Hi, I'm Troy 👋

With 8+ years experience as a marketing expert I've helped launch, grow and scale businesses for various professionals.

I've personally managed millions of dollars in ad spend for marketing campaigns, and raised $4.5M for a real estate syndicate. On top of that we helped raise $619k for charity, and helped free 2750 women and children and facilitated extraction from a conflict zone.

Currently, I advise on various projects for clients.

I faced a handful of challenges in April and a handful of awesome wins too. 

As I reflect back it was a very growth worthy month. 

(This is growth, you’re growth-ing!)

Here’s what happened personally, and professionally.

Professionally:

- We landed a HUGE contract with a mega-corp. I’m under NDA so I can’t say their name, but their annual revenue is extremely impressive. (in the $B’s)

- I’ve been on LinkedIn now for 6+ months, which is pretty cool. I’ve met some AMAZING friends and connections I’m happy to have in my world. I crossed the 5k follower mark.

- I’m launching a Consulting Community, where I help folks bring in 1-3 new clients. I’m testing to see if there’s interest in this and so far quite a few folks have reached out about it. I’m thinking that in 2 weeks I’ll be closing the doors.

- The Internal Success newsletter is growing, and we published 4x editions, which means 4x sharpie drawings! :D There’s days where I think no one reads it, but when I look at the data, we’re hitting a 70% open rate on average.

- Oh, I hired a consultant to help wire in some of my offerings. 

Personally:

- I’ve taken up freediving. A few weeks ago I did training to prepare for a level 1 certification. Gave me a more detailed understanding of the do’s and don’ts of holding your breath underwater. My record is 40 seconds underwater, and 15 meters deep.

- I’ve been hitting the gym 3x a week, and I’m getting pretty jacked. I had someone a few weeks ago at networking event ask me if I’m a fitness model for work *blushes*...it’s working haha.

Pitfalls, where I’ve fallen short:

- I’m always walking a tightrope of “omg I suck” and “omg this is great” and my goal is to bring that to more of a neutral place where I’m not second guessing everything. Re-launching my career on social is hard and takes SO MUCH WORK.

- I need to take a bit more downtime, I’m pretty sore, and tired. I feel like I’m on the verge of some breakthroughs. To combat this I'm doing my best to get out into nature more. A massage and a sauna would be great. Self care needs work.

All in all progress is important, it feels like I'm "on purpose" and I'm moving in a good direction. I’m excited for what's in store for May!

Many consultants struggle with self-worth issues, and are often unable to see the value they bring to the table, until someone from the outside says “You’re good at THIS”...

My 3 biggest tips for aspiring consultants:

PRICING IS EVERYTHING

1. Know your numbers, and get solid in your pricing. Let’s say you have a “freedom number” which means how much do you need to replace your income. Build your pricing around that. When I first started my consulting, my 1:1 work was $750/mo for 4x calls a month. 

I knew if I got 7x clients, that would bring me in $5250/month.

Long term, that pricing wasn’t sustainable, short term it got me in the game. 

You’ve gotta start somewhere and having an understanding of your baseline gives you a sense of certainty. What is your minimum?

Once I was at max capacity (time & energy), I’d raise my rates by $250-300 per new client. Time is the only resource you can’t get back, the more time a project takes will dictate your pricing.

A LOGO AND A WEBSITE DOESN’T MATTER

2. Not right away at least. You can have an ugly g-doc, with headlines that are bold, and body text that explains the offer. Brand matters LONG term, but not short term. Don’t waste hundreds of hours trying to get it perfect. 

Understand that with the clarity you gain by being IN THE GAME you will likely change names, color schemes, and various other items that are meant to stay fluid at the start.

Your Last Name + Consulting is enough to start.
Your First Name + Consulting is enough to start.

Making something aesthetically pleasing increases your overall value, but what matters most is putting out offers, submitting pricing and having needle moving conversations.

Not dismissing brand here, just when you first get started.

BE CAREFUL WORKING WITH NEW COMPANIES & STARTUPS

3. It might seem easy to work with a newer business, because you’re new too. Match made in heaven! Incorrect. Why do I give caution to this? 

New business models aren’t proven and you don’t want your first chances of success wrapped into something that might not work regardless of how hard you work.

Putting yourself in a likely position to succeed, matters.

New companies will offer you “equity” to help, and 20% of nothing, is still nothing.

You want to pour gas on a bonfire, and watch the flames raise up. You don’t want to bang rocks together to try and create sparks hoping for a fire.

One will propel you quickly, one will burn you out rapidly.

Your energy matters, and it’s why you’re getting into consulting so you can leverage your expertise, get paid, and get back time.

Choose great people, over companies that have “potential” … unfortunately, potential doesn't always pay the bills.

It’s been 6 months of building Internal Success and sharing on LinkedIn for consultants and aspiring consultants-to-be. Content is hard. Don't let the 7-figure gurus fool you.

I wanted to add 3000 followers in 6 months but instead I added 575 of the right followers using these 4 tips, and it has led to new clients and conversations.

Remember, Conversations = Contracts

Build A Backlog:

- Build a backlog of content ideas, there’s nothing worse than staring at a blank page not knowing what to do. When you see a good idea or it comes to you, write it down even if it’s a sentence to frame the idea.

Know your pricing:

- If you don’t know what you’re selling, it’s almost impossible to create a narrative or a content plan. If you have clarity around what you’re building, the content plan starts to build itself. Day by day, new ideas will flood in that you can write about.

First Line Inspo:

- Looking at content that I like that is highly engaging and engaged upon by others. Instead of copying what they say, I use the first line, and re-write my own perspective and something great usually comes out.

Accountability Group:

- Having a group of peers that are also publishing content, it adds a bit of pressure to wanting to show up because I’ve got other people to show up for. Maybe it’s a layer of competition, or public accountability…but it works tremendously.

I used to work in an industry I didn't like. 
8 years ago I quit and started my own thing.

The start was bumpy. 
I had no leads, no likes, and no one knew me.

Now, I get pretty good engagement, and I have new leads rolling in. It wasn't always like this, and it took a TON of work. (Sooooooooooooooooooooo much more to go.)

Anyone that says it's easy, is lying.

Here's 8 things I did religiously:

1. Built relationships and introduced people without expecting immediate results.
2. Collected testimonials and made case studies.
3. Built out dream packages and pricing I dreamed of.
4. Stayed consistent on social, creating content often.
5. Documented my journey, and posted about it.
6. Attended events, and genuinely be helpful.
7. Invested in my skills, and myself.
8. Worked on my positioning.

Studying positioning and psychology has been the highest ROI thing I’ve done

The biggest question I often get from clients is...

How do I position myself to attract higher value leads and prospects?

Before I knew what positioning was, I stumbled upon it accidentally in my construction career.

I did a ton of estimates and pricing. I was competing with folks that would undercut my work just to get the job. I was sick and tired of it.

I came up with a few unique ways to differentiate.

- The way we dressed
- The way we educated
- The way we demonstrated

They’d show up in dirty clothes and a floppy notepad, we would show up with a nice black jacket, clean pants and a crisp leather black book.

Most folks would come in and ask “Where’s the blueprints?” and they’d price based on that, spend 5 mins, and leave. Not really looking at the project.

We would come in, shoot laser measuring tools around, take notes, addressing potential problem areas. We would still price off of the blueprints, but we put on an epic demonstration with our laser machines to show we knew what we were doing.

Other folks wouldn’t take the time to address problem areas, they’d leave that to the homeowner. We would educate the homeowner on things they needed to prepare before we came to the job site, and how it would give them a better finished product.

We’d always win bigger bids, knowing our pricing was higher.

I’d ask why and they’d often respond 

“You took the time to get to know us, and I know you’ll do great work.”

To sum it all up? Positioning comes from presentation, demonstration and education.

I'm glad I eventually transitioned out of construction, but it gave me a TON of lifelong lessons I'll always remember.

You don’t need to understand EVERYTHING, you just need to be good at what you do. Clients are looking for results, and if you can guide them, instruct them or show them the way you’d do things and it’s innovative and different they’ll give you a chance.

Remember, you’re selling an outcome, and not solely your expertise.

You display expertise, and sell the outcome.

It's the 5th month of 2024 already! Unlikely I hit ALL of these, but it's better to hit and miss, then not hit at all.

Here’s some of the goals I’ve set out for May - let’s see how it goes. Feeling ambitious, but also knowingly need to work on some self care.

Professional Goals:

- Gauge interest in a “Steal My Proposal Template” workshop, where I show folks how to structure BIG proposals, to land dream clients. I think this will be a winner. Open to being wrong though.

- I’m going to launch “The Consulting Community” where I help new consultants get 1-3 clients. I have the outline on what we’ll do…Pricing, Packaging, Positioning & Sales, but I want folks that are inside to influence some of the materials too based on needs.

- Get ahead of my Internal Success emails that go out on Thursdays, so I can pre-tease them. I feel I’m falling short here and a little bit of FOMO goes a long way. 

- Shoot a handful of videos for LinkedIn, tell my story more. Go deep with connections, instead of wide. Test this out, either I like it or I don’t and based on performance, keep it or ditch it.

- Work on a better content cadence, in regards to…audience building, problem/solution, and trust building content.

- Land a handful more agency clients and keep this rolling in the background while I keep building my personal brand and community.

Personal Goals:

- Sign up to a new gym in my area, I’ve been going 3x a week for 1.5 years and this new gym opened closer to my house and I might be able to increase that to 4x a week due to the proximity.

- Eat healthier, I’ve been eating well but I think I can crank it up in regards to quality of meats, more veggies, less cheese…lol (McaullyBulkin’)

- Do a TON of free diving, a friend is coming to town for a week and I want to go see some wild caves and various underwater creatures along the way.

- Get a massage, and acupuncture. I’ve been failing in the “self care” category, in regards to body care. I’ve been using my body, but pushing it a bit too far some days.

- Do the bloodwork to see if I’m deficient in any areas in regards to supplementation or needing to adjust my diet. I’ve been putting this one off since Q1, and need to do it.

- Get to bed earlier, I need to sleep closer to 11pm or heck, even 10pm. Right now it’s midnight. I’ve desired to get up earlier, but I’m not willing to sacrifice my 8 hours of sleep.

If you have any digital skill that can be delivered online or in person, you can likely run a consulting practice.

The truth is, most people that tout “solo-preneurship” will tell you to run a course, but the challenge is most folks don’t have massive followings or distribution networks to make that a profitable play.

Getting 2-3 clients in as a consultant, can give you a healthy 6-figure income.

A few weeks back, I gave a new consultant a proposal template. It outlined all of the steps you need to close a deal in detail.

- Intro
- Objectives
- Value to Client
- Testimonials
- Packages
- Pricing
- Terms

She took that template, and closed 6-figures worth of consulting contracts. 
($102K to be precise.)

It’s not rocket science, it just takes some guts. Sending out pricing is scary, because you face rejection. Not all pricing is accepted, not all projects are won. 

Those that take chances though? That can pay off huge.

Take a chance, bet on yourself.

It was 10:10pm on a Tuesday night, and he was doing the most exciting thing in the world.....

I unfollowed a few recruiters and others on here recently who would literally ONLY post about their wins, how great they are, etc... 

This was the headline of a post I read from Savannah Hill

They’re just putting up highlight reels, and in a world where we all take L’s (sometimes daily) and rarely share them, I think I’d rather be a solution than the cause.

Let’s share some things that haven’t worked out this last month.

Losses This Last Month:

- I have about 24,000 in expenses coming up, and it’s going to take a bite out of my savings. Taxes, accounting, training program. Bleh.

- We priced a project, came in at 15,000/mo or 180k/yr and lost it. Got clear on the budget, prepared a fairly extensive proposal. It’s pretty normal to not close every deal you propose, but this one felt like it was in the bag, and frankly…it wasn’t.

- I set a goal of putting a free monthly training together in March for consultants, experts and creators, and although I have about 7 days left in the month I'll likely postpone until April.

- I haven’t slept well the past few weeks and we moved our bed into the living room, our AC in our master bedroom broke down and we’re waiting for a swamped technician to come repair it during high season.

Wins I’ve Experienced:

On the backside of taking numerous L’s, I’m starting to see the clouds part and get a little sunshine creeping through.

- We won a consulting gig, and we were wired $10k on Friday, so that’s nice. Funny enough it was a pretty fast moving project. I really like this client.

- I have another consulting client that has been working with me for 3 months now. He’s really pleased, pays on time and promptly and said our last week's session was one of the best he's had yet.

- My email list is growing, although some days it feels like a slog. I’m getting 1 or 2 subscribers every other day. Nothing huge, but I’m starting to see it pickup.

- My engagement on LinkedIN is also growing quite a bit, if I look at the data on the charts the spikes and valleys on the impressions and reach are getting larger. (showing up for 4 months straight helps) I’m experimenting with various content styles.

Moral of the story? Nothing is ever a back to back highlight reel, and in order to build deeper relationships with your folks, be a bit more human.

Once you take something to market, it is tangible and it is real.

Is poor pricing costing you freedom? Let's fix it.

With the digital world booming with opportunities, living digitally can be challenging. 

There's quite a few things to consider.

We were in Europe at the time. We enjoyed it, but it was getting colder and winter was settling in. I left those blistering Canadian winters for a reason.

I desperately wanted a community, and a better timezone to work from.

The thing about being abroad and traveling a lot, is it can be quite lonely. Fleeting friendships, people coming and going. 

We wanted a place that had a community of entrepreneurs that were living long term. People that had similar mindsets, and thought like us.

Playa Del Carmen seemed like a beacon of hope for that.

When you’re traveling, these are things you don’t really consider that make it a great experience.

- Clean air, without smog
- Safety and good medical (Playa feels considerably safe)
- Fast wifi, and decent infrastructure
- Good grocery, quality food available
- Expat community, entrepreneurs that base there

All of these are really important, and I easily overlooked them at the start, but now it’s something I keep in mind long term.

What are some “non-negotiables” for you when traveling?

I believe you should shamelessly support everything single thing your friends work on.

That's literally it. Building something is hard, and having the people closest to you doubt you is even harder.

As long as you're choosing the right friends, it's something the world needs more of.

Agree?

We were trapped and it would have been 2-3 hours of walking through a mosquito infested jungle. A freediving adventure.

He dropped his car keys in a 120ft (35M) Cenote. 

We found this unbelievable Cenote, very pretty. Very deep.

We flagged someone down on a gravel trail after wandering around for hours.

We asked about this cenote we found on a map, and if he could take us there.

He responded in Spanish “Sure, if you pay my gas.”

No problem, easy.

We ride down a windy and bumpy trail, and we arrive in PARADISE.

There were pineapple plants, blooming cactuses, papaya trees. Unbelievable. 

We’re SO excited to jump in, we pop on our masks, fins and wetsuits.

We adventure around for a few hours, bright green lily pads, fallen trees underwater, stalactites from the ceilings of caves. Tree roots dangling. Birds chirping. THIS PLACE IS NICE!

So, we’re ready to leave…change our clothes, we’re HUNGRY at this point. Stomachs growling. We’re joking about eating everything in sight and have a plan to go to the closest town and feast.

We get to the car, and my friend's jaw drops.

“I CAN’T FIND MY KEYS! I THINK I LOST THEM IN THE WATER. THEY WERE IN MY SHORTS. I WAS EXCITED AND FORGOT. OH NO!”

No cell service. It’s a FAR walk. Remember, we’re in the middle of freakin’ nowhere.

We ask the caretaker of the property if they can call us for a ride to the highway, at least from the highway we could flag down a ride back.

A big “WTF” moment.

They respond  “40mins, the boss will come and pick you up”...

We’re sauntering around, my partner says “Go look for the keys, I bet you’ll find them.”

This thing is HUGE, and DEEP. The chances of finding the keys are slim to none.

When we first went in, we had a rock wall we were diving down.

It would make logical sense the keys were in there somewhere.

We dive down 3 times, scope the area out. Like looking for a needle in a haystack.

3rd dive down, we remembered there was this silt shelf about 50ft (15M) down.

If they did fall, they would have landed there.

We dive down. 

NO WAY! We found them. What the heck.

We rush back to the car, to see if they even work. They’ve been sitting at the bottom of the drink for 2+ hrs under enormous pressure. For every 10 meters you go underwater, you have one entire atmosphere of pressure. This was 1.5 atmospheres. Lol

Lights flash on the car. “They WORK! WOO!”

We’re all celebrating, jumping with joy…

The boss of the cenote arrives, we tell him our tale of the lost keys. 

We all laugh.

He asks us if we want a key to the gate.

We look at eachother stunned…”Sure?!”

We now have access to a private cenote, we’re allowed to camp and have get-togethers on the property if we’d like.

Interesting past weekend.

I’m excited to invite more friends to our very own private cenote.

Moral of the story? 

Even when it feels like you’ve been truly defeated, try and try again. 

You'll find glory, it will be better than you ever expected.


Seeing many folks that we're looking for work for months, even years land new jobs and dream positions lately.

That's heartwarming. 

More of that please.

Algorithms change, people don’t.

John Kraski shared an insight, and it made me reflect.

Paraphrasing, but here’s the essence of what he said.

“Everyones telling you to comment on BIG accounts to grow on LinkedIn, but it’s the small creators that matter.” 

“They will support you, they will care about you. They will engage on your posts.”

Instead of trying to “hack the system” - build friendships.

That?...
