Forgelight Creative was a branding and digital marketing agency that I helped found and manage. We were well known in Lincoln for working on community projects and helping new startup companies, though we also served clients in the restaurant and retail industries. As is common with many business owners, I wore many hats. My responsibilities included recruiting, hiring, and managing our team; creating and supervising the execution of branding and online marketing strategies; sales; client communication; content writing; and administrative functions.

In the three years we were open, I learned more than I could've imagined about running a business, marketing strategies and where that industry is headed, and managing a team.

I had the opportunity to work with Union Pacific's intermodal marketing and business development team on several marketing projects during the summer of 2013 through a paid internship. The projects involved research, analysis, strategy development, copywriting, and execution recommendations. By the end of the summer, I produced new website layouts and copy for the intermodal team as well as collateral now used for sales and training.

I served as an account executive at Jacht, the University of Nebraska - Lincoln's student advertising agency. I managed a team creating strategic, creative solutions for our client's communication objectives. This included coordinating client communications as well as managing contractual agreements and invoices. I also researched and developed a long-term plan for the agency to effectively find, acquire, and retain new clients.

I worked with small technology companies in Arizona, Nevada, and Southern California regarding editorial and advertising coverage in five publications from Sandhills Publishing. I handled the entire sales and account management process from finding leads to designing ads to collecting on accounts receivable. Though my account-base varied due to numerous department-wide restructuring efforts, my book of business peaked at $20,000 in monthly revenues. I also had the opportunity to shadow and learn from my territory partner, who worked with large technology corporations. The five publications I worked with are Computer Power User (CPU), Smart Computing, PC Today, Processor, and First Glimpse.

When HubSpot announced Projects at INBOUND, I was...underwhelmed.

But a few "in development" items in recent product updates make it clear that HubSpot Projects is much more than just a new object name.

In addition to the Gantt chart view they launched Projects with, they're also working on:

- Project templates
- Subtasks
- Task dependencies
- A new task card

We're still a long way from dedicated project management tools like ClickUp or Asana, but we're getting much closer to a pretty decent solution for lightweight project management - all included in the HubSpot license you already have.

Unleashing HubSpot | CEO of Simple Strat & Host of HubSpot Hacks

Stepping in as CEO Simple Strat, one of my main objectives was for us to become the best company we know at leveraging HubSpot.

While we help a lot of clients maximize their HubSpot, ours often got neglected. But that's changing, and today was a big first step.

This morning our team held their first marketing & sales meeting that was based 100% around a HubSpot dashboard. It's something we put in place for clients again and again, but never prioritized for ourselves. Today, I saw first hand how powerful these can really be.

- Marketing and sales see visually how we're performing on number of deals created to goal.

- Sales leads a quick rundown of deals created and comments on ICP fit and sources. 

-  Sales recaps closed won deals, highlighting what messages and solutions resonate.

- Sales recaps closed lost deals, highlighting objections and where we have opportunity to better compete.

- Everyone sees visually how we're doing for pipeline, velocity, win rates, revenue targets, and forecasts.

All this fosters conversations that are aligned and based on real data, spurring action designed to move the needle with accountability to metrics baked in. 

We're only one day in, but things already feel different.

Okay, I see you Google Gemini 👀

I was in a team meeting today trying to remember a piece of software someone recommended to me years ago.

One sentence prompt in Gemini from Gmail: "What screen recording software did Dylan Sellberg suggest we use for the ChatSpot demo videos?"

Nearly instant, simple answer pulled from a years-old email out of 60k+: Screen Studio 

(that said, the AI column fill in Google sheets is garbage at the moment)

After 200+ updates at INBOUND, HubSpot surely hasn't released any more since then, right? ...RIGHT?! ...

Actually, since my INBOUND updates recap webinar on September 10th, HubSpot has already dropped 84 new updates.

But don't worry, today at noon Central, I'll be highlighting the most important ones. And, as always, I'll also be covering plenty of use cases for the new features so you can get value from them right away.

- Bottom 10 YouTube videos by dislike reactions
- Shares over time
