System design isn’t about memorizing tools.

 It’s about understanding trade-offs, failure modes, and scale.

 Here are the core concepts that show up in almost every real-world system.

1 CAP Theorem
In a distributed system, you can fully guarantee only two of Consistency, Availability, and Partition Tolerance.
 Used to reason about database and service behavior during network failures.

2 PACELC Theorem
Extends CAP by explaining trade-offs even when the system is healthy.
 If there’s a partition → Availability vs Consistency; else → Latency vs Consistency.

3 Consistency Models
Defines how up-to-date data is when read (strong, eventual, read-your-writes, monotonic).
 Used heavily in distributed databases, caches, and geo-replicated systems.

4 ACID
Guarantees correctness of transactions: atomic, consistent, isolated, durable.
 Used in relational databases for payments, orders, and financial systems.

5 BASE
Favors availability and scalability over immediate consistency.
 Common in large-scale systems like social feeds, analytics, and caching layers.

6 Idempotency
An operation can be safely retried without changing the final result.
 Critical for APIs, message queues, retries, and payment systems.

7 Retries & Timeouts

A mathematical relationship between throughput, latency, and concurrency.

10 CQRS (Command Query Responsibility Segregation)

🚦 Load Balancing Algorithms: How Traffic Is Optimized in Distributed Systems

When we say “we use a load balancer”, what we really mean is:
An algorithm decides where each request goes.

That decision directly impacts latency, stability, and scalability.

Here are the most important load-balancing algorithms every system designer should understand:

🔁 Round Robin
 Requests are distributed sequentially across servers.
 Works well when servers are identical and requests have similar cost. Simple, but breaks under uneven workloads.

⚖️ Weighted Round Robin
 Servers receive traffic based on assigned weights.
 Useful when servers have different capacities or during gradual traffic migrations.

🔌 Least Connections
 Each request goes to the server with the fewest active connections.
 Ideal for long-running or unpredictable requests where load varies over time.

🧮 Weighted Least Connections
 Combines server capacity with current load.
 One of the most practical algorithms for real production systems.

🔐 Hash-Based Routing
 Traffic is routed using a hash of client IP, user ID, or headers.
 Ensures the same client consistently hits the same backend — useful for session affinity and cache locality.

🍪 Sticky Sessions (Session Affinity)
 Once a user is assigned to a server, they stay there.
 Easy to implement, but limits scalability and can create uneven load.

🎲 Random Selection
 A backend is chosen randomly.
 Surprisingly effective at large scale with stateless services and large server pools.

🧠 Adaptive / Dynamic Algorithms
 Routing decisions are based on live metrics like latency, error rate, or CPU usage.
 Traffic naturally flows toward the healthiest servers.

🔐 Security in System Design: It’s Not a Feature - It’s an Architecture
Security shouldn’t be added at the end.

Well-designed systems use defense in depth, where security is applied in layers, each layer solving a different problem.

Here’s a concise way to think about security when designing systems

1 Authentication - Who are you?
This layer verifies identity using OAuth, SSO, MFA, or tokens. Tokens should be short-lived and securely stored. For service-to-service communication, API keys or mutual TLS are commonly used.

2 Authorization - What can you do?
Authorization controls access to resources using RBAC, ABAC, or policies. It must be enforced on every request, including internal service calls, to prevent privilege escalation.

3 Network Security - Who can reach what?
Network controls define which components can communicate. Use VPCs, firewalls, private endpoints, and the principle of private by default. Databases and internal services should never be publicly exposed.

4 API & Edge Security - Protect the entry point
An API Gateway or edge layer protects the system from abuse using rate limiting, throttling, WAF rules, and DDoS protection before traffic reaches the application.

5 Application Security - Protect business logic
This includes server-side input validation, protection against common attacks (SQL injection, XSS, CSRF), secure error handling, and safe dependency usage. Never trust user or service input.

6 Data Security - Protect the crown jewels
Sensitive data must be encrypted in transit and at rest. Passwords should be hashed and salted, sensitive fields masked, and access restricted at the row or column level where needed.

7 Monitoring & Logging - Detect and respond
Security requires visibility. Log authentication attempts, permission failures, and admin actions. Centralized logs and alerts help detect incidents early 
and respond quickly.

8 Infrastructure Security - Harden the platform
This layer focuses on IAM with least privilege, secure CI/CD pipelines, secret management, patching, and infrastructure as code. Production access should be minimal and auditable.
