. not just 'earned' media) - in order to be super-effective.

Chris is a master at PR. Pretty much everything he does fulls under this banner, and he's doing it better than most #HighlyRecommended

Today's marketplace is a sea of sameness, awash with copycats and 'wannabes' all screaming to be heard. This in turn provides entrepreneurs with a huge challenge: How can we stand out from all the online noise?  

You can start by being smart and authentic in how you differentiate your business or personal brand from the competition. 

While there is no one-size-fits-all solution to this, one powerful thing you can do is articulate and communicate a core belief or philosophy that's particular to you and your business.

What do you believe in? 

Have some conviction ~ nail your colours to the mast, as I like to say, and put it out there so you can start genuinely attracting the *right* people to your brand and your business: customers, clients, employees, partners, media and influencers etc.

Why do governments (and government bodies ... and corporations) still send poorly-written, jargon-filled communiqués to constituents and customers?  I don't understand ... 

This, just to hand:

"Amendment C263 proposes to implement a municipal wide strategic housing framework by incorporating a Residential Development Framework Plan (RDFP) and the strategic directions of Hume’s Housing Diversity Strategy (Hume City Council, 2023), Preferred Future Neighbourhood Character Statements  (Hansen Partnership, 2023) and Affordable Housing Policy (Hume City Council, 2021) into the Hume Planning Scheme."

Puuh-lease 🙁 

Seriously, why bother sending anything at all?

We are many years entrenched in a social media age, where brevity in communications is king, and authenticity is queen. 

Spouting jargonistic nonsense in your emails (or via your website or videos, or any medium you choose to use) is not only disrespectful to the recipient, but also engenders distrust. We can only wonder if the communiqué is meant to disorient and confuse rather than inform and/or educate.

Hardly a day goes by when many of us aren't alerted to the latest and greatest AI tool. In my world, many of these 'innovations' are often dressed up as a hack to get people to create more content without putting in the real work. Ugh! 

Slowly but surely, however, we're seeing advances in AI (again, I'm talking about the world of PR, content and digital communications) that help us improve what it is we are doing in a smooth and efficient way, versus just churning out more stuff for us. 

For example, my current fave AI tool is Resound, which seamlessly helps me edit my podcast ('Become Your Own PR Machine') and improve the overall quality of the audio ✅ 

And then there is Brendon AI - a new AI addition to speaker/coach Brendon Burchard's GrowthDay membership portal which takes all of Brendon's training content ("The entire vault of my 20-year career") and packages it up as bite-sized tips and answers to members' questions - audio, and text. In other words, you can either ask the app a question and get a spoken answer from 'Brendon', or type (or text) a question and receive a detailed written answer.

A really savvy use of AI to add value to a product (GrowthDay) and improve the overall experience for customers 👊

Brendon AI GrowthDay Mastery Membership

Ran this poll on LinkedIn the other day. Granted, not super-robust from a survey perspective, but it does reveal a mini-insight that perhaps Facebook is not the go-to organic social media 'mothership' that it once was.

This certainly backs up what I hear anecdotally around the PR and marketing traps. What about you? Do you take FB as seriously as you once did? Drop a comment below, I'd love to hear from you!

Now, undoubtedly Facebook still works in an organic sense for some business and personal brands (I'd be interested to know how much time they put into it). But I think it's safe to say Facebook is not the social darling it once was.

Only got themselves to blame, of course. The brand has shot itself in the foot on more than one occasion, and its corporate reputation is stuffed.

But if you can look past the negatives, maybe there's a green shoot of opportunity there?

If businesses are getting off the platform, then maybe it's worth considering jumping back on (and taking it seriously again) if you're a business and, of course, if your audience is still active on it? hashtag
